Boy & Bear – Mexican Mavis Lyrics 9 years ago
It's talking about men who obtain things in life solely in the name of greed and selfishness. Doing anything to persuade and charm, but they are sleepless at night because the girl is just another object/goal to obtain where they always want more. When the writer loves it has no measure and no limits that must be met. For him the girl is not a goal or something to maintain. She's a partner... At least that's what I see in the lyrics.

Sympathy towards a past event that cannot be changed is like a person who is sad while looking at the picture of a lost game. It's okay to be sad from time to time while viewing this picture "don't forget to cry", but don't let that sympathy turn to misery that will consume your whole life-- Blending together every day to be the same tragic mundane existence out of sadness, each saturday to saturday. On my 81st Birthday as an old man I will sit at the end of the line and view the happier moments with nostalgia.

The picture of the game lost holds a lot of meaning to this song, because it was in that mental snapshot the other person decided to live forever in sorrow. They never viewed it as a funeral to a lost time to then move on. They improperly treated it as a death of self. On the other hand, he "licks up" his 81st birthday. He lives up to it despite while he goes to waste, he lived through the misery and joy to still be able to recall that joy in the end. To view something nostalgically and to view something in sympathy is a very different beast.

It's good that you like the pictures of a game lost. You enjoy living no matter the outcome. Many will be destroyed in those moments and find it hard to carry on. We should always enjoy those snapshots. The depth/passion of every moment (even those containing misery) is such an intricate experience to live, as long as you remember to live/experience them fully. Without those moments and without those moments ensured as passing, a person has yet to live a REAL life at all.

Sorry, I can type for hours on Miike Snow's lyrics. One of the few artists that carries a real depth to their lyrics, and done so beautifully at that.

Miike Snow – Silvia Lyrics 9 years ago
So I'm going to do a breakdown of the song to interpret WITH THE CORRECT LYRICS since the site as well as all of you are posting them wrong;

"Reach the city steps tonight
Following the power lines
Met a man bar side
With eclipses for eyes"
This is a statement of Sylvia leaving home and following the power lines to the city nightlife. This statement is literal as all suburb powergrids feed into a large city at the edges. Follow the main lines and you'll get there-- there to meet the guy at the bar with eclipsed eyes, mind filled with dark intentions.

"And you tell yourself you won't let them touch
Did I say too much? Did I say enough?
I don't know, Silvia
I don't know, Silvia"
This is in reference to a conversation before she left. She recognizes the ill intent of many men, but she can fend them off. He does desire her, but it's not reciprocated. This then comes to a stance of pretending to be protective but in reality it's slightly hostile since it holds jealous undertones. Did he say too much and provoke her into doing what he feared on purpose? Did he say too little and now she'll get hurt out of naivety?

"Circle 'round the room still
Have fun breaking my will
No, I can't have you here
With someone else on your skin"
He paced in worry while she was gone and even still after she returns. She's back but she went against his will. She didn't heed his words, those words that did come off with a controlling undertone before-- But it wasn't meant to be control in his eyes. It was him trying to show her his love. Now she returns after doing who knows what with other men. He can't bare to confront her or the thought that she is not his. No matter the reality of for the better or worse, he can't face the possibility of the unknown worse no matter what she says.

"And it's all my fault for not getting off
so you made it start, can you make it stop?
You don't know, Silvia
You don't know, Silvia"
They were an item prior to the beginning of the song, but decided to go on a break. He wants this to end and for things to go back to the way things were, but with his approach she fears that he has just as ill intent as other predators out there. She feel's he's just trying to control her and is unsure about going back to him in that way.

"Tear me up
Tear me up"
She isn't actually leaving him. She's trying to play the field while keeping him as her safety now and it's destroying him.

"Reach the city steps tonight
Following the power lines
And your skin is so white
Underneath the black night
And your voice cries out for the coup de grâce
And the lights go out, will there be a trace?
That I loved, Silvia
That I loved, Silvia
(That I loved, Silvia)"
She goes back out to the city and her skin is a beacon to other men. She is the prey and everyone including the singer are the predators. She herself is being torn up as well. She's crying out to be killed out of mercy instead of having all of these men dig into her with what they will her to do. She doesn't want to be subjected to the will of another, but she can't enjoy her life without them treating her like their play thing... And yet the singer asks her is their anything left of what I want, Silvia? Silvia? She's not responding because she took the metaphorical bullet and gave up.

"Tear me up
(That I loved, Silvia)"

In summary, this is a song about a person who places their will onto another person like a ton of bricks because he fears of losing them. She leaves to find something lighter but finds the same thing no matter where she goes, predators. She tortures her past love in the process of getting nowhere then takes a bullet metaphorically or in reality-- either way she's gone/unresponsive. It's a story about selfishness, control, and jealousy in the affairs of love killing those that you love in all directions.

BAMF! correct lyrics and meaning. Have a good night. :)

The Shins – It's Only Life Lyrics 9 years ago
The person walked away from him. The second party thought they were getting handed all of the answers by another person/group as they conformed to feel like part of a pack. He never gives up on them but he doesn't follow them either. They thought that they were growing as a person, but in reality everything they were learning and doing was wrong. It all came back to hurt them later down the road. Once they realize they were wrong, everyone who they've been walking alongside turns on them. The person turns back to him, the one they left behind with tears in their eyes... And he's still there waiting. He says it's fine, it's only life and we've all went in wrong directions. He says ' yes you left me to free fall to your own destruction, but i've been waiting here for you with a parachute.' Even through all of the pain (that he refused to partake in) he never left because that person was still his opportunity for happiness and he could never lose sight of it... Even if it was so distant for so long. Will they take his help, or will they wander off alone into the dark?

Miike Snow – The Wave Lyrics 11 years ago
In an interview they discussed the meanings that people have derived from this series of songs. They mentioned the music industry analogy that fans have made and stated that they enjoy that the fans pulled it from their songs (and agree with the statement); But they also said that the statements about the music industry was not the original meanings of the songs. They also noted that they didn't want to state the original meaning because, like any work of art, they wanted the viewer to extract their own meaning.

I'm surprised how wrong you all are. Not to be offensive, sorry.
"Misery is all we know lately
Saturdays are all the same
Sympathy is overrated
Like a snapshot when you've lost the game"
The relationship has failed and sympathizing with the other will not resolve conflicts so deeply rooted. No matter the level of understanding-- The differences are irreconcilable. We have lost.
"Now it's all the funeral
I've become a serial
Killer of us both
Now it's all the funeral
I've become a serial
Killer of us both"
I have to call it here. It's done. Commence the funeral to grieve and cope what we once had because there is no further to go.
"No, I
Don't want to get thrown in your ocean
Don't try
You know that we already know it
It's over"
I pretty literal statement. I am not a fish in your sea. We are not only done here but there is no possibility in the future either.
"At your own burial
Don't forget to cry
At your own burial"
CRY! There is something to grieve at the loss of what we had. Cope with the loss and don't have hope of this ever returning.
"Licking up my eighty-first birthday
Every day this body goes to waste
Remembering how I would raise an army
When we went back to your place"
Now I am worn... I have been wearing down for so long and my starry eyed youth will not return. Once I had the energy to fight for anything, but now I begrudgingly accept that there's nothing left to that man.
