The song is about a man wanting to throw everything away and become "a loser" He wants to live an unsustainable lifestyle, sleep during the day, get high, drunk, gambling, have sex with prostitutes at night. Dreaming of learning the saxophone and playing at a high level is never going to happen because it takes years of discipline. Yet, he wants a grandiose title like the football team that never won; the Crimson Tide. If they can have a name which invokes a blood red unstoppable force, he should be able to have a name that invokes a title and attitude "Deacon Blues"

"And to think you've got a grip...your lips go flappity flap" They act like they have a grip on life but their job is talking. "I'm on stage it's all an act" the bullshit persona. "I might fall back on the abstract" propaganda is abstract ideas not reality. "If you're to be the roaming eye" A journalist more specifically, someone scrutinizing. "Pry it open...why it sees, the harsh realities" The fact that bad news and negativity are forefront in news and commentary. They do it for ratings. |

My late uncle was friends with Billy Talbot. So, I know from a good source...
There's a reason Young refused to play "Cinnamon Girl" for 3 years and replaced it with "Needle and the Damage Done" Young has said it's about this girl, then someone else, and then a completely different girl. That's because it was written before Danny Witten became a full blown junkie and before heroin ravaged his band. But it's extremely obvious when looking at the lyrics.
Young sings about the early "honeymoon" stage of drug addiction. "I could be happy the rest of my life with a cinnamon girl" cinnamon is the color of heroin.
HE is alone, "a dreamer of pictures, I run in the night"(getting dope) after he's high he's "chasing the moonlight with his Cinnamon Girl"
"10 silver saxes, a bass with a bow, the drummer relaxes and waits between shows for his cinnamon girl" He's talking about a jazz drummer waiting for his fix.
"Pa send me money now, I've got to make it somehow, I need another chance. You see, YOUR baby loves to dance" He's hitting his dad up because he needs heroin and "dance" is a metaphor for using.
At the end of the song, the music turns very dark and ominous with good reason. |

I think it's literally about their logistical difficulties playing shows/popularity in these two countries and overcoming that. When you look at the lyrics it makes the most sense. |
