Audioslave – Doesn't Remind Me Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song is about a person going through that initial tragedy that turns them away from what they find or know sacred. They find release, catharsis in thing that have no relation to that tragedy. Gospel music, canned applause, looking at random faces in the parking lot, these things have little association to that tragedy. Eventually, we change, we regress, we mature, we digress, we aren't the same as before, and we look at the tragedy with different eyes and we find ourselves craving that sacred aspect once more. That's what the bridge is about I think. It's a life coming full circle sort of thing, I think.

Just a badass tune. Just discovered it by accident, like many other songs I've found. One of the best long songs I've heard in a long while.

Fleetwood Mac – World Turning Lyrics 13 years ago
The song is simple and so is the playing. The same few chords are being repeated throughout except here and there (during the interlude in the middle), but the overall rhythm remains. I became hooked on this song after watching the band play it live. It's also distinct because Stevie Nicks' voice is not the dominant one throughout the song. To me, it's not the typical Fleetwood Mac song. I could be wrong, but I love this song just the same.

The Tragically Hip – Gift Shop Lyrics 13 years ago
After watching this video a number of times, I can't help but see this song as an unintended memorial toward 9/11. It came out five years before that, but the video for the song shows a few shots of the Twin Towers in all their glory. Maybe I'm drawing the wrong conclusion here, but I just happen to see it that way at this moment.

Cake – Nugget Lyrics 13 years ago
Reading these comments, I reiterate the point I made about Cake's music a few summers ago. The aim of their music, in my opinion, is to show that humankind is a depressing life form that does nothing more than bow to the whims of their biological urges and since we are incapable of growing beyond them we need to be destroyed. Sounds high and might and all Christian-y I know, but how else would a person describe the aim of Cake's music? The songs are flagrantly intellectual and cryptic to no end, and it takes some serious minds to unweave the underlying meanings. That my opinion anyway.

And I still love Cake now as I did back then.

No matter the message, It's a catchy, memorable song!

Ben Folds Five – Battle of Who Could Care Less Lyrics 14 years ago
I can't describe how this works, but I know I like it. Folds is a master songwriter and it shows here. This is my favorite song by them. Besides the lyricism, the piano, bass guitar, drums and harmonies flow so well. It's another example of sonic awesomeness, just great stuff all around.

Whatever the answer, they are an awesome band. I love this song!

Thanks folkfan...

That's a good point. When I said "western monotheisms", I was referring to the big three on the current world stage. I agree that the cultures that contributed to Western Civilization like the Greek, Romans, Persians, et al. had multiple pantheons. I even heard that YHWH could have been a member of Canaanite pantheon, a war god in fact. Who really knows I guess, but I do agree with you on the whole.

Eagles – Lyin' Eyes Lyrics 14 years ago
According to the liner on the 2003 Very Best Of The Eagles collection, Glenn Fry said he wished he still had the legal pad that had the lyrics for this song. Supposedly they still had verses they could have used. Apparently this was one of the few songs that the members of the Eagles worked on where there was too much material to work with. It all came so easily. Many of their other songs took a lot of mojo to finish.

Eagles – Midnight Flyer Lyrics 14 years ago
Awesome song. It's not Hotel California. It's not Take It Easy. It's not Tequila Sunrise either, but this lesser known selection in the Eagles catalog really merits a listen or two.

Donovan – Season of the Witch Lyrics 14 years ago
Very acid-like. I'm sure people have tripped out to it. I hear this song, and it's like I hear this voice that reminds me of early Led Zeppelin. Donovan's vocal are almost like Robert Plant's in a way.

I may be wrong, but this song is beautiful. Love it much.

Puff Daddy – Come With Me (feat. Jimmy Page) Lyrics 14 years ago
This song sucks in many ways, but I love listening to it.

The lyrics are shameful, the performance lackluster, and the production is truly mass-produced.

And yet, I'd listen to it over and over again.

It's like a creation by Limp Bizket, Good Charlotte or Insane Clown Posse.

You'd never admit listening to such music out loud to your friends or family, but you jam to it in the comfort of privacy.

Whatever the historical legacy of this song, I'll listen to it.

The White Stripes – Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground Lyrics 14 years ago
Found this song by accident on YouTube. Never heard it before, and now I like it much. I think Jack White is one of the best lyricists in recent years and I think his best songs are the ones where the meaning is somewhat straightforward. The character in question is longing for his former lover and he seems to be drowning in it. The lyrics are simple and the guitar licks are thundering at just the right moments, like when a man is seething just long enough before he explodes. This is the sentiment of the song to me, a man on the verge because his lover has somehow been removed from the picture.

