You don't really read an honest song about that too often and I love the term he uses as opposed to all the synonyms posted in this thread. I wonder how that person he wrote it about felt when they read the lyrics? I wonder if she came back to him and they got married and had two kids. |

This song has such and amazing sound that it leaves me transfixed every time I hear it, but the words are so mysterious. I'd love to know who he's talking about... the words seem so specific I can't help but wonder if it's written about a person in NY's life, maybe Crosby or Stills or Geffen or maybe even Corbain. No clue. |

I think this song is about getting off coke and going back to smoking pot. He realized that speed was making him old and crazy and ruining his life and health and weed was better for peace and happiness and love. The mansion on the hill is the higher place inside himself that he decided to re-connect to. Definitely one of the most rocking jams of all time. |

Also this is the only NY song that I know of where he sings in such a deep haunting baritone voice. Are there others? |

Got to be one of the most beautiful songs NY has ever done. I wonder if there's another version of it out there anywhere like a demo or a live version. Although the album version is perfect. |

I read that this song is about Neil Young's son that he struggles to communicate with because of his disability. I can kind of see it in some lines and it makes it even more beautiful than I thought it was when I thought it was just an interesting love song. |

Hard to believe I'm a 46 year old who's been largely unaware of Neil Young my entire life until the past 10 years or so and am still discovering his old albums in 2012. I just heard Rust for the first time a few weeks ago and this song blew me away. I know why young kids are still falling for him because his music is totally timeless and can mean something different to each person who hears it. He maybe have been talking about hippies and CSNY but new listeners who have never heard of them could take it in a way that relates to their lives just as much. Are there any other versions of this song? It seems that most of his tunes can be found on other albums etc and I'm wondering if anyone has seen any other live versions or studio demos or anything. Maybe I'll have to wait for Archive's2! |

The singer doesn't seem like he knows who is on the boat or what they want. He even says he hopes they aren't going to stay, which tells me that it's not about war or police. The most beautiful line is "It's got numbers on the side and a gun, and it's makin' big waves." The sentence starts out like a threat-assessment but then it turns into to a childlike observation of the cool motion of the craft in the water. It really shows how he's too young for all this in such an unexpected way.
I wonder if Neil knew what it was about; he's said that he doesn't "edit" songs, he just writes them down quick as they come to him and records them as soon as possible while they're fresh. I often do that with paintings, and later analyze them as if I'm looking at someone else's art. Since the songs just "come to him" then it explains why he never spends any time explaining what they mean.
