This is an awesome song. I think its awesome that a guy ((Matt)) is singing from the point of a girl. And i feel exactly how this girl is feeling.
Maybe he's not singing from the poing of a girl... maybe he's singing about what a girl said to him. This girl does, however, think highly of whoever she is speaking to because she has been through previous heartache ("Maybe you're all the same/ You say you'll never leave/ Until you're gone again/ And little pieces fall away") but she is surrounded by his love that it sweeps her away ("And I'm drowning/ You open up your wings/ And I'm gone." I think it's beautiful.
Compare this one to "Curve of the earth". Maybe she's expecting to be caught but leaving him to drown, like how in "curve" she talks of having caught him but never opened her hand. Some relationships have one taking the public role of the martyr when the other is more the martyr. Just a posibility.
I think this song is about a girl (whether it's from her POV or she saying it to him) and how she's feeling at the end of a relationship. She says that she finds herself falling a lot, which I think means she having trouble being happy and herself like the way she used to be when breath was easy, when they were together. But somehow she keeps onto the hope that one of these times when she's falling he'll be there to catch her. He'll come back to her and be her net and catch her and be there for her in her hard time just like he used to be. But of course he doesn't do that, he doesn't come back and catch her, so she's drowning in her loss and depression. I think in the second part of the song she's voicing her bitterness towards him and how he's like other men. How they all seem to promise all those pretty things like love, stability, and forever, but like the men before them they all end up leaving her in the end and she's left broken after believing in their promises. But she still wishes that he would come back to her in the end and he still doesn't.
On the album version at the very end he says, "I'm gone, say nice things about me, I'm gone"
Which, well isn't here, but is also a line from James Taylor's "Carolina on my Mind" and I was wondering if anyone thinks that that is some sort of reference or just a coincidence.
