Exactly Where I'm At Lyrics

Let's begin with the past in front
And all the things that you really don't
Care about now
You'd be exactly where I'm at
And to think
You've got a grip, well
Look at yourself
Your lips are like two flabs of fat
They go front and back and
Flappidy flappidy flap

I'm all staged
It's all an act
I'm really scared that I may fall back
On the abstract
It'd be exactly where I'm at

If you're to be
The roaming eye, well
Pry it open and let me tell you
Why it sees
The harsh realities

So let's begin with the past in front
And all the things that you really don't
Care about now
You'd be exactly where I'm at

It's hard to say definitively what most Ween songs are about. But this one I don't think is about drugs at all. To me it's about establishing a relationship with someone(probably a woman) and he's trying to explain himself up front. Or feels like he has to. To quell whatever concerns she might have about who he is and whether he's good for her. But it's difficult to talk that way when you're just getting to know someone, on such a deep level.

"let's begin with the past in front and all the things that you really don't care about". That line sounds like he thinks he has to explain himself.

"and to think you've got a grip, well look at yourself..." He's questioning how sane or normal she is in return.

"I'm all staged. It's all an act...", as if he's not sure how stable he is either, "and I'm really scared that I may fall back on the abstract".

And lastly, "if you're to be the roaming eye, well pry it open and let me tell you why it sees the harsh realities". He's wants to explain himself on a deep level that she probably isn't used to.

If you've ever began getting involved with a woman who starts out not feeling sure whether she's safe with or can trust you... this song jives very, very well. How frustrating it can be to try to prove yourself, when the very act of speaking so abstractly is why she doesn't get you in the 1st place. Almost line for line.

I'm not sure, but this sounds to me like some kind of psychodelic trip. When people go on trips on shrooms, mescaline, LSD, or whatever, they often stop caring about the things that they used to. The roaming eye sees the harsh realities while when he's in his trip and just looking at specific things not trying to find meaning or get a "grip" he realized what he really cares about and where he's at. The flappity flap is saying that the person not tripping (probably a symbol for most people) are talking about nonsense and the stuff that doesn't really matter at all. When people are on a trip they are known to say stuff like "this is where i'm at"

I disagree with Optimus, I think It is about somebody being fake:

"and to think You got a grip, well look at yourself" People that are fake usually think they "have a grip" or are cool but they are just really insecure with themselves.

"I'm all staged, it's all an act" They are being somebody they arent

I really dont see how this song has anything to do with phychedelics, when people are frying on acid, they are just frying balls, people dont think about where they are at or the things they care about. And usually I am quite (but that is just me). For instance If it is a good trip you are enjoying what you are seeing, when having a bad trip, you freak out and want it to end.

Its really hard to declare a song is about drugs (inless it is blaintently clear) because everyone has a different perspective when they are on a certain drug.

This song has nothing to do with drugs, specifically. It seems to me that the narrator is putting his/her own life or the life of a friend in a different, new light to reveal hidden anguish. The person is ignoring the past and current problems and must face his/her life in order to ensure fulfillment in the future.

"Let's begin with the past in front" reminds me of a way that a terrible, depressing conversation would begin with a significant other. There's probably some resentment involved.

I really like this song, I don't think it is about psychedelic substances but I have to say I disagree with Boognish_rising's take on it. People do think about stuff they care about when they're frying, and if anyone can tell us that it's Ween.
