I did not feel fear from this song. I felt surprise at his screams, how deep and full they are, how he must have experienced a lot of pain in his life to make those sounds. They pummel and awaken. They were so incredibly human, more human than most will ever be able to be, not inhumane at all. |

I think this is the closest to an anarchist song he has. He could rebel towards injustice in the government and feel anger and fear, or he can find his inner peace and light with his brethren. |

This seems to be Sufjan speaking to Jesus. Jesus is writing through Sufjan, and when he writes a poem, Sufjan knows it first and then when he is writing it, Jesus is taking his hand and putting it to the paper. Sufjan wears His clothes and shoes, which are a garment of light to walk through this world and his feet on the right path. When the bridegroom comes, Sufjan will have found the right woman who also has faith, and they will marry... Just my interp :) |

this song makes me rock and tingle and feel all sorts of deep shit. i think it's about the clarity people live life with once they've refused to be lost souls and be free as gods on earth. |

nothing but god in the way of itself
we are lord

trying to get out of the way of itself" |

he has this evil, heaviness, chaotic karma-- whatever name you like-- that drives him as the day wears into the isolation of night; once he wakes in the morning he has been cleansed of those energies and simply bathes in positivity and open morality. in a cycle like that. it's about our society and how hard it is to live in it without succumbing to a lower nature. |

something about the level of defensive protection we need to enforce ad infinitum in such brash environments. doesn't seem condemning, only acknowledging of the armor of this life. |

the song is also about gender. often in a typical monogamous heterosexual relationship the man and the woman form these subtle roles that restrain the true self. & a many people, women especially, stay in bad relationships because society makes them feel bad for being single, and we're taught these beauty and the beast love stories that make you want to hold on to the wrong people. or it's about how people who cheat on their lovers might just not be meant for monogamy. the song seems to be against feeling indebted to one other human being in such a way that it stunts your growth and makes you shortsighted... which happens to many in relationships and marriages. |
