They had something beautiful, passionate, real. But he threw her away to chase something the world told him was supposed to come first. He can see what he's done, but he can't stop the fire he started from destroying what they had. And he won't stop to put out the flames because he's busy looking for the thing the world told him he needed to go after instead. Speaking from personal experience. Thank you for creating this beautiful tragedy that resonates the pain I feel inside.

I think it's about a guy kicking himself for being the cause of a painful heartbreak
I get the feeling he felt the relationship was perfect and got caught up in something he himself only gained anything from, gambling, cheating, addiction...etc
after realizing he sabotaged his true love and carelessly lost the one chance he had to share a life together, he know feels anything in the days to come is hopeless because he had her!, everything he ever dreamed of! He had it right there , hand in hand and he let it all slip away over something meaningless that meant nothing to him

I think it's a song about addiction and maybe relapse.
Possibly a person letting down / pushing away loved one(s) due to use.
