Blue Sky Blues Lyrics

Blue sky, when you gonna learn to rain?
And let yourself go blue for once
And let go of that weight you've been carrying
In this house, no one goes to sleep for days
It's like were working on a mountainside
Trying not to slide
Into the ocean

I can take care of you
But only if you want
I'm strong enough to carry you
Across the icy lake
Across the icy lake
But I can't fight your blues
'Cause I know I'll lose
What's left of my mind
I can't win
But for you I will try
My baby blue

My mountain is hidden in a pile of trees
And she's the one I'll have to climb
If I ever wanna see
Over the ocean
Blue sky
When you gonna learn to rain?
And let yourself go blue for once
And let go of that pain?

I can take care of you
The way you'd like to feel
Underneath the riverbed
Across the icy lake
Across the icy lake
But I can't fight your blues
'Cause I know I'll lose
What's left of my mind
I can't win
But for you I will try
For you
My baby blue

This song reminds me so much of my friend, because sometimes I feel like he's so sad and i just can't do anything, and I myself am sliding into the ocean every passing day.. but I'll still try to take care of my baby blue...

i just listened to this song for the first time. and thought the exact same thing. i have a really close friend. and sometimes he just gets so melancholy, and he won't talk about it or let it out. and i feel like i should help him, but i don't know how. and all i wanna do is take care of him and be there for him.

Beautiful and yet so sad...

Someone that is just so god damn melancholy that all you want to do is make them better, help them, love them, whatever, but they are too damn proud or stoic to even let you try to knock a brick or two from their wall.

You get the feeling that if the individual the protagonist is singing about would just "rain" (cry) and let it out.

this is one of the few ryan adams songs i don't know. and i'm about to download it. but just without ever listening to it, anyone think it has to do with Wilco's song/album "sky blue sky"?

not at all. unless tweedy wrote this after hearing '29'. i'm not sure how old the song was, but the album came out in 2005 and was recorded in 2004.

you need to get the album '29' my friend.

These are some of the most beautiful lyrics I've ever heard. To want so badly to help someone who can't seem to help themselves, yet knowing all the while that you can't do it it for them... it's heartbreaking.

My favorite part is...

But I can't fight your blues 'Cause I know I'll lose What's left of my mind I can't win But for you I will try

Out of all the lyrics in this song, those ones speak the most strongly to me.

First, this is an extremely uplifting song, but it doesn't appear so at first. I'll explain in a bit.

I think this is a deeply personal ballad about the way Ryan Adams experiences life. He has inherited a "blue sky" personality or demeanor for day to day living that was essential for him growing up in emotional turmoil. Some perhaps always live in the "blue sky" where there's no rain or storms because they just say so. But "nobody goes to sleep for days" and are "trying not to slide into the ocean." Somethings up that must be dealt with.

Adams sings about the pain, courage, love, impatience, and earnestness, tied up in trying to explain the storms a dear one (perhaps self) doesn't want to admit to. He is clear that he cannot take away the pain but can perhaps guide a bit and sympathize. It's an affirmation of limitation, longing, and wisdom that can only be expressed in such a lovely song.

If our life's sky would just rain without shame or fear sometimes...
