Most of the comments so far seem to sugest this song is about a guy asking for forgiveness after a bad argument. I always thought it was a bit darker than that. Based on the lyrics:
"The sun is shining in your eyes"
amd
"Some times I feel like my old man, you know that's hard for me to say"
Another term for a black eye is a shiner, I always though "the sun is shining in your eyes" was a reference to the physical abuse this man has wrought upon Gabrielle. This I thought was enforced by the line about feeling like his old man and that being difficult for him. It sugests he behaves like his father who he clearly has contempt for, likely due to abuse he or his mother endured from him. I don't know if I'm reading in to it to far though.
The whole song seems to be the guy making the kind of piffy excuses an abuser would make to his abused spouse.
Just my take but I would like to know if any one else think it's about a physically abusive relationship?

Oh my god, i cannot believe no-one has commented on this song yet, its such a good song. It makes me want to name my child Gabrielle, lol.
I think it's pertty obvious what it's about though - its about a guy who obviously had a fight with his girl but wrote this song to apologize and show how much he loves her.

Funny you mention that, I fell in love with the guy who introduced me to ween, and this was the first song he sent me over AIM to apologize for hurting me (he accidentally made me trip and really hurt myself). He actually was trying to send the ween songs friends, but i got this, and the second i heard it, i couldnt get it out of my head. at all.

This song is NOT about "Gabrielle" It's about an abusive narcissist douche with no substance in his "I love you" telling a girl she's not perfect, he's the omni-present, all powerful, sun shining in her eye's making her cry.