Jack White has always been good at evoking human sentiment.

Tom Petty – Saving Grace Lyrics 14 years ago
Whatever the real meaning, Petty penned a late-career classic I think. I am amazed at the man's stamina. Pushing 60, and can rock out like guys a third of age, he's like Springsteen in that regard. Either way, Petty a classic rock star and he proves it with this song. It may be about a man's late-life thoughts on religion and humankind, it may be about remembering those singular life experiences that left the greatest impact on one's own life, it may even be gibberish strung together to both look and sound deep while the artist chuckles at his own fanbase for being a little too pretentious. No matter how one slices it, this is an awesome song and Tom Petty is an American treasure.

Natasha Bedingfield – Silent Movie Lyrics 14 years ago
The metaphor of a failing relationship as a silent movie is brilliant. When the communication goes, all you have left is this feeling that your significant other is just a roommate and a person that never leaves. Too bad this song didn't run up the pop charts, because this is one of the few pop songs in recent memory that I've actually liked. Well, I guess the unplucked gems are the ones that are left behind for the real fans.

Tool – The Grudge Lyrics 14 years ago
In the last year or so, I came around with Tool. I used to hate them, but they are now one of my favorite bands. This song, while heavy and discordant at first, evokes a strong sense of esoteric mysticism. I am not an expert on the themes that the band Tool delves into, but I know that I like their sound, their lyrics, and their image. They are a truly awesome act.

The Grudge is one of their best songs.

Godsmack – Serenity Lyrics 14 years ago
It's been awhile since I've really listened to this song...and even in my dipshit days (which may even be the period of time I'm living in now), I really liked this song. Despite the stupid joke, I have liked Godsmack and I have a lot of respect for Sully Erna and his fellow musicians. They are a great group regardless of what a dipshit like me thinks.

Awesome song, awesome band!

AFI – Miss Murder Lyrics 14 years ago
I had a slight change of heart about this song. I wrote some rather nasty comments about it a few years ago.

And then I played Guitar Hero.

I guess if one lets the irrational hatred simmer and fizzle out, then the artistry really comes out.

It's not my favorite song, but it's catchy and fun to play.

Jack Johnson – Sleep Through the Static Lyrics 14 years ago
I have been a fan of Jack's music for some time. I purchased four CD's of music and as I listened to them, I noticed a specific theme to his work. He is that singer-songwriter vein of old. I hear the anti-war in this song and it parallels other songs like "Times Like These", "Cookie Jar" and "Good People". Jack, I think, sees humanity as basically good as his catalogue of music is not completely depressing. I think he sees humankind as capable of doing great acts of good as well as evil. That's at least how I see Jack Johnson's music. This particular song is a great example of his prowess with words.

The Black Keys – Hold Me in Your Arms Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a perfect song...the lyrics are simple and the licks are dead on. It's pitch-fucking-perfect, without a doubt. I love blues songs because they can emote so much without falling into that pithy emo category, which is known for its overlong and sappy renditions of what love should be about. This song best describes what love (at least the romantic part) should be. Powerful, pointed, and hits right to the heart.

The Black Keys – Thickfreakness Lyrics 15 years ago
Come to think of it, a lot of old and new blues tunes are relatively straightforward in their meaning and backed up with a mesmerizing score. I read a biography on the band and their styles has been called "blues-rock" and I think it's a good choice. The lyrics are emotional and not subtle, and neither are the chords they play. It's loud and raw and it screams "hey look at me". The Black Keys play music for that kind of human heart, at least my opinion.

They are an awesome duo, as is this song.

George Harrison – My Sweet Lord Lyrics 15 years ago
I watched a rather mind-numbing "documentary" about how this song veils itself as purely Christian at first and then deceives the listener into chanting "Hare Krishna" among others. Even then, I was laughing my ass off at how insipid the implication was. As far as I know, Christian music uses the same tricks to get the listener to start singing about Jesus and His Glory. Whatever, it's just music. Enjoy it before you become one with the Earth.

I've gotten onto 311 lately, and this is one of the best songs I've ever heard by them beside "All Mixed Up". They are just so smooth, so poetic. There is enough rock to make my head bounce and enough ska to make my head sway back and forth. It's rather sad I didn't hear this song earlier. It's pure gold, like the heart of the guy being described here.

Little Big Town – Boondocks Lyrics 15 years ago
Where exactly are the boondocks? Wherever you place your heart I guess. The boondocks are everywhere I guess.

In terms of modern country, this is one of the better songs I've heard. After rebelling for the longest time from the first kind of music I've ever heard, this maybe one of the songs that helped me reembrace the genre that I hated for so long.

Thank goodness for good music in a time of schlock.
