Ryan Adams – Am I Safe Lyrics 10 years ago
This song seems to be about the tension one struggles with when the feelings an important relationship are based upon become a tether to past security and love, not a continuation of their actuality moving forward.

Did I even love her in the first place? Will I be ok without the emotional safety blanket he, she, they seemed to provide? Why do I feel bad about wanting to move on to happier things? Am I capable of feeling that way again? Was it all a farce?

What's striking is the intensity of his feelings about moving on.

"It's complicated, I just don't love you anymore, I just want to sit here and watch you burn."

Ryan Adams – Blue Sky Blues Lyrics 10 years ago
First, this is an extremely uplifting song, but it doesn't appear so at first. I'll explain in a bit.

I think this is a deeply personal ballad about the way Ryan Adams experiences life. He has inherited a "blue sky" personality or demeanor for day to day living that was essential for him growing up in emotional turmoil. Some perhaps always live in the "blue sky" where there's no rain or storms because they just say so. But "nobody goes to sleep for days" and are "trying not to slide into the ocean." Somethings up that must be dealt with.

Adams sings about the pain, courage, love, impatience, and earnestness, tied up in trying to explain the storms a dear one (perhaps self) doesn't want to admit to. He is clear that he cannot take away the pain but can perhaps guide a bit and sympathize. It's an affirmation of limitation, longing, and wisdom that can only be expressed in such a lovely song.

If our life's sky would just rain without shame or fear sometimes...

The Aztecs cut out the hearts of live children. This didn't make it into the song.

Neil Young – Cortez The Killer Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is completely ahistorical, so don't read it as such. "Hate was just a legend, war was never known" is complete BS if your looking at this from a historical perspective. The Aztecs were an empire that subjugated other peoples and captured the youth of neighboring tribes so they could be sacrificed instead of their own children. Moreover, the real killer wasn't Cortez but small pox.

As far as Neil's song goes it's very well done, but it can't be read as history.
