One of the most beautifully simple songs I've ever heard. "The words spilled out my cloudy head You were eloquent and elegant instead" - He is confused and nervous, she is obviously poised and prepared and "elegant"/beautiful. "When I took you into the game You hadn't been before so I had to explain" - despite all that, she's "new to the game" - possibly a brand new relationship. I feel like the next lines are rather unrelated but still about this relationship. the couple are watching all the goings on in the Halloween night but making love ("the leaves had left a floor for us"). |

I believe it's "the merry June night will be a huge canvas". Anyways, breathtaking song. The explosion of noisy guitars after the tense spoken word is amazing. I have no clue what the last stanza of "A clock..." is supposed to tie into it. I feel like it's separate from the rest of the story, and is just kind of to kick in the album proper. |

Definitely think this is about a relationship that has ended the girl is not giving it up. She "sleeps fitfully", thinking of her lover and just wants to make him proud and try to give up the relationship. She finds a stranger to become intimate with but, in the end, the original guy is all that she wants. "And if she dreams she dreams of / the sounds you'll never speak" is one of my favorite lyrics. Still keeping in line with the fact that she sleeps fitfully, her head filled with thoughts of her lost lover and only desiring to hear their voice again, but knowing that she lost him. |
