I think that the singer is toying with the idea of suicide in a very playful manner. He wouldn't actually do it, but what if? To me, that's the gist of the song. Life can be unbearable sometimes. More often than not, it seems that everything that's ever been good and beautiful is going to hell. Sometimes it seems that there is no way out, no chance of improvement, no light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes we are impotent, incapable of improving our situation. But hey, what if I just killed myself? It's can be a calming thought to always have a way out. To summarize: The singer's life is going to hell. He toys with the idea of suicide to alleviate his suffering. Of course Elton sings about a teenager and this is probably a play on the public's view on teenage suicide/teenagers who think their life is hard when it's really not. But I just listen to this song when I'm in a really bad place. Not to romanticize suicide, but to turn a depressing thought into something jolly and uplifting. |

To summarize: A man wants to get some rest in a diner on a rainy day. He sits down and the waiter only fills his coffee halfway. Before he can say anything, the waiter greets a young, beautiful women. They start talking. Our singer is left with his thoughts and half a cup of coffee. He looks out the window and reads the paper. Some actor he never heard of died. He reminisces about a time "before the rain began". He leaves, he needs to catch a train. My interpretation: The singer is dissatisfied with his life. While the waiter fucks him over by only filling his cup halfway, he goes to talk to the pretty woman. The pretty people enjoy their bliss and the singer is left with his thoughts. Everyone lives their happy life and our singer is disgusted by that. While everyone else's life has color, his is grey and black. But even though everyone else goes on to live the 'good life', our dreary singer goes on to read about the depressing truths of life, remembering better times and leaving to catch his train. He lives his bitter life, and the world goes on. Trains need to be caught, suicides must be investigated. While everyone's life seems to be nothing but flowers and sunshine, he sits 'inside the diner', trapped with his dark thoughts, not an active participant in other people's lives, but an observer. Everyone stands in the sunshine, and he looks out at the rainy streets of reality. |

Roland could very well be a dog! He's a polish breed and has "sixteen knives". Dogs naturally have 18 claws, but the 2 dewclaws are usually removed by vets. So he has 16 claws. It is/was a long haired dog, hence the "beard". He always took the time to "talk to me". I figure he barked a lot. He was growing on him. The singer had to either get rid of him or he died. He was his best friend. "They caught him with his case in a public place" Maybe they caught him hurting a human wizh his "knives". We know he liked to "sever segments". He may have hurt an animal or human. |

The main character of this song is being executed. They're with someone else. Maybe they really have committed these "crimes", or they're just labeled as crimes by society. After all the years they lived, they don't just want to be remembered as perpetrators, no matter how horrible their crimes may have been. It's a last cry for forgiveness. The song makes me think of "I am legend" by Richard Matheson. |

She's lost and disturbed. She's searching for something, just like everyone is. She's just "swaying" into the room. 1) Maybe that means she's so overwhelmed that the only thing left to do is to not care about anything and do as she pleases. 2) Or she was going through a rough time and now learns to take it easy and not be hard on herself. This song really speaks to me. It's like a big relief. The light at the end of the tunnel. When the world falls apart, just sway into the room and the world will not seem so bleak anymore. |
