Indigo Girls – World Falls Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about finding yourself (metaphorically) in a huge and scary world

Indigo Girls – Lay My Head Down Lyrics 16 years ago
It's been a few years since I've gotten really excited about a new indigo girls song, but I'd put this one amongst my favorites without a doubt. It doesn't need an explanation, just enjoy.

Indigo Girls – Galileo Lyrics 16 years ago
Not to take anything away from the song, but they forgot to mention that Galileo also went blind staring at the sun through a telescope. I guess nobody's the king of insight.

Indigo Girls – Joking Lyrics 16 years ago
This is about two people who had a deep and meaningful conversation about life or philosophy. Since it can be scary and uncomfortable to think about big things beyond your control, so later after the conversation was over one person closed their mind to the conversation and tried to forget about it. When the other person tried to bring it up again, the first one tried to pass it off like nothing happened - "Oh, I was only joking" - rather than admitting that they took these big issues seriously. The line that seems to sum it up to me is 'Sentiment given and sentiment lost, you shake it off'

Indigo Girls – The Philosophy Of Loss Lyrics 16 years ago
Oh, and some of the words in the first verse are wrong, and even though it's subtle, it still changed the meaning of the song. The real lyrics are:

"Welcome to why this church has died
in the heart of the exiled from the kingdom of hate'

Indigo Girls – Three Hits Lyrics 16 years ago
I've read a poem by Frank Standford called 'The Battlefield where the Moon Says I Love You'. It's a fifteen thousand line behemoth with no breaks and no punctuation, and it's probably the darkest stuff I've ever read. The exerpt on the back of the tome reads:

im not going anywhere
ill just bleed so the stars have something dark
to shine in

The poem, along with Stanford's other work, is riddled with allusions to death and loss; I would suggest anyone to read any of his writings if you can find it

Indigo Girls – History of Us Lyrics 16 years ago
The meaning isn't too compicated; this is about needing to forget the memory of a past love and the impossibility of such a futile attempt. I have to agree with discman about the lyrics, but I think the Indigo girls' poetry has only gotten better. If you like this, I suggest listening to: The Language or the Kiss, Love will come to You, Fugitive, Ghost, Philosophy of loss... the list goes on and I would say many songs match or exceed the power of this one

Bob Dylan – Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues Lyrics 17 years ago
I took these lyrics from the album 'Walk like a duck, smell like a skunk'. Like so many of his songs, this one must have changed each time he sang it

Indigo Girls – Touch Me Fall Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know about losing your virginity to this song, but it seems like the right song to commit suicide to. I don't think it is about sex.

Dictionary-
This song isn't rock piano, it's jazz piano. Cool piano, I agree, but pretty typical.

Indigo Girls – Hammer and a Nail Lyrics 17 years ago
Life gets you down if all you do is philosophize, you gotta live out your philosophy. My favorite Indigo Girls line could be 'The dark abyss of an emptiness standing at the edge of a drowning blue'

Indigo Girls – Land of Canaan Lyrics 17 years ago
Moses was not allowed into the Promised Land for sins he commited before the end of the exodus. The subject puts the lyricist on an unachevable pedastal, undeserving. The writer doesn't want to be viewed from afar, doesn't want to be the land of Canaan

Indigo Girls – Love Will Come to You Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think this song was supposed to be comforting, rather it seems bitingly sarcastic and on the whole depressing. The alleged comforter is only telling the listener what she wants to hear - but the speaker doesn't believe a word of it! There is so much evidence to prove the song is cynical: "Guess I wasn't the best one to ask" - She says right off the bat that she can't give the answer the girl is asking for. "The one I never can afford" - She hasn't had love herself. "Hoping just because I spoke the words that they're true" - Clearly she doesn't believe what she says; if all she can do is hope they are true. The whole last verse is the only consolation she can offer - nothing about the future being better, only a sardonic message about living with pain. Very poetic, but without respite.

