Razor Love Lyrics

I got to bet that your old man
Became fascinated with his own plans
Turned you loose, your mama too
There wasn't a thing that you could do
I got faith in you, it's the kind of love
That cuts clean through
I got faith in you, it's a razor love
And it's true

And you really made my day
With the little things you say
Right now I'm looking through the window at a silhouette
Trying to find something I can find yet
Imagination is my best friend
Got to watch out for the greedy hand, greedy hand
Make a living like a rolling stone
On the road there's no place like home
Silhouettes on the window

Who was it made your eyes flicker like that
Tell me baby, how'd you get the knack
I came to you with open arms
And I really took you down the track
Now all I've got for you is the kind of love
That cuts clean through
All I got for you is razor love
That cuts clean through

You really made my day
With the little things you say
Right now I'm looking through the window at a silhouette
Trying to find something I can find yet
Imagination is my best friend
Got to watch out for the greedy hand, greedy hand
Make a living like a rolling stone
On the road there's no place like home
Silhouettes on the window

I got to bet that your old man
Became fascinated with his own plans

Cover art for Razor Love lyrics by Neil Young

I always assumed the song was written for his daughter. Why?

"I got to bet that your old man" Here he refers to himself as a father, not as a boyfriend/husband because he also sings

"Turned you loose, your mama, too. There wasn't a thing that you could do." Children are not in a position to negotiate. He left his daughter and her mother.

They are the silhouettes at the window when he leaves them to go back on the road. But her arms welcome him back every time in spite of that. It's daddy, after all.

He feels warmth "by the little things you say" - the musings of a child are often heartwarming. At the same time, she can't stay young forever. He'll have to leave again and it hurts both of them. "It's a razor love that cuts clean through."

My Interpretation

@zelifia Thanks! You nailed it. Heard it first on "Transparent." Best Neil Young ever, IMO.

@zelifia That's the way I took it - although the child could be a boy.

Is this song about cocaine?

I think of it as a love song but maybe thats naive and wishful. I hate to think such a beautiful song is about coke. I can't say for sure, all i know is it's definitely a great great song. I think it's a love song.

This is my favourite Neil Young song and I think you just ruined it for me!

Cover art for Razor Love lyrics by Neil Young

I think he found a lover whose dad he knows. A popular artist . He knew this dad was caught up in himself and career and left her and her mom

He was acknowledging his awareness of her dad leaving for himself

He loved her But perhaps like her dad was not great at showing love

But he was aware and fixed

He lives the way she makes him feel
