i juts got back from the concert in Atlanta and wow that shit was so awesome - this song was definitely my favorite by far. before the song he basically said what he wrote it about: he was 14 (i think) when his grandma was dying and she was holding onto his hand. she was squeezing it really tight and she wouldn't let go. he said to think about what it would be like in that very moment when you are about to die. going back to the song, i guess she didn't have smile on her face, and he wanted to change her mind. some it is self-explanatory but really powerful - when he says: Where are those secrets now That your too scared to tell I whisper them all aloud so you can hear yourself because there are so many things in our life that we don't want to tell anyone because we have a plan for how we want everything to go - but inevitably there are some people that can't live out these plans because of tragedies and things - i know this isn't what he is referring to because his grandma is dying of old age, but it applies to a lot of other things. (sorry if this is sounding like rambling haha) so just like think about these secrets and how to like secure them in time so the people you care about know that you care about them. ok im done later haha |

haha nevermind, stupid question he's basically saying that he (and life in general) is more complex than people think and that you are the only one who can judge yourself correctly. it is impossible to explain life, and it is impossible to explain everything he lives for - only the individual can decide what is right for them --------that was only one part of the song, the whole song in general, I think is about overcomplicating things. We as humans often do not see the true beauty in small things, and the bad things we magnify when they should not be. ITS ABOUT PICKING YOURSELF UP!!! if you're "sinking", pick yourself up because you will appreciate it in the long run. |

i think this song is about acting on your thoughts and words instead of just sitting there and contemplating useless things it is most prominent in the line "And so often we don't struggle to improve conditions We struggle for the right to say 'we improve conditions'" we don't do what we know is best in many cases, we do what is widely accepted. many people are too afraid to deviate from the norm and act on what the feel is right. im not sure about the man walking across the room part but i think it means how we waste our time on useless things. if you think about it, there isnt really anything accomplished in recording these things in books. "The sounds of a vanishing alphabet Standing here waiting" we are not taking this experience and turning it into something useful - we are just writing it down and accepting it |

I think this song is about a person that has a problem in their life and they can't sleep because it is all they can think about. He/She feels that everyone has given up on them. One the person finds the solution to the problem, they think it is too late, and that the problem will not be fixed. At the end of the song, the person is trying to live for the past, because that was the best part of their life. I tried to keep it broad so it could be interpreted in more ways, but in my opinion, it is about a guy who is writing about a girl. When he talks about the photo album, he wishes he could relive those days. |
