Shiver Lyrics

We broke
Everything that was right.
We both enjoyed a good fight.

And we sewed
All the holes we had to breathe
To make the other one leave.

I loved
The way you looked at me.
And I miss
The way you made me feel
When we were alone.

And I'll shiver like I used to.
And I'll leave him just for you.
And I'll shiver like I used to,
Just for you.

And we stole
Every moment we had
To make the other one feel bad.
And we hoped
That we could be what we knew.
We'd never turn out to be real.

And if we turn back time,
Could we learn to live right?
Could we learn?

Like I used to.

This song helps me express how I feel since breaking up with my ex over a year ago. I've been with many people since; but never had that allusive "feeling" I once had. Something deep, and scary inside still longs for her and I know that given the chance I would drop everything and everyone to go back to her and the way she made me feel.

Lucy's lyrics hold so much regret. A regret I completely identify with. Relationships are hard, and moving on is harder.

My Interpretation

I feel like this song is about someone who's with someone she doesn't feel as strongly for as another who either used to be her partner or perhaps was someone she had an affair with (though I'm leaning more toward former partner). She's with the new guy, but she doesn't feel for him what she felt for the former, she feels like things were more passionate, more perfect with that "one that got away", and, if given the chance, she'd drop her current other half for the former in a heartbeat.

I think every woman has felt what I imagine is that particular longing shiver that Lucy sings about, and it's something that you get addicted to finding and having it happen frequently when you think of the one you care about. Of course, when relationships are over, if it ends on a non-toxic note (and sometimes even when it does), as time goes on, we remember the good times the most, the shiny silvery bits. Then, once a newer relationship has been going on for a while and the "new" wears off, you wonder if that old one that ended was much better than what you have now and thoughts like that sometimes happen, especially if said shiver pops up and rolls through your body.

There's so many good songs on this album, but the sound and lyrics of this one alone may be my favorite - that steel guitar is amazing and haunting and so so perfect later in the tune. Lucy, keep the good stuff coming!

My Interpretation

Just by listening to this song, it felt nostalgic and haunting, like something that would trigger memories. The piano chords/synths in the choruses kinda sounded like "shivers", if you get what I mean. I think it's about someone who wishes they hadn't taken for granted how special their past relationship was. They ruined the beauty of their relationship through the fighting and resentment. But looking back on it, after a while, she has tried new relationships, but she doesn't truly feel in love the way she did with this one person. And that's when she realizes that the way she felt with this guy wasn't something you could easily find, and she shouldn't have wasted it.

Their relationship wasn't perfect, and maybe they weren't meant for each other in the end. But it's not about that, it's about appreciating that raw infatuation and attraction you have when you fall in love with someone, instead of getting angry over "who's fault it was" when it ended.

The song talks about being broken, describing how the relationship played out and how it now affects every new relationship "i'll leave him just for you", in a repeating cycle over and over "like i used to", which is why she wonders had things been different if she could had become a different person

@GetLexy this song recently played on the HBO original series Girls and it evoked so many emotions in me, I wondered if others felt the same and it seems like you have similar tannins. Do you still feel the same after a few more years?

I personally believe that this song may be about her best friend stealing the man she loved from her. Things weren't going well between them, they got in fights and hurt each other as suggested by the first two verses. And in the chorus she says "and I'll leave him just for you" so considering how much she clearly loved him (as is portrayed through the song) and yet she still left him, saying she'll 'shiver like she used to' (which I believe means shivering from the loneliness and lack of warmth she had from her significant other. Like being cold at night with no one to hold you) leads me to believe she hasn't left him for someone else she loves. So to me the only logical conclusion would be that in order to keep her friendship she left him, gave him up, for her friend.

This song is about remembering young days by a old guy. The couple had some fighting along the way and life was not 100% but, hey young days are always better days full of memories.

LOL at all you lovers. You don't need to be so emotionally engaged with life to appreciate good song. On the contrary, I rather believe that emotionally detached single people can understand love songs better.
