This song is beautiful, heartbreaking and so underrated. Mary Lambert is an amazing performer, enough people don't appreciate it. Sometimes, with a lot of songs, you can't exactly tell what it's about or how the singer is supposed to feel, because it's so subtle. But Mary Lambert is so direct and upfront about her feelings, which I love, because it makes her performance so much more believable and real. And that's not an easy thing to do, to reveal how vulnerable you are. Literally, each "I'm sorry" she sings doesn't sound like just a mere repetition of words, she pours her heart into each one, to the point where someone listening to the song can feel exactly what she felt. You can tell that she really IS sorry. |

Just by listening to this song, it felt nostalgic and haunting, like something that would trigger memories. The piano chords/synths in the choruses kinda sounded like "shivers", if you get what I mean. I think it's about someone who wishes they hadn't taken for granted how special their past relationship was. They ruined the beauty of their relationship through the fighting and resentment. But looking back on it, after a while, she has tried new relationships, but she doesn't truly feel in love the way she did with this one person. And that's when she realizes that the way she felt with this guy wasn't something you could easily find, and she shouldn't have wasted it. Their relationship wasn't perfect, and maybe they weren't meant for each other in the end. But it's not about that, it's about appreciating that raw infatuation and attraction you have when you fall in love with someone, instead of getting angry over "who's fault it was" when it ended. |

At first I thought this was about a long distance relationship, but that's just one aspect of it. It's definitely more than that. I feel like it's about an unbalanced relationship. The POV is very devoted to the person/deeply in love, and would do anything for them. POV thinks that this person may not feel the same to that extent. What I picture is maybe a relationship that developed from a one night stand/sexual encounter. POV wants something more with their partner, but the partner doesn't feel as emotionally connected, and views their relationship as more of a one-time-thing. |

I couldn't help but think of this as a love song. Not just by the lyrics, but the guitar picking that continues throughout is lighthearted and innocent. I feel like it's about a naive guy who is intrigued by a dangerous girl, and quickly sort of loses his innocence/"good boy" character as he gets drawn deeper to her. ("Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on it's sword, innocence died screaming) In the pre-chorus, I think POV is saying how she stands out to him, and she never bores him the way others (I assume) do. In a more general sense though, I think it's about how infatuation can abruptly cause you to "betray" who you are, and to mindlessly risk things just for that one person. Even if the person doesn't feel the same. (Expressed in the line "I slithered here from Eden, just to sit outside your door".) By the end of the song, "sit" changes to "hide," which makes me think that he ended up paying the price for chasing after this girl, and feels guilty about it although he really knew all along. The feel of the song changes as well, after that intense bridge-interlude part. It sounds less like innocent love and more like...apologetic and slightly hopeless, I guess. That's slightly off, but you get the idea. |
