Within Temptation – The Cross Lyrics 13 years ago
I too think it is a religious song. It sounds to me like it is sung from God's point of view, calling out to non-believers, forever calling them back to Him. To help take the weight of the cross (sin) from Christ's shoulders. It is a plea for the prodigal sons and daughters to return to Him. He keeps asking why they are waiting to embrace Him, though He calls their names over and over. He sheds tears of sorrow as they continue to deny Him even as He stands there in front of them.
I am an agnostic, so I can't help but feel this song is being sung directly to me. It's just such a beautiful song I can't help but be moved by it. Definitely one of the best songs off of a stellar album.

Slash – Promise Lyrics 13 years ago
I love Cornell's voice so much on this song. Probably my favorite song on Slash's album.
When I listen to the lyrics, I visualize Cornell singing to a child, warning him/her about how the world can be such a difficult place. Just don't ever let them put out your fire.

Stone Sour – Death Dance Of The Frog Fish Lyrics 14 years ago
Jeez, when/where did Stone Sour cover this song? I remember hearing this on the oldie's station all the time when I was growing up! I actually want to hear their version out of morbid curiosity...

Soundgarden – Tighter & Tighter Lyrics 14 years ago
Sorry genius, but this is off of Down on the Upside, not Superunknown.
I can see some of the drug references, but it seems a little bit of a stretch to me. I'm hearing a song about regret, whether it be caused by looking Death in the face or just physical leaving. Either way it's an incredibly moving song. Probably my favorite Soundgarden song of all.

Chickenfoot – Turnin' Left Lyrics 14 years ago
Killer song, and definitely one of my favorites by Chickenfoot. I think it's supposed to be about a NASCAR race, of all things. That's what Hagar was talking about before they played the song in one live clip I just watched. Kinda dumb, but it's still a great song!

Tony Iommi – Meat Lyrics 15 years ago
Wow. This song is just epic. Iommi owns it with his monster riffing, as he always does. I'd never heard of Skin before, but she is powerful on this song. To me it seems to be about how women are treated like pieces of meat in today's society. Men are so shallow, they only pick the best cuts of meat (the prettiest girls) and then toss them away and find another ones they aren't as good any more many years down the road.
And I am a guy, for the record.

Iron Maiden – Age Of Innocence Lyrics 15 years ago
For the record, this has nothing to do with the novel of the same name, as I was unfortunate enough to discover. What an awful book.
As for the songs meaning, it looks pretty clear-cut. It's all about the sad state of the world really, where civilized society doesn't really do enough to protect the people that really need the protection.

Iced Earth – Dracula Lyrics 15 years ago
You guys sound like you have it down pretty good. I just now finished reading the original "Dracula" novel and did some reading around Wikipedia to fill in the gaps. This song definitely sounds like it's inspired more by Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 film "Bram Stoker's Dracula," which obviously is based on the novel but adds an original introduction where Dracula's true love is taken from him long before he becomes the terrible vampire. The novel has no mention whatsoever about Dracula being motivated by revenge, so that movie (and subsequently this song) paint him as a slightly more tragic figure.
This is one of my favorite Iced Earth songs, no doubt about it. I love how heavy it gets after the slow, soft intro, and then when Matt hits the high notes! The best!

Jerry Cantrell – Pig Charmer Lyrics 15 years ago
You never know, cataclysm0. I actually figured this song was about Jerry being a shut-in while writing the album until you guys started talking about the drug addiction connection. That definitely makes sense, considering Jerry and Layne's past addictions. I remember reading about how "Psychotic Break" is about Jerry slowly losing his mind while writing "Degradation Trip," and my first image about this song was Jerry holed up in his apartment for months writing songs, never showering or changing his clothes. Of course, he easily could have been drugged up on something at the time, so maybe both interpretations apply here.

Black Sabbath – Into The Void Lyrics 15 years ago
Lemme clear it up for you, guy. Obviously, the lyrics deal with the environmental destruction of the Earth, which Sealth warned against. That's why when Soundgarden did a cover of this song in 1992, they replaced the original lyrics with the text of Sealth's famous speech. I don't think that's what Sabbath in mind with the original cut though, even though you can easily see the connection.

Disturbed – Midlife Crisis (Faith No More cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm surprised no one's commented on this. It's not a bad cover, but the original by Faith No More is a lot better. I never knew what the original was about, and I still don't, though.

Disturbed – Fade to Black (Metallica cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
Dan Donegan has become a better and better guitarist on each successive Disturbed album. I bet that if Disturbed still plays this song live, Dan plays the solo now. But the fact that back when they recorded this cut of it (You can find it on the 'Music as a Weapon II' live album I think.) they didn't even try to play the guitar solo or the rest of the song that comes afterward makes this cover irrelevant. Don't get me wrong, I like Disturbed a lot. But if you're going to try to cover one of the all-time greats, you've got to really put your all in to it. Half-assing it just won't cut it. As a result, this isn't even in the same ballpark as the original.

