Chairlift – Bruises Lyrics 11 years ago
I always wonder if the first line of this song came from the beginning of this Das Racist video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xmq9T0MZ_RQ

I really hope so.

The National – Secret Meeting Lyrics 15 years ago
I see this song slightly differently.

Have you ever gone somewhere and realized that someone that you didn't want or expect to see is there? And then instead of doing the grown-up thing and going over saying hello and dealing with the awkwardness, you simply pretend that you don't see them.

That's what the song is about to me.

In the song, I think the person in question is an ex girlfriend or lover. The spies are the people that know he's there. The gracefully disappear part obviously fits this line of interpretation. The sunglasses line is presumably about, how she did everything she could for him but he still decided not to be with her.

In the chorus, I think he is admitting that he is ashamed and regretful about how he handled the situation but he had a "secret meeting" in the less savory parts of his brain and did the "dull and wicked ordinary" thing. I think the "dull and wicked ordinary way" line actually has two meanings. He is talking about the night in question and the relationship as a whole.

The rest of the song seems to be different variations of what he already said. The only other parts are the sharks line, which can easy fit my reading of the song, and the Ace/Folding section that I agree is about folding a good hand, or in this case not pursuing a relationship with a good girl.

Great song by a great band.

Ryan Adams – Shakedown on 9th Street Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about getting into a fight at one of his shows because someone is messin' with his girl. Messin' meaning bothering her not getting with her. "i was just gonna hit 'em
but i'm gonna kill 'em now."

Luna – Double Feature Lyrics 16 years ago
I think its more about a guy who loved someone but has come to the realization that he no longer has the same feelings for them. It seems more like his outlook has changed then him. It's like when the things you used to think were cute become annoying.

Luna – Chinatown Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about someone that keeps going out on the town because it's his favorite thing to do. He keeps going out even though he knows it's causing him to slack at work and that he'll get in trouble if he gets caught. It seems that he finally comes to the realization that it's time to fess up and face the music.

"did you dress me down and liquor me up
to make me last for the minute
when the red comes over you
like it does when you're filled with love
or whatever you call it"

Looks like she got him drunk so that he'd last until she gets off.

Calexico – Guero Canelo Lyrics 16 years ago
Guero Canalo is actually a highly regarded taco stand in southern Tucson. I think the song is actually about southern Tucson, the cities ghetto, which is known to have both drug and gang problems, as well as being the home of Guero Canalo.

TV on the Radio – Blind Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't understand the second half all that well. It seems that in the first half ,he sees a girl and he thinks she is from his past but isn't certain. It's pretty cool as I think everyone has at some point stared at someone and asked "is that who I thiink it is?"

Bob Dylan – North Country Blues Lyrics 17 years ago
I read that it was his FIRST song written from the perspective of a women. You can't figure that out from the song. Also I don't think anyone needs advice on how to enjoy Dylan. A little supplemental reading never hurt anyone. Especially when the artist in question generally writes relatively dense lyrics. Finally, what the fuck are you doing here if you don't think we should be reading about Dylan's songs.

Morphine – Thursday Lyrics 17 years ago
I'll gladly make the first post.

I've had this cd for a while now and have barely ever listened to it (maybe once as background music). The other day I made a mix with a song for everyday of the week and used this one because it was the only song I had with Thursday in the title. Now I love this song and will be giving the album a good, hard listen. I'm well excited.

As for the song, I think the story speaks for itself.

Spoon – I Summon You Lyrics 17 years ago
I think pookachoo almost has it. I think the lead singer is in jail but I don't think he summons his lover for sex. I seems to me that he summons her to help him brake out. Though after reading it a second time either one of us could be right, or we could both be wrong. The prison theme does seem to fit into the long distance relationship aspect that Brit mentioned, particularly since musicians don't usually like to give to much info about what their songs are about.

Spoon – Was It You? Lyrics 17 years ago
I like that interpretation. I always thought of it like the narrator is at the police station trying to pick the culprit out of a lineup. I like the idea of someone getting caught being risqué. I find it particularly funny because just today I was driving behind some kid that was getting roadhead from his girl. They thought they were all slick but I knew what was going on. I regret not honking the horn. Oh well. I bet the song is going to remind me of that from now on.

It's crazy how someone can be such a big part of your life and then suddenly they're not a part of it at all. The swirilling guitars really express the surreal aspect of the scene. The song makes it seem like contour is just a blur. Great tune.

The Fiery Furnaces – Sullivan's Social Slub Lyrics 17 years ago
The verses are what the people do during the week or in thier respective lives and the chorus explains how they all go down to Sullivans on Saturday. I think all the words are mispronouced because everyone is drunk.

Guided by Voices – A Good Flying Bird Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about the innocence of youth, the troubles of adult life, and how we remain who were when we were younger. We don't change all that much. What changes is the circumstances of our lives and the consequences of our actions.

Calexico – No Doze Lyrics 17 years ago
I think its about someone lost on the desert. They are exhausted but know that if they fall asleep they will not be found and will die. That's just what it makes me think of. Also the music has a really bleek sound to it. I get the feeling that there isn't a happy ending. Sounds like he dozed.

