VNV Nation – Carry You Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think this song is meant to push any specific religious or spiritual meaning; it's sort of one-size-fits-all, and I like that Ronan sings "universe" in the chorus instead of mentioning a deity.

If you interpret "Illusion" as a plea to someone not to commit suicide, this song seems to be an extension of that - explaining that it isn't as hard to stay as the person might think.

What I love most about "Carry You" is that the lyrics are comforting while at the same time acknowledging that life is painful. It doesn't try to provide easy answers or say that everything is ok.

Darling Violetta – I Want To Kill You Lyrics 16 years ago
The Wikipedia entry for Darling Violetta says this song could be about a "ghoul missing her vampiric master". I don't know anything about the Masquerade Universe; maybe it means something in that context...

Peter Gabriel – Red Rain Lyrics 16 years ago
Tori Amos did a live cover of this song - it's very beautiful and haunting. I think it might be about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Fallout is is often referred to as rain in songs about nuclear war (a lot of Sisters of Mercy songs), and the lines "the ground is still warm to touch", "this place is so quiet" and "they tell you that this rain can sting" seem to reinforce this idea.

Maybe this song is from the perspective of a survivor, or someone's experience visiting those places and acknowledging the devestation that occured.

Tristania – Cure Lyrics 17 years ago
Actually tonedeaf, i think it takes a *hell* of a lot of backbone for a woman to publicly identify as a submissive, given the stigma and discrimination against subs that you've just illustrated.

Tristania – Cure Lyrics 17 years ago
As a submissive, i can really relate to this song. When i am being dominated, i have a sense that i would be content to kneel there forever - that my Dom *is* the entire world... the past is forgotten. The line "your words are shivers down my spine" is so perfect - that's how it feels for me.
i don't know if this is what the lyricist intended the song to mean, it's just what it conveys to me.
It also reminds me somewhat of "In Your Room" by Depeche Mode -
"In your room, where souls disappear
only you exist here"
and
"I'm hanging on your words
living on your breath
feeling with your skin
Will I always be here?"

The Cranberries – Zombie Lyrics 19 years ago
Someone made a comment earlier about "shellshock", which is know known as PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
The symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks of the traumatic event/s ("In your head, in your
head they are fighting"), emotional numbness or dissociation (the title and the line " the violence caused such silence") and detachment from others (the song seems to be from the perspective of someone trying to understand what's going on in the "zombie's" head and trying to get through to them).
This song shows the damage war can do to individuals, and those that care about them (the family members of those suffering from PTSD tend to exhibit many of the same symptoms, though to a lesser extent). By focusing on an individual rather than everyone affected by the horrors of war, the lyricist is reminding listeners of the personal stories hidden behind statistics.

Loreena McKennitt – Samian Night Lyrics 19 years ago
The correct spelling is "Samhain". It's pronounced "sow-ane" and is the Pagan version of Halloween.

KoЯn – Beat It Upright Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm not a korn fan, they're a bit too mainstream for my tastes and I find deliberate misspelling irritating, but I always enjoy songs with BDSM content. I just wish the singer could make up his mind about whether he is dominant or submissive. This seems to happen in a lot of songs on kinky themes, for example London After Midnight's "The Bondage Song". He started out as the Master, and then started singing "take me to bed and rip me apart".

Tori Amos – Blood Roses Lyrics 19 years ago
In the LGBT community, young gay men are sometimes called "chickens", and those who are attracted to them (mostly older men)are "chickenhawks".

The lines "chickens get a taste of your meat" and "when he sucks you deep, sometimes your nothing but meat" could be references to oral sex.

I think this song is about a guy who is being objectified by younger men and doesn't realise it.

Tori Amos – Never Seen Blue Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm not sure about the meaning of the whole song, but "got a little red line that tells you, boy where the razor's been" sounds like a reference to self-injury.

The Green Man is a Wiccan deity who represents fertility and dies in Winter, to be reborn in Spring.

Tapping The Vein – Butterfly Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with macrob's comment- it definitely sounds like the thoughts of someone who was sexually abused. Feelings of dissociation (separating oneself from what is happening) are common during trauma. Also, the reference to a bloodstained bed is fairly self-explanatory.
