Toby Lightman – Don't Wanna Know Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is about being a huge fan of a musician and going to all his concerts but never wanting to meet him in person in case she has a bad experience and he's tainted in her mind forever.

Jewel – Barcelona Lyrics 10 years ago
There is a story that goes with this song that most people don't know about. Jewel was doing a concert in Barcelona and, I guess because of cultural differences, about an hour into hte show, the majority of the audience just ups and leaves. LIke they are trying to beat the crowd to get home. So Jewel, who is notorious for always demanding full attention when she performs (telling people to be quiet or saying if they want to talk, they should do it outside) was crushed, feeling like the audience wasn't captivated. She stopped the song she was doing and immediately started the crowd-pleasing "Chime Bells" (at that time, people would chant for her to yodel from the minute she stepped on stage). People stopped in their tracks but still left an almost empty theater. She went home and wrote this song -- "If you could hear
the voice in my heart, it would tell you, I'm afraid I am alone. Won't somebody please hold me, release me, show me the meaning of mercy." She felt horrible about herself and her value and talent after that night ("Super paranoid. I'm blending, I'm blurring. I'm bleeding into the scenery. Loving someone else is so much easier but I hold myself hostage in the mirror").

Jewel – Enter From The East Lyrics 10 years ago
The song is about someone she met while she was on tour (on the East Coast) and how she was sad to be leaving ("The clock became a bullet hole, Cruel and unkind,
It hurt me with its second hand"). "Hollow out my insides to place you in" sounds like she was in a lascivious mood (like one of her early, unreleased songs "Stick your finger in my buttercup"... she was pretty open about her sexuality). Interestingly enough, she recycled a line from "Absence of Fear" which appears on the Spirit album -- "Inside my heart, there's an empty room, it's waiting for lightning, it's waiting for you." Lightning being a reference to how rare a circumstance it is for lightning to strike... it's just as farfetched to expect him, etc.

The Neighbourhood – Afraid Lyrics 11 years ago
It's definitely fake that dummy. Don't know how "bunny" got circulated. It's even more articulate when he sings it live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwZk3G-44kI

Alanis Morissette – That I Would Be Good Lyrics 12 years ago
This is reminding herself that she doesn't have to maintain her success or her looks or anything to be a good person. She can do absolutely nothing, never make another album, become unattractive and it doesn't mean she is any "less" than she is at that moment, when she is acclaimed for her achievements. It's the tortured world of being an artist, feeling like you only have value when you're embraced universally and then you step back and wonder how you can live up to this perception of you.

Alanis Morissette – Can't Not Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is definitely about criticism she received when she became successful, hence the "Would I be whining if I said I needed a hug?" At the height of her popularity, when people tried to tear her down, they would always referenced that she sounds like she's "whining" (in terms of the way her voice cracks) on the album. The "Would you feel slighted if I said your love wasn't enough?" seems to be referenced to the fans who love her, obsessively. It seems that she's sensitive when being picked apart. I like to think of the "schoolyard" term literally, meaning how everyone seems to think they are a self-appointed critic, although this is probably more obvious nowadays when people go on the Internet to purge their nasty thoughts on every actor, movie, singer, etc.

Wow, after all these years, I looked it up and he was never married after dating Alanis. So guess not.

Alanis Morissette – I Was Hoping Lyrics 12 years ago
I always figured this song was about Dave Coulier reuniting with her after the success of "You Oughta Know." Because of the mention of his wife and also the fact that he's recognized (as a celebrity) by the head waiter, who is old enough to watch a PG show like "Full House" with his family but not young enough to listen to "Jagged Little Pill." Also, "Yes, but you've been wearing leather" seems like a clever thing a professional comedian would come up with and the in-depth conversation is not atypical for a comedian, who tend to be tortured when they play very goofy characters and in reality, have so much more intellect that they have to repress. That's probably what brought Dave and Alanis together in the first place.

The Cranberries – Hollywood Lyrics 12 years ago
If you've ever visited Hollywood, California, it's a rundown, trashy place with nothing but a bunch of tourist shops. I always thought the song was literally about visiting the city for the first time and being disappointed.... how you can hear about something your whole life and then it is nothing like you pictured. In other words, not about "Hollywood" to represent "the entertainment industry" but about the physical city.

Alanis Morissette – Uninvited Lyrics 12 years ago
Courtney Love usually to antagonize Alanis Morissette (like she did with a lot of female artists -- Tracy Bonham, Sheryl Crow, Madonna, Tori Amos have all mentioned her in songs). Alanis thought of herself as a stoic who loved everybody unconditionally but she only had ill thoughts about Courtney which is what "Uninvited" is about. "Must be strangely excited to see the stoic squirm" She even is surprised to realize she has things in common with her given interviews where she can relate ("You speak of your love like you've had experiences like mine")

Fiona Apple – Never Is a Promise Lyrics 12 years ago
Fiona said when she was 15, she was on vacation with her family and not having a very good time. Apparently, she felt like she didn't connect with her parents (mother) and they didn't understand the way she thinks, why she is pursuing a career in the arts (You say you'll never let me fall from hopes so high, You'll say it looks as though I might give up this fight). So she just sat on the boat and wrote the lyrics to "Never Is A Promise" acknowledging that while she knows how she feels, when she tries to articulate it to her parents, they don't truly understand and she wises up and realizes she should just stop trying to explain (I realize what I am now too smart to mention to you).
