Moe. – Time Ed Lyrics 5 years ago
"Time Ed" is supposedly a song about having an imaginary friend as a securitiy blanket throughout life, though the lyrics may seem somewhat nonsensical. Note that the song, or at least parts of the song (maybe the vocals), were recorded out on the street, thus explaining the various truck noises on the album version. Since the lyrics to "Time Ed" probably change more frequently in concert than just about any other song, the album version was used when transcribing.

Moe. – The Ghost Of Ralph's Mom Lyrics 5 years ago
Ralph was the band members' landlord when they all shared a place in Albany. The deal with his mom is that she's dead. Ralph eventually got booted from his house (and marriage) and moved into the garage of the place the band lived in. They got back from being away and he was all moved in. So the story goes, he was often naked and had a propensity to drink beers that weren't his. The house he owned was haunted - undoubtedly by the ghost of his mom.

Moe. – Waiting For the Punchline Lyrics 5 years ago
"Waiting For The Punchline" is essentially a commentary on the inherently evil nature of the record industry. I became aware of the connotations of the tune thanks to an insightful interpretation of the lyrics by none other than Jesse Jarnow. I think he truly touches on the essence of the tune in his analysis. I know, from a personal standpoint, the following commentary convinced me that the more recent bluegrass reformation of the song just doesn't work to capture what the tune is about. Anyway, thanks again to Jesse Jarnow...

At the debut of this tune during High Sierra 1997, Al (I think) announced that the tune was about the band's ongoing dealings with record companies in general. There's another little speech that might nice to transcribe for MOE.TUNES (I'm currently in the process of getting these tapes and accomplishing this).

My interpretation of the tune always had to do with the band's disullusionment with record companies. Are they really necessary? Is moe.'s life better because they signed? Hence the line, "And if I waited/Would my life be such a crying shame?"). The chorus, I think, has to do with the hope that someone will let moe. in on the joke of record companies. A paraphrase, "This is a joke, this has to be a joke. Somebody tell me this a joke. This is a joke, right?" in regards to the utter silliness of the music industry. FWIW, I've been corresponding with Cory, whose .SIG quote is from Robert Fripp of King Crimson: "The history of the music industry is a history of exploitation and theft."

I'm not sure what the signifigance of "seven days" is, other than, maybe, it's a symbol of time. "Okay, we've been here a while...you can let us in on the joke now."

As far as the preacher thing goes, I wasn't kidding before when I paraphrased the chorus as, "Wait a minute, I know who you are...you're Satan!" Basically, the lyrics are saying that the record industry, personified as a person, is the kind of person your mother warned you about: "My daddy told me about the likes of you/My mama told me about the likes of you/My preacher told me about the likes of you/And I tried to tell myself about the likes of you." Ditto for the end of the tune: "My mama told me...My daddy told me...Preacher told me...Peter Jennings told me." Just different sources for being warned against Satan, as it were.

Jesse later broadened his interpretation of the lyrics...

Reading this over, I don't think that I stressed enough that, even though the record industry is what the song may be *about*, it doesn't mean that it's the only interpretation of the tune. In fact, I think the power of the Punchline lyrics is that they're direct enough to specifically address a situation, but open-ended enough to not specify the situation itself.

Obviously, I haven't ever been directly fucked in the ass by the record industry (unless you count TicketBastard), but that doesn't mean that I can't relate to the tune. I have been in *so* many situations where I have felt the exact sentiment conveyed in the tune. All through high school, for example, I felt I was waiting for the punchline. My relationship with the administration of my high school seems something similar to the chorus of the tune. I've been in relationships with people that I feel have been in a similar fashion.

The moth of "Moth" was stuck in a screen door in Al's Oneonta College home on Depew Street. Al found the moth after an all-night keg party, which might explain the drinking references in the lyrics. Big thanks to Melissa Rosenberg for this information.

Moe. – Bullet Lyrics 5 years ago
* - From the debut of this song till the end of 2002 (7/2001 -> 12/2002) this song had yet to be named. As a temporary name, moeLinks named it That Chuck Tune... a common name that circulated through the fans was "Assfinger" - due to some onstage banter and events of July 2001. Neither seemed to take with the band, and when the tracklist for Wormwood was released, we saw that it had been named (finally) Bullet.

Moe. – Again and Again Lyrics 5 years ago
Al:

This song was a tune that I'd been playing over and over again at home. Invariably, every time I picked up the guitar, I'd end up playing this song. The lyrics came much later, after the band had worked up the song and tried it on, so to speak. The one line, 'time gets around in my head - I don't want to feel it' was the only thing I had to work with for quite a while. In fact, this was one of those songs where the lyrics were completed just minutes before the recording. Since I recently turned the corner at 30, I decided to make this an updated version of "Time Again," a song I had written about growing old at the age of 25. It's not an obsession with age, but more of a fascination with time and perspective - and getting bald and fatter.

Moe. – Big World Lyrics 5 years ago
Al:

We started working out the music to "Big World" before the '97 fall tour, so you may have heard bits and pieces of it come up in other songs or solos. The lyrics came on their own much later. I simply kept singing the song over and over and the lyrics came into their own. In 1997, I had the good fortune of locating my biological parents for the first time. The experience deserves more time and space than liner notes can allow for, but suffice it to say that it was surreal, unfathomable, and above all a positive experience for everyone involved. This song is simply a snapshot of that moment of realization - somewhere between the switch and the light bulb.

Moe. – Letter Home Lyrics 5 years ago
Al:

"Letter Home" is just that - a letter home from our recent year on the road, 1997. Each verse is a page from each tour, each season. The song had given us some trouble for awhile, as evidenced by the various incarnations you may have heard since its inception. It went from being a simple country song to include an extended bridge with an odd-metered world beat extravaganza, and even became a reggae song at one point, before coming full circle and becoming the song it always was - a simple country song. And it wasn't until the end of our fall '97 tour, as we were returning home, that the song also 'returned home.' Life vs. art? Let's call it a draw.

Moe. – It Lyrics 5 years ago
Chuck:

"It" was a thorn in our collective side ever since "It" was born. From writing to performing, to pre-producing, tracking and even mixing. "It" was a constant source of aggravation. I hope that "It" was worth it all, just to get across the idea tha tjunk or everday stuff can get a 'soul' from being trashed, used, loved on, obsessed over and recycled towards a different state. 6.5 for pomposity. I can't help it. I love the singing in the choruses, however - sometimes you CAN polish a turd. Thanks a lot to John Alagia for being so patient.

Moe. – Queen of the Rodeo Lyrics 5 years ago
Al wrote Queen of the Rodeo based on an incident that happened at the Wetlands around the time MOE. began playing the Wetlands in early 1994. The question at hand, of course, is what is it about a small, uncomfortable club in lower Manhattan that can possibly draw thoughts of the rodeo?

"Queen Of The Rodeo" is a part of the Timmy Rock Opera, which has performed in its entirety only twice, both at Wetlands, in celebration. The first on 2/18/95, for the Wetlands Birthday Bash. The second on 4/10/00, for the CD Release Party of "L".

Moe. – Head Lyrics 5 years ago
Al:

"Head" is another tune that was written during the mixing of NO DOY. I actually came up with the main riff one night after everyone had gone home. I was playing my guitar very loudly with all sorts of abandon, as boys will often do. I wasn't sure if everyone would like it, or if it would even be appropriate as a MOE. tune. We all did in fact like it and spend some time coming up with the meat of the song. The idea for the subject matter was to write a song that could be about any and all things pertaining to the title. Sort of a random 'Head Study #9' or "Still Life With Head' so to speak.
