@[guertin11:53057] I agree with this interpretation. When I was 14 years old I showed my dad the lyrics to this song because i didn't understand them, and he had the same opinion. I think the anti-synthesizer idea is interesting but TH liked synthesizers and cybernetics, so there's that. I would connect it to how any art form, like rock and roll, starts out being rebellious and fun, and there seems to be no rules. eventually, the art form must conform to social rules. |

George Michael was gay, so he can't be writing this song from experience. Or can he? Maybe he was writing about a man he was in a relationship with, and threw in the "and you tell me that you're having my baby" line to throw listeners off the scent. Or, perhaps he was writing about his relationship with his mother, but still, that doesn't quite fit either. |

@[nOraKat:36139] In the 70s in Germany there was a lot of terrorism, and many artists and young people were put on computer databases and surveilled. I have a feeling some members of Kraftwerk were spied on. Don't quote me on that. |

I've danced to this song across decades and continents. Probably the first time was in my bedroom in high school in california, then in holland while studying abroad. then in san francisco at new wave city. Then in New York, at the "heroes" nightclub. Then at a wedding in California in 2015. |

This is one of their Alfred Hitchcock songs, the imagery is dreamlike, like a hitchcock film. the lyrics are sort of social commentary, but I don't think they wanted it to make too much sense, so that you could get lost in the vibe of the song. like a mini psychological thriller.
I love siouxsie, the songs are so finely crafted. |

Kylie expresses so much with such simple lyrics. She never says anything about the object of her affection, and so she is really describing herself, a darker desire that will never be satisfied. the singing is cool, funky yet restrained, kind of mysterious. it makes me think of how sweet and tempting obsession can be. |

There are so many terrible things about this song that it's difficult to "just enjoy it." The sounds used in the song are cheap and unimaginative, the lyrics and delivery are played out, the beat and production are generic, and then there's the lead melody that "buzzes like a fly trapped in jism."
It's definitely catchy, but in the worst way possible. It fascinates me. |

| Howard Jones – Natural Lyrics

These lyrics are so good. I was just thinking of this line today:
Everything we like and don't like is whole and natural
I know it doesn't feel like it and the world seems wrong
But if we don't like it now then who can we blame?
Blame god, be still, find harmony
This reminds me of how the world always seems to be getting worse, traffic is getting worse, facebook is getting lamer, U2 isn't as good as they used to be, etc. But this is all natural, and you always find new things to get excited about. |

Was just listening to this in a cafe. What an amazing song! The way it brings the listener back to a previous era. What was John thinking? Maybe he was lampooning the Victorian era, saying that british society is still as uptight as it was back then, but then he probably just got so into the vibe that he forgot about his original critical stance. His vocal stylings are just soooo amazing.
Also, I think some of the instrumental bits that add so much to the song must have been composed by George Martin.

I was a fan of this song when I was, like 11 years old, before I realized that I should be into cool modern music, like howard jones or the cure. and my instincts were correct; this music is the geekiest music ever. but it's really good too! |

omigod, love this song, it really just does not get any better. 80s catchy style, awesome lyrics, dry humor ... makes me feel better about the times I've been dumped, because often when you get to the point of dumping someone, if you're honest, you don't really care about them. you just want to get away. |

I've gotta say, this one of my least favorite DM lyrics. Gore is a genius because he gets us to follow him into his demented, perverted world, but with this song he takes it a little too far and I just don't identify with what's going on here. or maybe it's a little to on the nose for my taste. |

To add to the above comment, I think this song is Bernard trying to write like Morrissey, and making fun of him a little bit. I feel like it's part of the relationship between Morrissey/The Smiths and New Order, both Manchester bands. Morrissey had slagged off New Order's lyrics as being meaningless at one point. |

I agree with lolly rotten ... For me this song is about doing what you think is right and it's usually better not to listen to people who only want to manipulate you. It makes me think of all the therapists, self-help gurus, dating coaches, and how so much of this industry does not help anybody. Or maybe some people are helped, but it's never helped me at all, and I'm sure Morrissey feels the same way :) |
