Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song means whatever you want it to. Unbelievable how a simple song can be so personal, yet so universal. Although if someone asks me my take on the song, I normally just say "loneliness", I'll try to break it down...

"So you think you can tell" lines- what's good or bad, who's happy or sad is not always easy to understand. You can't tell, trust me.

"heroes for ghosts?" - people you look up to and what do "do right by", aren't as significant anymore.

"Hot ashes for trees/ Hot air for a cool breeze?" - changing active life for standing still.

"a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?" - a regular role in something huge (life/ the world) for being the only significant one in your bubble.

"We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl"
running over the same old ground. What have we found?"
The same old fears,
wish you were here."

I can't bring myself to try to "break down" that part of this song. It is too perfect, there are no other words that can explain it nearly as well.

Well that was your mistake. Most Floyd songs can't be broked down into accepted facts, you have to find out what it means to you.

Pink Floyd – Stay Lyrics 16 years ago
Several mistakes in the lyrics..

"PUT" one down.
"RACK" my brain.
"try to remember your name", NO "don't.

To me, it's about a girl I knew once upon a time. For a time it was great, but before I knew it we had drifted apart to a point where we barely know eachother. Not much left to say other than 'goodbye'.

David Gilmour – On an Island Lyrics 16 years ago
You're way off Steve.. For one, Gilmour is an athiest. For two, when he plays this live he starts with something like "this is a song about how old friends live on in your memory after they're gone".

What you think of as 'spiritual', he meant as describing a dream.

I have no idea how you got something about sex from walking to the harbour, but that is just a dream of walking with a friend to a familiar place.

It's "the" warmth beside you. There's nobody physically actually there, again it refers to an old friend.

Pink Floyd – The Final Cut Lyrics 17 years ago
No, the song is not about people selling 'Pink''s story... There's one line that refers to that, but it is far from the meaning of the song. The shotgun has nothing to do with "the wall", or Pink. It was put in to distance the song from the album "The Wall".

Pink's story is told in the movie, he's not a recurring character in PF's music..

There's not really that much info about it.. "The Man and the Journey" is basically just a set list from some of their early concerts.

spamonkey7... Watch "The Wall", or listen to the full album, then tell me what you think the song is about. I know the easiest way to interpret a song that mentions a needle is that it's all about drugs, but open your mind..
Read some other comments here, basically everyone who has listened to more songs on "The Wall" than this and Another Brick part 2 know it's not about heroin. The people saying it's about drugs have only heard of "The Wall" and dsotm, and don't understand PF's music.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, Wish You Were Here is simply about loneliness. If I knew someone who had never felt lonely, I'd say listen to this song- that's how it feels.

It's not directly about Syd, I'm sure Waters was thinking about him when he wrote it.

Shopa- I think it's just a reference to the saying "as you make your bed, so you must lie upon it". So she's making an effort to be unhappy.

Sydyoucrazydiamond--
To me it's not about depression at all. "Comfortably Numb" is void of emotion, not full of sadness. It's a state of being, not a feeling.

verona--
it's almost comical to suggest that everyone is "comfortably numb". The Wall isn't a commentary on society, it's a story.

ps- You people who say this is about drugs are really starting to bother me. Please read posts like mirq's... Breaking Pink Floyd's music down to the high off a drug is really sad... Listen to "Move Your Mind" by Matt Mays for me. You really shouldn't feel welcome in a conversation about Pink Floyd if you believe its all about drugs.

Snailman- I don't think he's decided to leave her. No lyric really suggests that.

I'm also not 100% convinced that she doesn't love him anymore (though it is likely), she could love him but be depressed.

I think the first 6 lines are about dreaming about your old friends (ghosts). The island is the place your mind goes when you 'share a dream' with your old friends.

Ben Harper – Burn One Down Lyrics 18 years ago
most posts here are pretty ironic...

You can interpret it as about herb.

You can use it completely as a metaphor.

"if you don't like my fire (if you don't like what i'm doing/ who i am)
then don't come around
cause I'm gonna burn one down (I won't change for you)
yes I'm gonna burn one down"

You could even understand it has more than one 100% interpretation, and just enjoy it. No matter how you interpret it, the last thing intended by this song is fighting over anything (the meaning).

I'm with EddyO on this one.. The first interpretation makes sense for the line, but I think the rest of the song definitely suggests death. I'm still not sure who dies- it could be the speaker.

