a beautiful song, and yes i agree that she feels as if she has been destroyed by a relationship. she cannot be freed from the idea of the relationship or her lover, she can't "escape the lion's jaw." i think that the imagery of presenting mt. saint helens shows how monumental this relationship/lover is to mirah. she and her lover were "humbled" by the mountain, as if it made them feel insignificant. so much is going on in the world around her, there is destruction everywhere, not just in her heart. |

there is definitely a relationship coming to an end in this song, and i think matt pond is searching for the future for this couple... it seems like they have stayed together for so long just out of fear of breaking up, it feels like one of those relationships that the future is really unclear.. "will they be happy to stand alone?" will they get back together? i also love the imagery of the "biggest rooms"-- after the lonliness of the separation or the relationship coming to an end, he tries to drown the lonliness or whatever feeling by surrounding himself with people, but everything just goes wrong. the words and the music in this song are so beautiful. its so short and simple, but definitely one of matt pond's best songs. |

haha i love the comment above me. although i doubt that there is significance. i may be 100% wrong though. anyway. i love love love this song. the part that really speaks to me is "i've betrayed the whole concept of ground right there for standing understand though i can't see what's sound got branches waving" i think matt pond is talking about hitting that point in life where one begins to question everything that they hold on to for support and the idea of solid ground fades away. the idea of the branches waving make me think of being fickle and living for fleeting moments. the idea is scary but beautiful. |

no matter what the song is about, elliott smith has an amazing voice and sings beautifully. but i think both sides have a good argument, id say that it makes sense that it is the alcohol talking to the girl as elliot sees it.