Trivium – He Who Spawned The Furies Lyrics 15 years ago
You're both right. It just depends on what mythology you're looking at. In Greek mythology, it's Cronus and Zeus, but to the Romans it was Saturn and Jupiter. The two mythologies have a lot of crossover, just with different names.
As for this song, it is absolutely killer! "The Crusade" was my first Trivium album, but I was going to pass on "Shogun" when I heard it was more in the style of the first two albums. Then I heard this song and decided to get the album.

Metallica – I Disappear Lyrics 15 years ago
I know this song was written while Jason was still in the band, but you can't help but see the correlation to his departure. Especially since this was his last song with the band, you can't help but wonder if it's about him. Now, we know that Jason didn't write it. Lars and James traditionally wrote everything, and notoriously didn't let Jason have input on anything. But the line "Just as soon as I belong, then it's time I disappear" has always sounded to me like it's about Jason. We all know that he was hazed during his entire tenure with the band. The others took out their frustrations about Cliff's death on him for years. But now that Jason finally had become part of the Metallica family, he wanted out. So he left. I'm not saying James wrote this about Jason to push him away. But maybe it was one of those subconscious things. When it was written I don't think it was supposed to be about Jason, but looking back on it, it's hard not to see it.

Metallica – The Four Horsemen Lyrics 15 years ago
Obviously it's based off the imagery of the apocalypse found in the Bible. The Four Horsemen come down to Earth to signal the end of days. The band is projecting this image onto themselves, since there are coincidentally four members of Metallica. I know I'm confused as to why they changed the War Horseman into Time though. War just seems to fit the whole theme best of all, you know?

Helloween – Mr. Torture Lyrics 15 years ago
This song rocks big time! The music is ferociously dark, but the lyrics are so tongue-in-cheek silly I love it! I think it's just about the whole BDSM sort of lifestyle mixed with the sort of obsession people have with 'torture-porn' films ("Saw," "Hostel, etc.). I think it's safe to say this isn't based off of anything real. Just call him up on his 800 number for only .60 cents a minute and then check him out on his website for a live chat? I know I laugh out loud every time I hear the line "Mr. Torture sells pain to the housewives in Spain; He knows just what they crave, Mr. Torture." It's all in good fun, guys!

Audioslave – Like a Stone Lyrics 15 years ago
It's definitely about coming to terms with mortality in my opinion. I think there's a religious tint to it too. Chris has been reading a "book full of death" (The Bible) and he's begun to worry about the afterlife. He wonders if he's led a life good enough to go to the good place where all his friends have gone. He doesn't really know the best way there, so he's just hoping that somehow, some religion will offer him the path to rest. He looks back on his life and doesn't really likes what he sees, so he just sits there and waits to see what happens, and where he goes when he dies.

It's incredibly deep and beautiful (in a sad way). As a staunch agnostic myself, I know I may find myself in these same shoes someday.

Disturbed – Inside the Fire Lyrics 16 years ago
No need for me to weigh in on what the song really means, as pretty much everyone has already nailed the pretty obvious meaning behind it. But, man, as if this song wasn't unsettling enough by itself, the video is so graphic it actually contains a disclaimer directing anyone thinking about suicide to the Suicide Prevention Hotline. Disturbing as Hell (bad pun intended).

White Zombie – More Human Than Human Lyrics 16 years ago
Just a clarification point: In "Blade Runner," the line Roy Batty actually says is "I want more life, father." He says it to the man who actually created him. Obviously, Zombie took it a little out of context, but it definitely sounds like they were big fans of the movie.

Disturbed – Perfect Insanity Lyrics 16 years ago
I'll clarify before people start swarming this page with questions: This song was first included on Disturbed's "M.O.L." DVD back in 2002, thought it wasn't officially released. Now it has been reworked with a few new lyrics and will be included on their upcoming album, "Indestructible."

Pyramaze – Sleepy Hollow Lyrics 16 years ago
Sounds like it's based off of Tim Burton's 1999 film of the same name, which took a lot of liberties with the original Washington Irving story. In this version, Ichabod Crane comes to Sleepy Hollow to investigate a number of murders, but the town's residents believe a headless horseman is responsible for them. Crane doesn't believe it, and even when he sees the horseman is real, he remains convinced there is a logical explanation for it all and uncovers a plot where a certain someone is commanding the horseman for their own purposes.

Demons & Wizards – Dorian Lyrics 16 years ago
This is probably my favorite D&W song, behind Fiddler on the Green. It's so twisted! I'm only passingly familiar with 'The Picture of Dorian Gray,' but I already knew that's what this song was based on. I really need to go read the story now.

