Soul Coughing – $300 Lyrics 19 years ago
"I know the skin is a jealous skin." Parallel to "my lord" in the first verse.

"I know the sky is its competition." Consider sky for heavens of for the academic viewpoint that the Judeo-Christian god fits the paradigm of a sky god.

I'm guessing the skin is the addiction with intravenous use. The rainstorm in the first two lines of the verse may imply driving rain hitting the skin like needles - you might expect that the conditioned response for a junkie is the need for the high.

"And I need for you to be reasonable." I.e. how can I quit if the rain you pour down makes me feel the addiction and the withdrawal?

Matt Nathanson – Vandalized Lyrics 19 years ago
It's a good Matt song except for the fact that Bill Foreman wrote it. Bill drummed in various units with Matt for a while, and is a great songwriter in his own right. Rare and True, which I think has slipped out of Matt's sets, is another Foreman composition. Trace of a Cat's Eye is also a Bill song.

The Replacements – Alex Chilton Lyrics 21 years ago
Ah, Power Pop. I believe Chilton had originally been slated to produce "Pleased to Meet Me", or possibly "Tim". Big Star was pretty big to the 'Matts, and also to R.E.M. and the dB's. "September Gurls" is a decent sample of their stuff.

Morphine – Potion Lyrics 21 years ago
The double to make intimacy easier. Also, the wish that it was so easy to actually just connect with out problems/conflict/mismatched feelings.

Morphine – Super Sex Lyrics 21 years ago
Collected English from foreigners on european tours. The kind of stuff you hear on the way to the gig and around the venue. Mark took it as an idiom and strung it all together, and damn, if it isn't evocative.

Matt Nathanson – Curve Of The Earth Lyrics 21 years ago
Best song on this album, far and away. The lyrical hooks are just killer, and form such a synergistic whole. "Does he look like me at all / 'cause they're all an awful lot like you" is possibly the most succinct statement of being hung-up post breakup ever penned, or at least I think a lot of it.

Matt Nathanson – Wings Lyrics 21 years ago
Compare this one to "Curve of the earth". Maybe she's expecting to be caught but leaving him to drown, like how in "curve" she talks of having caught him but never opened her hand. Some relationships have one taking the public role of the martyr when the other is more the martyr. Just a posibility.

Matt Nathanson – Clean Lyrics 21 years ago
Not always society, sometimes people individually, like in a relationship where you have the short end of the stick. There's rebellion there, but it's a bit interesting that there isn't complete withdrawl from the conversation of the bad relationship. I don't know if that's particularly meaningful.

One of Matt's most cohesive bits of writing. While I like the CD version, I wish something a bit more in line with his live performances of that era had been documented.
