I really don't see this song being JUST about drug addiction. Yea, it's obvious that he's talking about his dependence on drugs/alcohol, but I think the song is more about Brad trying to find a connection with somebody who's in the same situation, who can kind of share in his pain. My favorite line: "Two pints of booze Tell me, are you a badfish too?" Anyway, that's just my opinion. This is a fuckin great song no matter what it means to you. |

On the part where it sounds like he is going to say another line but but doesn't, it used to be "I don't have the patience to watch you battle every miniscule disease" but Jack thought it was too harsh, so he took it out. He also said that the song is about how with girls, there is such a big fuss over everything and how they are so particular about things. Like a woman would say something like "Oh I won't take Tylenol, it doesn't work for me," but a guy would just take and swallow whatever's handed to him. (This is all from whitestripes.net just so you don't think i'm just pulling this out my ass.) |

I was looking up "blue orchid" on google and found a bunch of articles about "The Blue Orchid Case" which was an investigation and arrest of a group of Russians involved in this worldwide child pornography ring. "blue orchid" was the name of their website. I don't completely get how the lyrics work into this but it seems like something Jack would care about because of his whole interest in childhood innocence. The "you took a white orchid and turned it blue" would make sense meaning the child is pure and these people abused them and left them 'blue' or mentally disturbed for the rest of their lives. |

Now that I've read other ppl's interpretations, I think the sex/virginity/love song meaning makes a lot of sense. Listening to it on my own, I never even thought of that. It always sounded like it was written about Kurt's death (and I'm not one of those dipshits who thinks EVERY song by NIRVANA or Foo Fighters is about his death). There's like 2 other people who thought it, too, so it's not just me. But, i don't think any of it has to do with Dave using heroin because i know he was never into that. The whole song (minus the 'she' parts) sounds like it's about Kurt Cobain: Hello I've waited here for you Everlong -I always thought that sounded like him seeing Kurt again in heaven (it sounds kinda corny, but still). When they became way too famous way too fast, it was too much to take ("in over my head"). He was mentally unstable ("out of her head"). Breath out So I can breathe you in Hold you in -Makes me think of Dave seeing Kurt's dead body and wanting him to breathe and be alive again. He wants to be with him again. And now I know you've always been Out of your head, out of my head, I sang -(Even though I know Kurt Cobain didn't kill himself) I think Dave realized how many problems Kurt had and how much he suffered during his lifetime. He was "out of his head" and Dave, realizing this, goes "out of his head" as it hits him that he will never see his friend again. |

yea i think a few ppl already said this but the song is definitely about suicide + mass homicide; taking everybody down with you. basically a suicide bombing which wasn't something people really talked about then. but think about how fuckin hilarious it would be if this song were released like now, after 9-11. people would freak haha. I also love the way that, until u really pay attention to the lyrics, this just seems like a nice little song because its so upbeat. green day has always had a way of doing that. this song is like the perfect example. |

They dragged this this one for a while n billie joe was messin with the crowd while mike n tre kept loopin that riff it was fuckin beautiful! i agree, awesome song. the verses kick ass, but chorus is really shitty. i can't believe im the first one to say that but, hey, maybe it's just me. also, i know this song is just for fun and doesn't really call for interpretation but did anybody else notice that the 3 verses kinda go in the order of life? Like the first verse is kinda of like being a kid and whining about scrapes and knotty hair. Then the second one says "Makes you sick, makes you ill, makes you cheat" like its about being stupid getting horribly drunk as a teenager. And then the last verse is like adulthood n getting married and divorced n stuff. But again, maybe it's just me. |
