| They Might Be Giants – Kiss Me, Son Of God Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song is a perfect descriptor of Ronald Reagan. | |
| Bob Dylan – If You See Her, Say Hello Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Its incredible how as small a line as "she might be in Tangier" can characterize the girl he's talking about... Tangier was a melting pot of junkies, artists, and intellectuals, during the 50's. | |
| Joanna Newsom – Monkey & Bear Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I'd always thought, upon listening, that the last lines are: "Left there! Left there! ONE Bear, left BARE! Left There! Left There! ONE Bear, step clear of the Bear!" I don't have the lyricbook though, so I don't know. That got me thinking that she drowned in the seaside caverns, or something more awful. But that was my interpretation just from hearing them. I agree more with the constellation idea. |

| The Knife – Like a Pen Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song immediately brings to mind the burlesque and cabaret. It opens in a warped broadway vibe, with the percussion in the style of the shifting, baton bearing divas of the stage. Easiily my favorite off the album, even though I have to admit I was immediately hostile upon first listening. I agree with barney18, as the last line ("will it show, in my show") brings to mind the worry that someone will notice the depths to which the person afflicted has sunk. The song, at any rate, is meant to convey a perverted sense of the theatre, just as the anorexia of actressess and models is a perversion of the human display. | |
| Liars – Broken Witch Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I believe the reference to the White Witch and such is about Chronicles of Narnia. That ties in with the Harry Potter stuff too. | |
| Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – Raining In Darling Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
... and I know you love me. Such a beautiful, happy, and damned depressing song. |

| The Fiery Furnaces – Benton Harbor Blues Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This is my favorite Fiery Furnaces song. It's so catchy, illustrated, and poignant. Just a perfect pop-blues song, simple and strong. | |
| The Fiery Furnaces – Chief Inspector Blancheflower Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Oh, and it occurred to me that the character Eleanor "sings" is in fact Chief Inspector Blancheflower, and that Eleanor's singing his part is just for musical effect. | |
| The Fiery Furnaces – Chief Inspector Blancheflower Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Ok, here's my interpretation for this song: The title character, Chief Inspector Blancheflower, begins by recounting his joining the police force. When he was growing up, he had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, so he couldn't ever focus, and he did poorly in school. He couldn't be the "typewriter mender" he had always wanted to be, and so he joined the police force. The line "Put my head down crumple my paper" refers to the frustration he felt when he could not focus on a specific idea, and thus he throws it out. It also seems he might be mildly retarded, because when he goes to look in the future-job index of his high school, the counselor has to "reinforce" him with raisins and stars and things of that nature. Anyways, after Blancheflower's recount of the start of his career, the scene unfolds: On the 14th of May in Dumbarton, a crime scene has been discovered, and a farmer supposedly killed someone. The lady (Eleanor) has a discussion on how it happened. There are three versions, all with different weapons and victims. Eleanor starts to interview someone (perhaps the farmer?), and asks where the wife is.The man admits to killing he (he says, "Nowhere you'll see", meaning you'll never find the body). Then they lock him up in the storeroom (maybe in lack of an interrogation room/holding cell?). The line I'm confused about is, who Sir Robert Grayson is. Maybe he's some literary allusion, or just a figure of the town? After the interviews (the first with a local "publican", or tavern-keeper, the second possibly with the "postcoach" driver, and the last possibly with Sir Robert Grayson, whoever he is), Eleanor gets a confession from a man who's killed his brother Michael because he started a relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Jenny. Jenny might possibly have been killed as well, and I believe this "deposition" (testimony) is a confession to the original crime scene. All this is set in, I believe, rural Illinois, not too far from Springfield. The last line of the song goes back to someone, but I can't figure out who. My guess is it is Chief Inspector Blancheflower, as a conclusion to his role in the investigation. It never mentioned that Blancheflower was married, however. Anyways, that's my interpretation. IT really helped to map it all out like this. This is a GREAT song, my favorite off of Blueberry Boat. I love Matthew's stories, even if they're hard to figure out. |

