The White Stripes – The Denial Twist Lyrics 3 years ago
@[yoshemitzu:40489] Somehow I find myself here, over 16 years later, and I\'ve realized I got this wrong! It\'s close, and still better than the lyrics provided, but the actual lyrics are:\r\n\r\nYou recognize the effect and the wreck\r\nthat it\'s causin\' when she rocks the boat.\r\nBut it\'s the cause hittin\' on the cardinal laws\r\nabout the proper place to hang her coat.\r\n\r\nSo to you the truth is still hidden\r\nand the soul plays the role of a lost little kitten\r\nbut you should know that the doctors weren\'t kiddin\'\r\nshe\'s been singin\' it all along.

Eminem – Criminal Lyrics 15 years ago
You really missed the whole point of the Marshall Mathers LP. Listen to it again. He says numerous times that he says the shit he says because his public perception keeps elevating the level of insanity he needs to put out. In essence, we, the consumers and the media, and the "think of the children" parents who think he's so awful, turned him into what he is.

Noisettes – Don't Give Up Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about doing something even though people are telling you not to "sometimes they'll wanna cut you down ... If you want to keep up, can you afford to feel? [their criticisms, their attempts at dissuasion]." It's also about when you don't have the willpower to act--"ain't got no desire to go no place." "hand in the flame but she don't feel the fire"--it's time to act, but she can't motivate herself to do it.

Basically, "Don't Give Up" is exactly what it's about. I don't get the "what if I tried to tell you to do what for?" part. Are those the correct lyrics? She kind of slurs them every time (probably because of her British accent).

Great song from one of the best new bands to watch--they defy the multitude of comparisons applied to them. Original and important. Can't wait for the next album.

The White Stripes – A Martyr for My Love for You Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think just because he repeats "teenager" it's referring to a younger girl. In fact, I think the idea of the "teenage dream" is the giggly, innocent love that you experience as a teenager, evidenced by the preceding words "But not as shaky as I must have seemed talking just through her giggle"--they're having unimportant, frivolous conversation, like they're teenagers again. And the first line about her being "sixteen and six feet tall in a crowd of teenagers coming out of the zoo" seems more to me like it's saying she stands out (six feet tall) in a crowd of wild animals (teenagers coming out of the zoo). He's describing how she feels to him, not necessarily her direct age.

Damn good song, no matter how you interpret it, though.

The White Stripes – Little Cream Soda Lyrics 18 years ago
"I even love it when you're faking it" from I'm Slowly Turning Into You, and "Why don't you kick yourself out? you're in an immigrant, too," I would imagine, are your best hints for unlocking this song.

The White Stripes, in all their candy caned goodness, have always been a band that embraces the child's perspective. Jack's stated time and time again that this is the band's message, but perhaps with this song, we can finally see Jack coming to grips with the fact that it USED to be the band's message. While this song laments in general about reminiscing old age, lines like "At which times God screams to me there's nothing left for me to tell you" seem to indicate Jack telling us, the fans, that he's taking the band in a new direction.

But all of the albums the White Stripes have made so far have been a new direction--Get Behind Me Satan was just as radical a change from Elephant as Icky Thump is from anything they've done. This song has a sobering message, but I don't think the future of the White Stripes is in any real danger.

Blues Traveler – Crash Burn Lyrics 18 years ago
Seems like a competition, where they're both battling hard against each other, and it's not sure who's gonna win. They're both gonna put everything out there, and at least the narrator is willing to fall flat on his ass, even if it means he loses.

And that's funny, too, considering the nature of the song. Popper's vocals are really just the backing for what is a searing jam rock track: solos between the verses alternate from the harmonica to the guitar to the bass, Popper, Kinchla, and Sheehan all showing, respectively, that they're all amazing at their instruments. They're competing against each other, too, and each of them throws some crazy solos down.

Great, great song for an incredibly underrated band.

The White Stripes – Icky Thump Lyrics 18 years ago
Jack expands in this song upon the formula set up in "The Nurse"--unexplained, inexplicable tempo changes, no actual chorus, and this is his most polished attempt at it yet.

Interestingly, Jack gets political in this song, something he hasn't done since "The Big Three Killed My Baby." Although it's not a huge statement, just a common resentment toward Americans. He's said many times in interviews that he feels Americans are the least receptive audiences he finds in his shows--that's why he does so much touring all over the world.

What I wonder, though, is if Icky Thump is supposed to be a character or a description of the style of song this is?

