Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself Lyrics
The sanest days are mad
Why don't you find out for yourself?
Then you'll see the price
Very closely
Some men here
They have a special interest
In your career
They want to help you to grow
And then siphon all your dough
Why don't you find out for yourself?
Then you'll see the glass
Hidden in the grass
You'll never believe me, so
Why don't you find out for yourself?
Sick down to my heart
That's just the way it goes
Some men here
They know the full extent of
Your distress
They kneel and pray
And they say:
"Long may it last"
Why don't you find out for yourself?
Then you'll see the glass
Hidden in the grass
Bad seeds come and go
For which you must allow
Sick down to my heart
That's just the way it goes
Don't rake up my mistakes
I know exactly what they are
And what do you do?
Well you just sit there
I've been stabbed in the back
So many many times
I don't have any skin
But that's just the way it goes
Why don't you find out for yourself?
Then you'll see the price
Very closely
They have a special interest
In your career
They want to help you to grow
And then siphon all your dough
Why don't you find out for yourself?
Then you'll see the glass
Hidden in the grass
Why don't you find out for yourself?
Sick down to my heart
That's just the way it goes
They know the full extent of
Your distress
They kneel and pray
And they say:
"Long may it last"
Then you'll see the glass
Hidden in the grass
Bad seeds come and go
For which you must allow
Sick down to my heart
That's just the way it goes
I know exactly what they are
And what do you do?
Well you just sit there
I've been stabbed in the back
So many many times
I don't have any skin
But that's just the way it goes

i agree with the previous interpretation, for me it also has a lot to do with doing what you feel is right and not beleiving eerything you are told. this song is amazing :) :)
Peoples comments mention the music industry, and I also, although probably based on that, that it can be applied to many other situations which means the listener can relate to it somewhat.
Its like telling someone the truth about something or how they feel about something and the other person doesn't care or more importantly doesn't believe it,
Why don't you find out for yourself? Then you'll see the glass Hidden in the grass
It's like when you've given up trying to get your opinion and thought across so you just tell them they'll find out one day for themselves. Then they will eventually see the glass in the grass but it'll be too late then, as you only see it once you've stepped on it because the truth is made to be very hidden and concealed, so they wont understand until they have experienced first hand too.
There is also a very solemn acceptance of this issue:
But that's just the way it goes
My fav Morrisey song post-Smiths. I heard this the other night at a music shop and now I cannot stop listening to this. I forgot how great Vauxhall & I is. That album IMO ranks with any Smiths record in greatness.
"Don't rake up my mistakes I know exactly what they are"
Ode to Nico, I think -
From 'These Days' - "Don't confront me with my failures, I had not forgotten them"
I agree with lolly rotten ... For me this song is about doing what you think is right and it's usually better not to listen to people who only want to manipulate you. It makes me think of all the therapists, self-help gurus, dating coaches, and how so much of this industry does not help anybody. Or maybe some people are helped, but it's never helped me at all, and I'm sure Morrissey feels the same way :)

In my opinion, this song has a great deal to do with the hypocrisy of the music industry. "the glass hidden in the grass" tends to lean toward the pain of trying to "make it" in the music industry. With lines that talk about "syphon your dough" may very well be talking about how much $$ a record lable takes from the artist and how they tend to keep artists as novelties by kneeling and praying that the artist's contract,"long may it last", keep him bound to distress.
sigh....so good. You both are dead on.
This is my favorite Morrissey song. Along with "The Operation", "swallow on my neck", and almost all the others...
God, I love how he sings 'heart' for the first time. It gives me goose bumps.
Please everyone never take for granted the unique powers people possess and how we must embrace them. Morrissey's in this case is his uncanny ability to produce material like this and make us all feel something we've never quite felt before. I encourage you to go see him if you haven't! You'll be missing (IMO) one of the top musicians/songwriters of all time and people unfortunately live and die. PLEASE catch him as soon as you can if you haven't already. Nostalgia is far more powerful than any present reality.