Iced Earth – Cast In Stone Lyrics 16 years ago
scratch my previous comment. this is indeed an early song, maybe from the Purgatory years, but it's not on "Enter The Realm," (The were Iced Earth by the time they released that EP), but it is on both "Alive in Athens" and "Days Of Purgatory."

Iron Maiden – Age Of Innocence Lyrics 16 years ago
Does anyone think this song might be inspired by the Edith Wharton novel of the same name? I haven't read it yet, but I'm required to for a course I'm taking right now. Once I've read it, I'll comment on any similarities, but I just thought I'd throw that out there for now.

Demons & Wizards – Terror Train Lyrics 16 years ago
Yea, that's who i mean, Hybrid. The camera never gets close enough to tell for sure, and the best shots of him come during the 2nd and 3rd choruses (approx 2:30 and 4:00). It does look like him from afar, and I think it would be a subtle reference for him to be there, especially since each time he appears over Jon's shoulder.

Mushroomhead – Erase the Doubt Lyrics 17 years ago
It sounds to me more like a questioning religion type of song. It sounds like he's questioning a fallen angel, trying to either get the angel to understand why he enjoys the dark side, or to get the angel to convince him there's something more he should believe in.

Iron Maiden – The Clansman Lyrics 17 years ago
If it had been about the KKK, it would have been called "The Klansman." I think that interpretation is a bit of a stretch anyway.

Iced Earth – Cast In Stone Lyrics 17 years ago
This song comes originally from their demo CD, "Enter The Realm," if I recall correctly, back when they were still called Purgatory, I think. But this is the same song as "Written on the Walls," just different lyrics. With that in mind, why play this at Alive in Athens if they thought it needed to be redone anyway?

Stone Sour – Bother Lyrics 17 years ago
I just got back from Stone Sour's show in Columbus, OH. During this song, Corey had to stop right before the third verse ("Wish I'd died instead of lived") and said this:
"I'm kinda in a bad mood. I'm sorry if I'm not my usual self right now, but one of my close family members died, and I just found out about it about an hour before the show." After we did some cheering and chanting for him, he finished the song, and then played "Sweet Home Alabama" to cheer himself up. He later said it was his uncle that had died.

Demons & Wizards – Terror Train Lyrics 17 years ago
So this might sound crazy, but I was just watching the video for this song. Look in the background in some of the scenes when Jon is playing in the train. In some of the shots, you can see someone over his shoulder singing in the background. It's clearly not Hansi. I actually think it's Tim Owens. Anybody else think so? You can find the video on Google if you haven't seen it.

Iced Earth – Diary Lyrics 17 years ago
The third line of the third verse should read:
"That of a dead prophet"
That said, that verse is obviously about Jesus. I still don't know what the connection between Jesus and Dracula is, but since this same thing was talked about in the song "Dracula" I'll have to assume it's true.

Velvet Revolver – Money Lyrics 17 years ago
Holy crap, Scott Weiland, what are you doing?? Don't get me wrong, I love 'Contraband,' and am eagerly awaiting the next album, but this song, and also 'Come On, Come In,' are not that great. The original of this song is amazing, but what did you do to it? You slowed it down too much, Slash's wah-wahing doesn't do anything to improve it, and you actually sound stoned while singing it! What were you thinking?

Stone Sour – 30/30-150 Lyrics 17 years ago
In a recent interview with Revolver magazine, Corey was asked what '30/30-150' meant. He replied something along the lines of it was extremely personal, and he wasn't going to tell anyone outside of the band. And that was the last question of the interview. Seems a strange place to end it, unless Corey got upset and ended it.

So it looks like this song is about something very very personal to Corey. What could the gun be referring to?

Apocalyptica – Seemann (Rammstein Cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
I actually don't care too much for this cover. The music is played beautifully, as the guys in Apocalyptica are immensely talented. However, I do not like the choice of having Hagen provide vocals. She sings the words much too harshly (it's supposed to be an emotional song, for crying out loud!), and she puts emphasis on some syllables that just sound odd. Lastly, have you seen the video for this song? She is just plain freaky, and totally ruins the mood of the song.

Stone Sour – Blotter Lyrics 18 years ago
It's a song about a serial rapist. He's crazy with lust and desire, thinking it's love. He wants to feel someone else next to him, and the sensation is physcically amazing. He doesn't care about scaring her, cuz he just needs to have her to feel better about himself. Then in the end he kills her. "Blotter" could refer to the police blotter that reports his crime/arrest in the newspaper.

Rob Zombie – Brick House 2003 Lyrics 18 years ago
I personally think this song is hilarious. This song was begging for Zombie to cover it. I mean really, he's all about sex, tongue-in-cheek humor and shock horror. If he can get all of those into one song, he's had a good day. He got 2 out of 3 here, so that's not too bad.
