Forgetting the words for the moment, this tune is haunting and beautiful. Gilmour is a musical genius.
Absolutely gorgeous song. He has a way of blending guitar sounds with his voice. Who says old farts don't have a voice...
The album seems to be abut some sort of relationship, I think this song is about spending too much time in a fantasy world, trying to avoid reality- a 'pocketful of stones' represents the earth he 's ignoring but carried with him.
Well I think this song may be about himself. David is said to be an athiest. I can certainly respect the position.
The chords changes "are" truly wonderful in this song. I think they deserve to be so, because David is writing one of his personal anthems here. (Or maybe he wrote it for me ;-)
But I do think he is contemplating the fleeting, but wonderful existence we share right here, right now on planet Earth, and not assuming much else.

Now I've changed my mind... I agree mostly with floyd336... But I'd say based on the lyrics, he's an agnostic, not an athiest.
I think this song is about a man who has never allowed anyone to ever really love him. He's always pushed away typical happiness in every shape and form. Now he's become an old man living in his own world, alone. He's starting to really hit a point of self-actualization where life is soon coming to an end and he's finally looking back on what's been left behind. The worst part of it is that he knows he'll never change.
That's what I took away from it anyhow.
Similar to what agent wrote, I think it's about a man who was always dreaming of something greater that he just couldn't have. Happiness just wasn't enough to please him, he kept waiting for something that never came to be. He's always been stoic and distant when with other people and just can't muster up any care for others lives.
It's about someone thinking they can distance themselves from a world that's falling apart around them.
I think it is reflections of a Father for his Son. He is meditating on the innocence of childhood and making a prayer that as he grows into adulthood his son will maintain as much of the purity of childhood as he can in an often impure world.