| The Dismemberment Plan – Ellen and Ben Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Nebraska is an album by Bruce Springsteen. That could be what he's referring to. |
|
| Devendra Banhart – Korean Dogwood Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
last line is: For it's got no worth. |
|
| Devendra Banhart – Heard Somebody Say Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Of course, I haven't heard very many. | |
| Devendra Banhart – Heard Somebody Say Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| This is probably the greatest protest song of the new millenium. | |
| Imogen Heap – Hide and Seek Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I agree with Festijunk. It'd sound a whole lot better without all the vocal alterations. He's got such a good voice. That sound would sound 30 times more beautiful if instead of computer-altered vocal harmonies, he just naturally harmonized with himself. With all the computer stuff, it's too superficial. Which, I guess, is why it was on the OC. | |
| Death Cab for Cutie – Bend to Squares Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Like some have said, this song is not about actual suicide. It's about suicide through lifestyle. "What a way to cut lengthwise" can't be saying "You actually cut your wrists" because of how it's stated. It's emphasizing the "way" to cut lengthwise, not the "cut lengthwise" part. And I think Ben Gibbard is above comparing suicide techniques, so obviously it's about killing yourself with a lifestyle/habit/escape. | |
| The Mars Volta – Son et Lumière Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| on thier website, they describe Julio as ridden with scars, and that his arm was shriveled from injecting rat poison. That's what I think they mean by "skin will need a graft" part. | |
| My Chemical Romance – This Is The Best Day Ever Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| dogmantos, he doesn't anymore. about halfway through this cd, he and Mikey started doing hardcore drugs. They almost broke up, because Gerard would be soooo bad on stage because of the drugs, that Frankie and Ray just didn't want to play, and it got them down. So now Gerard is clean, he got help and stuff. Of course, he possibly didn't do them when you posted that. | |

| Poison the Well – Material Christ Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| also the above post was directed to the people posting, not the song. i understand the song is not about attacking Christianity, but speaking out against the evil people ruling the church these days, which i agree with. the true Spirit of Christ is not found in a bracelet manufactured by a corporation to attain millions by playing off of christians' desires to show their faith in the most mundane and universally recognized way as possible. | |
| Poison the Well – Material Christ Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| man... i hate it when being a Christian obviously makes you a "mindless sheep" because you obviously can't think for yourself and believe in God at the same time. I mean, because at least we've experienced something first-hand (i.e. Relationship with Jesus that we AS INDIVIDUAL THINKERS percieve our feelings to be), while people who support evolution (not to be confused with Natural selection) have never actually carbon-dated monkey fossils. Face it, if we Christians are "sheep" merely because we believe that intelligence does not corrupt nature (just because we are intelligent beings does not make us do what we do, dolphins are intelligent but they don't murder and faction themselves against other dolphins based on appearance or anything of the such. They just exist, harmonious in a sense with the balance of nature without humans, which destroy and pillage and basically have completely wrecked the Earth, leading me to the belief that the presence of a soul, which has been tainted through sin, drives us to think and basically choose whether we exert our true evil on the world or not), then you, not being a scientist or an archeologist but basically copy and paste facts from a textbook or website, are just as much a "sheep" or "tool" or whatever helps you sleep at night. | |
| Poison the Well – Jesus Drove a Cadillac AKA Material Christ Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I love it when people who have no ties to religion try and lecture me about my God. It's not so much as offensive as it is amusing, knowing they advocate a position that's supposed to be open-minded about all religions due to the fact they have none themselves. | |
| Jimmy Eat World – Polaris Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I believe that it's about more about the woman not knowing his feelings, mostly from the lines, as well as the chorus, "I'm done there's nothing left to show, try but i can't let go, are you happy where you're standing still? Do you really want the sugar pill?" I feel like it says she basically picks the safe relationships, and never really lets her emotions show, but he's leaving and it's going to be hard to do that, because she'll never really know. Just sort of my opinion, mostly because it ties in with my own life. | |
| My Chemical Romance – I Never Told You What I Do For a Living Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| i love "And it's better off this way, so much better of this way, I CAN'T CLEAN THE BLOOD OFF THE SHEETS IN MY BED!!!" def. best part. | |
| Death Cab for Cutie – Styrofoam Plates Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Samuel hit the nail on the head. The truth may matter to the artist, but when writing music, you must create a feeling for the fans to accept, and make what they will with it. | |
| Death Cab for Cutie – Styrofoam Plates Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| i think it is fictional because it's set in Denver, and unless someone other than Ben wrote it, then it couldn't have been real, unless he changed the town for the sake of his life. | |
| Alkaline Trio – One Hundred Stories Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| Yeah... this was the first song that I'd heard sung by Dan. At first, I liked it, but it just didn't feel right. Now, it definantly does. It just took 2 days of listening to the cd to become one of my favorite songs. The way he sings it is brilliant. I can really relate to the "Dream a good one tongiht, I'll listen to the bad ones when they come. Get up in my ear, 'til i hear every word, with every turn of your tongue, i will tighten my grip." brilliant. | |
| Alkaline Trio – Mr. Chainsaw Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I think the "Better now to be alive" part of the song is sarcastic, not hopeful, because taken in context, it's describing his "life" and it seems like a pretty shitty one. "Sleeping is my 9 to 5, I'm having nightmares all time". It doesn't sound like he's describing a life he particularly enjoys. This song isn't about hope in my eyes. It seems more that he's trying to justify being alone and growing up, by pretending everything is good when it's not is the best way to go about life. It's about giving in, and comprising your beliefs and your passions to the wear and tear of life. It also tries reasoning with loneliness, and all these things that bring someone down, to giving up on ever trying to make something of themselves. That's just how I take it. | |