Pink Floyd – Careful with That Axe, Eugene Lyrics 19 years ago
If you use that rationale, there would be literally thousands more hits from the 60s and 70s. An average song from a good old band would be a phenominal piece of art from any current band.

That being said, if you like Neil Young, go pick up a Matt Mays CD- great stuff...

Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb Lyrics 19 years ago
thedoorsandlzrock... What?? Syd didn't have a terrible childhood, I would argue that he was not simply "crazy", and I don't recall him ever overdosing...

I think the words "Comfortably Numb" are all you need to understand to get the song. I don't think the average person has felt this way, but many have. It's just a feeling that nothing (literally, not like a depressed person crying) matters at all, and you don't mind.

I know it was not written about drugs, I don't think it's about drugs, but I can see why some people think so, drugs may make people feel "comfortably numb" for a few hours...

ptree- why wouldn't it be true lol. You are basically saying "the lyrics say this, Waters said this, but it's probably not true, it's gotta be drugs". That makes no sense.

Pink Floyd – Fat Old Sun Lyrics 19 years ago
cheeriokid- I know to people like you, drugs are a taboo subject. But to bands (especially in the 70's) and open minded people, or just people who do drugs, we realize that some songs are about drugs, and that doesn't make the song any more or less or a song. In this song, it can EASILY be interpreted as about marijuana (which is what I'm leaning towards)... Did you ever think that maybe some of the songs that initially seem like drug-related are actually drug related?!? I know there's no heroin in comfortably numb, but fat old sun could easily have weed references, and common sense, music knowledge, or any understanding about PF can't prove that suggestion wrong.

Just so you know, the idea about it being about Nick Mason is not true... The reason the camera is on him the whole time in the DVD is because that was the only shot they could find to make the director's cut...

David Bowie – Space Oddity Lyrics 19 years ago
Am I the only one who gets a bit of a Syd Barrett feeling with this? Probably because I'm big time into Floyd, and not so much Bowie, but it could be interpreted as (for example-) Syd Barrett's life...

1: Ground control being his conscious, a part of him that keeps him grounded and rational. The start is his experiments with drugs, music and generally being an eccentric person, but carefully (ground control is very cautious at the start)

2: Fame, losing some of his need to be reasonable. He steps out (not drug inhibited or anything) and just starts looking at everything from a new angle, feeling no need to be "normal".

3: For years he was not really like the average person (far above the world), but didn't let go of himself. Now he knows what he is like, and what society is like.

4: He has changed (people say Syd went insane and whatnot... however you want to look at it, he was not the same as an average person). Loses touch with reality and conforming, not so much as to forget who he really cares about, but enough that they aren't as important as before...

I'm not trying to say this is what Bowie was thinking, it's just an interpretation.

Hate to break it to you, but "Learning to Fly"... is about "learning to fly"... Dave Gilmour learning to fly a small plane...

I don't see why people who don't smoke can't appreciate this song. I'll use another Pink Floyd example for you, I've never seen a best friend descent into madness, yet Wish You Were Here is my favorite album.

It is also "a silver sound from a tongue so strange".

I usually don't say this about PF songs, but the only thing I can guess about the meaning is weed... "New mow grass smells so sweet", "roll me up an lay me down", "pick your feet up off the ground"... Now it could just be describing a lazy summer day, but theres my guess.

if you think the album, or this song in particular was made to make people's "trips" better, you should try listening to the lyrics, if you can get your head around all the big words. This whole album is obviousley a hell of a lot better than a little flashing-colored trip.

for all of you (jimps...) who think it is about Waters doing drugs, you are incorrect. I dont agree with the drugs idea at all, but youre entitled to your opinion, but it is in no way, shape or form about Roger Waters. If it relates to any band member, it is Syd, Waters was not into hard drugs.

I dont know why, but i absolutely love this song... to me, it somehow relates to a personal experience. It is talking to a person that you do not talk to often. Possibly because of different social groups, live far away, etc... Someone you really want to get to know, but somehow your paths never cross, and as time passes, it is harder and harder to talk to them.

Pink Floyd – Mother Lyrics 20 years ago
i think this song is as much about mood and feeling as lyrics. The song is so soft, much like Pink's mother's protectiveness, but beyond that, it is all building up the wall.