Indigo Girls – Fugitive Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah I was wrong about it being Emily Sailiers. I should have known also because when Amy sings the lead it is usually her song.

I civilly disagree with Abarine; I don't think the subject of the song (the fugitive, the 'you' she sings to) is another person. The first line makes it clear that the whole song is an internal struggle. This makes the threat of being exposed more universal and truly frightening.

Indigo Girls – Language Or the Kiss Lyrics 17 years ago
I think Emily is lamenting about her life as an existentialist. The first verse is about the life she could be living, something of an orthodox life where right and wrong were set in stone and there wasn't a need to wonder. This is a life laid out to her by her father, a minister and in my mind the second person (the 'you') in the song. But she cannot live like he wants her to, so she leaves the comfort of certainty into a life of introspection.

The second verse starts with a warning from what she is leaving behind, but she admits she cannot avoid her thoughts and her questions even if she wants to, she must 'read the greek...'. The third verse cinches the song, where she confides how afraid she is that she won't succeed and her life will be fruitless. That's what makes the last few lines so meaningful, she knows she is risking everything and might have made a stupid decision to leave the happy little family at the table. 'To have the things that mean the most...' she wishes she could somehow hedge her bets, or find some sort of safety net because she knows what she has to lose. Unforgiving ... my favorite word of the song (just listen to how she says it) so perfectly describes how final her decision is and drives home how much of a risk she is taking by being who she must.

What can I say ... I'm glad she made the decision she did because she never would have written all her wonderful music as a mindless drone. I don't see anywhere in the song about her homosexuality but I none the less like what Colum1225 had to say. I'm pretty sure it isn't a love song, but I could be way off. Either way, its one of Emily Sailiers' best.

Five Iron Frenzy – Wizard Needs Food, Badly Lyrics 17 years ago
More serious than it first sounds. It reminds me of a John Eldredge book. It is about how women domesticate men. Its not really about toys, rather about masculinity

Indigo Girls – You and Me of the 10,000 Wars Lyrics 17 years ago
A sarcastic accusation of war supporters. Clearly not the actual beliefs of the Indigo Girls, it is supposed to be both funny and serious. Unfortunately, there are actually people who hold these beliefs. My favorite line is 'try making one and one make one'

Indigo Girls – The Wood Song Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about accepting the hardships of life and the turmoils of the soul, because without them life would be pointless. It's about trying to organize and plan you're life, but in the end any plan goes wrong leaving you unsure where your life is headed. The end lesson is to simply except life as it is. I love how this song is right after Touch Me Fall, it is a perfect answer to the questions the first song asks.

Music Lover is right about the Hamlet reference. Ophelia was driven mad because after professing his love for her Hamlet became distant to protect himself, causing the great heartache of indifference. Notice the many refenrences to water in this song; Ophelia drown herself in a river.

Dream Theater – Overture 1928 Lyrics 18 years ago
Has everybody found a peice of each song on the album in the song? The most obscure snipet I've found is at 5:57 of Fatal Tragedy and 2:28 of the song; it's only nine notes but it is in the same key and both times it is bridging two different riffs so it can't be a coincidence.

Dream Theater – Finally Free Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm pretty sure nicholas' past identity was in fact Julian (the sleeper), not Victoria you can tell by two reasons: first, Julian and Nicholas have the same voice, but Victoria is always sung in octaves. When the sleeper says "I familiar voice comes shining through" and then Nicholas is singing the main theme, you can particularily tell they had the same voice. Second, in another part of the album, Nicholas and Victoria sing 'One last time' again together... it makes a lot more sense if it is Victoria and Julian singing together than if it is victoria singing with herself.

Bob Dylan – Seven Curses Lyrics 18 years ago
A little-known Dylan song from when he had more of a Guthrie-type feel. I think its excellent, it really says something about Dylan when he has hundreds of songs that everybody loves, but hundreds of other songs that nobody even nows, and probably still hundreds more that nobody even remembers.