The Beatles – All Things Must Pass Lyrics 18 years ago
Yes, Harrison wrote the song, but the Beatles did practice it as a group during the Get Back sessions, so it's as much as "Harrison solo song" as any of the ones he wrote for the band. Yes, he went back and released a different version as a single, and on this version it's just him performing. But Paul McCartney is the only Beatle who performs on "Yesterday," and we don't consider that a Paul McCartney song. "All Things Must Pass" is listed on a Beatles page because the Anthology version can be considered a Beatles version of the song (yes, even though Harrison is the only person performing).

As for the song, I think the Anthology version is far better than Harrison's solo version (which is too layered for such a simple song--if you haven't heard the anthology version, I promise, you'll change your mind). And I agree it's about the way joy is temporary, "all good things must come to an end," etc., but pay attention to the last verse. It's also hopeful: "Daylight is good about arriving at the right time. It's not always gonna be this grey." Interestingly, in the alternate version, Harrison says "It's not always been this grey," which actually isn't as hopeful.

David Bowie – Across the Universe (The Beatles cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
John Lennon sings with Bowie on this cover.

I appreciate how Bowie has given this song a new perspective, and now we can listen to it and appreciate it without the squealing sounds of Lennon's synthesizer experiments.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Beatles' version, too, but it's nice to listen to a less messy version every now and then.

The White Stripes – Stop Breaking Down Lyrics 20 years ago
Those aren't quite the correct lyrics. And it's weird, because EVERY lyrics place has these, even the official White Stripes website. The actual lyrics are:

"I can't walk the streets, now, to consolate my mind
some pretty mama, she starts breaking down
stop breaking down!
a-stop breaking down
The stuff I got is gonna bust your brains out
well, it'll make you lose your mind

You Saturday night women, you love to ape and clown
You won't do nothing but tear a good man's reputation down
Stop breaking down!
Stop breaking down
The stuff I got is gonna bust your brains out
Well, it'll make you lose your mind

I gave my baby the ninety-nine degree
She jumped up a throwed a pistol down on me
Stop breaking down
Stop breaking down
The stuff I got is gonna bust your brains out
Yeah, it'll make you lose your mind."

Maybe if I just get ONE lyrics websites, the rest will realize they're all wrong ....

The White Stripes – Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't think thing song is about Meg/Jack's relationship, not because it didn't exist but because 1. Jack doesn't even want to TALK about it, much less write music about it, and 2. Because even if he did want to talk about it, he wouldn't write music about it.

It's like those who think "Take, Take, Take" is about Jack's insecurity with being famous. Listen to or read some of his interviews. He directly refutes ever writing a song about his personal insecurities, and on "Take, Take, Take" says "it's a song about how kids these days aren't raised with morals." (paraphrased). But this song IS amazing.

The White Stripes – There's No Home For You Here Lyrics 20 years ago
The Amazon.com review dude called this song "Queen-inspired," and you can definitely see it with the multitude of people singing at the beginning and during the chorus. The versus don't sound much like Freddie Mercury, but that's why it's "inspired" and not a "rip-off." Makes sense, too, since they recorded this album in England.

The White Stripes – I Think I Smell A Rat Lyrics 20 years ago
Okay, some people apparently don't realize that the White Stripes are by their nature a minimalist band. The lyrics aren't supposed to be cryptic or earth-shattering, but sometimes they are ("Black Math," "Do," "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground," I could go on for longer). Their whole schtick is that they're NOT about ridiculously complex lyrics. The philosophy is the same as with Japanese art--it's all about minimalism. Americans labor over stanzas and stanzas of poetry, whereas one of the most respected forms of Japanese poetry is a 3-line haiku with a very LIMITED rhyme scheme. Don't look at this song expecting "Stairway to Heaven." The length, lyrics, depth, and message are totally different.

The White Stripes – The Denial Twist Lyrics 20 years ago
The correct lyrics for the hard-to-understand verse are:
"You recognize the effect and the fact
that it's comin' when she rocks the boat.
But it's the cause hittin' on the cardinal laws
about the proper place to hang her coat.

So to you the truth is still hidden
and the soul plays the role of a lost little kitten
but you should know that the doctors weren't kiddin'
she's been singin' in all along."

I think it's insane that so many people seem to forget this song because I honestly believe it's one of the best songs in the White Stripes repertoire. The lyrics flow so unbelievably well--probably the most free-flowing song they have--and it's lyrics are so well-written and meaningful. Who can't relate to this song? Anyone who hasn't had any relationships, I guess.
