This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

yea i think a few ppl already said this but the song is definitely about suicide + mass homicide; taking everybody down with you. basically a suicide bombing which wasn't something people really talked about then. but think about how fuckin hilarious it would be if this song were released like now, after 9-11. people would freak haha.
I also love the way that, until u really pay attention to the lyrics, this just seems like a nice little song because its so upbeat. green day has always had a way of doing that. this song is like the perfect example.