Calexico – Across the Wire Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song. I can't believe I'm the first to comment. It's fairly obviously about two brothers trying to sneak into the states. Most of the tunes on Feast of Wire seem to be about Arizona, the Southwest, and the border. I find it particularly interesting that in addition to being about the Southwest they are able to make the album sound like the Southwest.

The National – Mr. November Lyrics 18 years ago
Some interesting interpretations of this song. I don't know what its actually about but I have two points to make. First I know it's common knowledge that Reggie Jackson is Mr. October but, being from NY, I don't think that its as widely known that Derek Jeter is Mr. November for the same reason as Reggie except the season now ends in November. Second I was wondering why the album was called Alligator as well and thiink its because of the line in City Middle "I wanna go gator around the warm beds of beginners". It seems like the album is a testament to being a lowdown dirty creature that devours women. Just my take ofcourse.

The National – You've Done It Again, Virginia Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of the few really straight forward National songs. The end, where he asks if she is still awake and then asks how close he is to losing her is really vivid. I can totally see the scene in my head. The whole thing makes me sad.

Wilco – Box Full of Letters Lyrics 18 years ago
This one sounds like its from Jeff Tweedy with love to Jay Farrar. Alot of the tunes on AM are breakup songs which makes me think that thery'e really about the break up of Uncle Tupelo. This one in particular strikes me as being about Uncle Tupelo b/c of the records line, and because there's no lovey dovey stuff. On a lot of the other songs there is a lot of ambiguity as to whether it a romantic breakup or not, but on this one he never really alludes to romance, he just wants to be friends again. Also it seems to me that the questions that he doesn't have answers too are the ones from the media.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away Lyrics 18 years ago
I have a bit of a different take on the song. I think the main character has meet someone new and is trying toforget the Cool Godess" that came before. The line "In a different way" always sounded like a good thing to me. It seems like he's saying that he's never met someone like you before. Thats why I don't think its about someone that has changed for the worst.

To me it sounds like he is trying to forget the past and move on but the memory of this girl makes him fearful of getting hurt again.

Wilco – Casino Queen Lyrics 18 years ago
Pretty straight forward tune about being down on your luck on the Casino Queen. Being a Yankee Hotel Foxtrot convert I guess this is what's meant by Alt Country. I like it. The riff at the beginning is great and I'm cool with any song that utilizies the cowbell.

Wilco – I Must Be High Lyrics 18 years ago
Like most of the songs on AM this tune is about breaking up. I always thought the song was about regret sfter the fact, but after listening to it with the break up of Uncle Tupelo in mind, I was struck by the songs anger. The regret about Uncle Tupelo's demise is still present but the lines,

"And you never looked in my eyes,
Long enough to find any piece of mind
But now you got it"

strike me as the songs centerpiece and Tweedy's first shot at Jay Farrar.

Wilco – Company In My Back Lyrics 18 years ago
This song makes me realize the extent of Jeff Tweedy's genius. I’ve read numerous interviews with Jeff Tweedy where he states that one of the things that he loves about being a songwriter / artist, is that his art doesn't end with him. It's completed by the listener. Every song has a different meaning to anyone that hears it. He deliberately leaves holes that make it difficult for the listener to grasp what he is explicitly talking about. By doing so the story is lost but the emotion stays and takes a different form within each listener.

Anyway I'm telling all that because I just heard an interview with Jeff Tweedy where he said that this song is written from the point of view of a bug encroaching upon a picnic. The bug is so attracted to the female that he is willing to risk his life just to get close to her. Read the lyrics it makes sense. The real point of the song is all the different takes on this page.

David Bowie – Five Years Lyrics 18 years ago
While “Ziggy” is a concept album I don't think you can simply say that all other meaning is thrown out the window. I think that this is Ziggy saying that we (earth) have five years left. Bowie chose the length of time, five years, as a result of a dream in which his deceased father told him he must never fly again and would die in five years.

He describes the whole episode so vividly. He starts with the news-guy proclaiming Armageddon and goes into his and other people’s reactions. In between he talks of what is great about life:

Material:
"telephones, opera house, favourite melodies
I saw boys, toys, electric irons and TVs."

and not:
all the fat-skinny people, etc.

Ziggy is supposed to be from outer-space but I see it as a metaphor for him being different. When he learns that its all going to end he just wants to go home to Mom. At heart Ziggy is just a confused kid like the rest of us. No matter how old you are.

Wilco – Pick Up The Change Lyrics 18 years ago
I think he's saying that they've become extremely similar but that she is still better then him. He's asking her to help make up the difference.

The Walkmen – The Rat Lyrics 19 years ago
I certainly recommend this album. I love just about everysong on it. Every review that I read says that the album is great but it gets overshadow because of its two strikingly great tracks on it ("The Rat" and "Little House of Savages"). Personally I think that the rest of the album is generally as good as and sometimes better then the two songs in question. "The Rat" is my second favorite on the album behind the title track. What makes those two tracks standout is that they're loud, fast, and most straight forward then the majority of the other songs. Upon further listening the other tracks develop and are just as amazing.

I think Tweedy is playing with the with the belief that everyone had at the turn of the century that the world was going to end. It's like he's thinking about what he needs to survive in his bomb shelter and she's all he can think of. Sweet.
