Vola – Cannibal Lyrics 7 months ago
To me, the lyrics are about humanity turning a blind eye to our own destructive nature. We willingly destroy the planet that gives us life, dooming countless species to extinction, even to ourselves. We also willingly destroy fellow humans with man-made inventions like fentanyl.

@[King:52860] Nothing "London Bridge" is not about the bubonic plague. It's about the deterioration of the London Bridge. "Ring around the Rosie" is about the plague.

Zeal & Ardor – Come on Down Lyrics 1 year ago
This whole album is a concept album exploring what would have happened if enslaved African-Americans had embraced Satanism instead of Christianity. There are a couple of plays on words in these lyrics.

The scene is a family of slaves standing in a field, probably cotton, but it could be tobacco. The "devil" mentioned is their master (white devil), who is inside his house (not in the field) with his family, and the house has been set on fire by the slaves in an act of revolt/retribution. The narrator is also stating that his family members in the field are not devils (evil), even though they have killed several people, since the murders are seen as justified.

"Papa's many seeds" are the narrator's family members, but also references the crop seeds sown by the slaves.

He is saying "come on down" because he knows that "they'll take me away" for the murders and execute him, then he will go down to Hell.

Slayer – Mandatory Suicide Lyrics 1 year ago
"Mandatory suicide" is a euphemism for the draft that the US government implemented during the Vietnam conflict. The child's toy is an allusion to the booby traps that the enemy would use (e.g., toys, piles of animal dung, cans of soda/beer).

"Spikes impale you as you're forced off the crest" describes the spring-loaded traps that were used, typically tied to a tripwire. These would be tied to trees in the jungle canopy and would swing down, impaling a soldier.

The enemy very effectively used psychological warfare during Vietnam. The use of traps and other hidden dangers messed with the minds of soldiers.

Gojira – Amazonia Lyrics 3 years ago
This one is rather obvious, but the cause is not as well-known. In order to satiate Americans\' gluttony, the Amazon is being slashed and burned to pave the way for grazing pastures to raise beef. If you look at the packaging of a beef product, the country of origin is typically in South America.\n\nI am not vegan, or even a vegetarian, so I am not advocating abstinence from meat, but please be aware of the impact of what you are eating. If you must eat beef, try to limit your intake to locally-raised, humanely-treated, grass-fed cattle. It may cost more, but it is healthier for you and the planet.\n\nTangentially related: one of the best things you can do for this planet is to stop eating seafood. The seafood industry is destroying our oceans. This destruction is causing dramatic negative impacts on climate and biodiversity. For more information, do some reading on how seafood is harvested and the amount of plastic that is dumped in the ocean as a result of this harvest. The amount of bycatch alone is very depressing: about 5 pounds of bycatch (sea turtles, sharks, dolphins, etc.) are killed for every 1 pound of seafood that goes to the market.

Gojira – Born for One Thing Lyrics 3 years ago
Terror Management Theory. "The greatest fear of all" and "the primal fear of disappearing" are referencing the fear of dying. Humans are unique in that we are one of the few (if not the only) species capable of the awareness of our own mortality. This has strong implications that are not necessarily obvious.\n\nWe tame this fear by creating the illusion of immortality. Even though our earthly bodies may decompose and disappear, we can continue living after death by participating in activities that will continue after we die.\n\nThe reasoning behind religion (belief in an afterlife), political views, self-esteem, sports teams affiliations, hedonism, etc. can all be explained by Terror Management Theory.\n\nJust about everything that we do is to hide/tame the greatest fear of all.
