| As others have mentioned, the song is focused on touching upon societal issues, but I think it is a beautiful song about communication and a call to resolve things with peace. That message I think can translate to any situation, be it geopolitical tension, or even tension within your own relationships, the need for understanding and avoiding "going to war with each other" still holds true. It benefits none, and only causes more suffering. | |

The song on the whole is obviously a song about loss, not necessarily romantic, but the lyrics are general enough that anybody that you love, be it family, friends, etc, can relate. In my case, it resonates a lot with the loss of my girlfriend, now ex, of 3.5 years. Despite the issues we faced, there was a lot of corrective action and effort on my part to make it work, maybe too late, but thats what I resonate with the most in this song, when Collins sings "like morning dreams they just disappear like dust in your hand falling to the floor how can life ever be the same", and I think with any type of heartbreak, life really never is the same. It will be different, it has to be. I think especially when the heartbreak is unexpected, it amazes the person how many things you subconsciously plan are no longer possible. Like that, the next morning, you wake up you realize that you will never see those things come to fruition. It is a VERY bitter pill to swallow. |

DeMarco sings of a guy who engaged himself with another woman that was not his partner, either attention-wise or affair, but either way, it seems to have caused his partner much pain. "Never thought some silly songs could ever go and hurt someone I never meant to sing my tune for anybody else out there but you". Whether it is true naïveté, or not, the lack of foresight at times can cause the people we love a lot of pain, whether we intend to or not. I've found myself in similar shoes to the singer before. It is a terrible feeling, and I think the regret is felt after you step back and realize your mistakes. DeMarco sings in a longing way, almost trying to console the woman, that he suffered too, and that he still loves her, even if she never hears his message. |