Bob Dylan – License to Kill Lyrics 18 years ago
The last verse is pretty sgnificant, it is a reference to Narcississ of legend. Coincidentally (or probably not) Narcississ' love was named Echo, also the name of the love of Dylan's youth.

Bob Dylan – The Death of Emmett Till Lyrics 18 years ago
A true story about a fourteen-year-old boy who was killed for saying "Thanks, hon" to a female clerk as he left a convieniance store in Mississippi in 1955. A photograph of his dead face was placed in many northern newspapers, even though he had been shot in the head and one of his eyes were gauged out. Two men were acquited, even though they later admitted they were guilty, becuase the body was too mangled to properly identify. It was an important event because it generated a lot of sympathy from northern people for the plight of blacks in the south. Even though The Hurricane gets more press time, I think I like this Dylan song more.

Indigo Girls – Fugitive Lyrics 18 years ago
A very deep song, but I'll take a stab at it. I'm pretty sure this song, like many of Emily Sailiers', is secretly a religious song. It is about a tremendous internal battle between her two halves, one sinful and the other pious. The whole song is about trying to purge the former from her soul. The climax is incredible, and in the end she caves in and feeds her demons again. A notable, if confusing, verse is the third (I stood without clothes...) where she thinks she has a religious experience, and tries with all her might to hang on to that moment for as long as she can. This is an awesome song, I wish I could write like Emily Sailiers can.

Indigo Girls – The Philosophy Of Loss Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow. This is Emily Sailiers' deepest and most poetic song, and that's really saying something. This song is an attack on organized religion and on society as a whole. "We kill just a little to save a lot more" is a common cry against war, but she means so much more. She is saying that as a homosexual she has been made a sacrifice to God by mainstream believers. They are comforted, at least subconciencely, by the fact that there is a bad guy (or girl) with a face and name in front of them, someone going to Hell so they know they are going to Heaven. I am reminded of one of the Bible verses most overlooked by Christians: "Why do point out the twig in your fellow's eye when you fail to see the log in your own eye?" People are unwilling to accept their own faults and instead try to show God the faults of others. This song is a wonderful snapshot of so many people's fears and their means of dealing with that fear. The world would be such a better place if everybody could hear this song and understand that message

Indigo Girls – Ghost Lyrics 18 years ago
I love the last line. "When I'm baptised by your touch, I am no worse than most." I think she means she would rather be living through this suffering than feel nothing at all. She recognizes that although she has had a tremendous loss of love, so much to write an incredibly powerful and meaningful song, nobody will understand and indeed it is almost standard to have such feelings

Indigo Girls – Least Complicated Lyrics 18 years ago
"What made me think I could start clean slated?" is a great poetic line before the main one. I'm not so sure that it is about her homosexuality, I think this song is trying to convey the message that love isn't something you can force your way into understanding "You just stick the right formula in". Wouldn't it be nice if life were still that simple? She is admitting that she cannot comprehend everything.

Bob Dylan – Girl from the North Country Lyrics 18 years ago
Besides Scarborough Fair Dylan used the chorus of many traditionials, including Land of the Rising Sun, When the Ship comes In, and Leaving of Liverpool (Farewell). This is one of his best songs, I love how he can right a song with so few words and still say so much.

Ben Folds Five – Narcolepsy Lyrics 18 years ago
Ramonis right, it is definitely about depression (Not really narcolepsy). The subject is afraid of rejection in the real world and every time something goes badly or he does something stupid he wants to hide. Likewise when he does something right he worries it sets him up for a bigger failure next time. It could be about drugs or something else, but I think sleep actually means sleep, victims of depresion often sleep to escape.

Indigo Girls – Fare Thee Well Lyrics 18 years ago
One of the saddest songs I know; it is about being afraid of love and getting scared off by a passionate love ... "To thick the heat off those long summer evenings" ... she felt vulnerable and grew emotionally distant until the love left.
