This song seems to be about the tension one struggles with when the feelings an important relationship are based upon become a tether to past security and love, not a continuation of their actuality moving forward.
Did I even love her in the first place? Will I be ok without the emotional safety blanket he, she, they seemed to provide? Why do I feel bad about wanting to move on to happier things? Am I capable of feeling that way again? Was it all a farce?
What's striking is the intensity of his feelings about moving on.

Someone really messed up the bridge lyrics. They make no sense. It should be:

Sounds like he may have been pondering his divorce before Prisoner after all.

I think it’s about the guilt you would have by leaving somebody and if you yourself will be able to live with that guilt.
Close my eyes, what if it was mine? That’s the guilt of wanting out of a good relationship.
