Zola Jesus – Lick The Palm Of The Burning Handshake Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I'd like to add, the last line that gets repeated several times is "I'm not the one you need." Wonderful song. |
Blue Hawaii – In Two / In Two II Lyrics | 11 years ago |
At the end she's saying "It only makes you sicker/ and me wiser; the end to us." |
Saint Saviour – Reasons Lyrics | 11 years ago |
So. Much. Emotion. |
Zola Jesus – Vessel Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Even after listening to a ton of live recordings I can't make out all of what she's saying, but these are the lines I'm pretty sure about (with brackets around the things I'm only guessing at): [...] pulls you in [...] the [harpoon] evolves, evolves around you Sicker the cells of our pain Falling deeper, deep the stains of [our youth] Past comes in through the [dusk] I'm sorry words we spoke of you And it surrounds everything And it surrounds all your [friends] And it will take you to a place you never knew [...] of our names [...] [...] as if we had no use, no use to live [...] of our sin [...] are we not [though]? Walls crumbles into And it surrounds everything And it surrounds all your [friends] And it will take you to a place you never knew [Set us free, set us free, set us until you forget everything] and then why won't you [stay]-- You won't remember, no, no, you won't remember |
Antony and the Johnsons – Salt Silver Oxygen Lyrics | 11 years ago |
It is really for sure, but in the booklet that comes with the physical album it says "for shore." I think this is for aesthetic purposes because this is how Antony pronounces it, but it is understood a "for sure" regardless. |
Stars – Lights Changing Colour Lyrics | 11 years ago |
One of my favorites off The North. Beautiful sound and such nostalgic lyrics. |
Semi Precious Weapons – Look At Me Lyrics | 12 years ago |
My favorite of theirs. |
CocoRosie – Tears for Animals Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I love this song. Antony is fantastic. And everyone is fantastic. And this single is fantastic. <3 |
Nico – Konig Lyrics | 12 years ago |
O King, may you lead Let me accompany you O King, may you lead Let me accompany you Onto this wide beach Take my hand I wish to give you everything that you hold dear A hope and a desire Your glance falls into my tent* (*- Roughly. This line may be a reference to Mahler's Kindertotenlieder; it doesn't exactly make grammatical sense; a verb seems to be missing.) |
Mountain Man – Dog Song Lyrics | 12 years ago |
One of my favorites of theirs. Albeit simple, very moving. |
M83 – Wait Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This song for me was an unexpected journey. It was just posted on someone's blog, I clicked play not even knowing the band, and I was transported. Sublimely and beautiful in an otherworldly way. |
Perfume Genius – No Tear Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I don't know how Perfume Genius can pack such emotional power and meaning into songs that are so short! These lyrics are pretty wrong though. This is what I hear: Roof comes down and you leave me with nothing, I I will shed no tear (will shed no tear) Earth gives way you leave me hanging, I I will shed no tear (will shed no tear) Baby, the feeling will bloom -- (I'm not completely sure about "feeling") with or without you and the core, it will turn with or without you And I will carry on I will carry on with grace Zero tears on my face (zero tears on my face) |
Musee Mecanique – Two Friends Like Us Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Great sound and lovely lyrics. |
Perfume Genius – All Waters Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I don't really like the way that Pitchfork interpreted it, or at least how they worded it, because it makes the song sound so pessimistic. I don't think the song is saying "people will always judge and threaten us for being publicly gay," but more lamenting how, if you grew up in those conditions, and if you grow up with that hesitation and fear, it has a way of staying with you even if it's no longer necessary. It's like a kind of scar. |
Perfume Genius – Put Your Back In 2 It Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I hear "Nothing you show me - I will never leave you" in that second to last line, but I may be wrong. This is such a wonderful song. To me, it's about how difficult it can be to open up to a lover sexually after having endured sexual abuse or manipulation elsewhere, and how sexuality can seem like a dirty and shameful thing after all that, but there is "still grace in this" and can still be shared with someone deeply trusted. Perfume Genius has such emotionally enthralling lyrics. And music. And everything. |
Perfume Genius – Katie Lyrics | 12 years ago |
So heartbreaking. The lyrics alone are stunning. |
Soap&Skin – Vater Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Vielen Dank for your help! With the last verse - I think she's saying that, even though he's died and she has times when she doesn't think of him, he reappears in her thoughts along with all the suffering and insecurities he placed on her. So, yeah, I think "You fall over" or "You bend over and finally reappear" ... sort of that sense of never being able to escape him, or the memory of him. |
Antony and the Johnsons – Cut the World Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I LOVE this song. I really hope we get a studio recording of it. |
Yoko Ono – Unun. To Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Oh, one mistake- "omoi de" should just be "omoide," changing the meaning to "such painful memories," making the verse "such painful memories [...] I ought to have forgotten." |
Yoko Ono – Unun. To Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This is one of my favorite Ono songs. Beautiful piano sounds, beautiful spoken word. I'm not exactly sure what "unun to" means- it must be an idiom or just a "shoo wop" kind of thing. "Unun" means "uh-huh" or "yeah, yeah" on its own. Anyway, here's my translation done to the best of my ability: Unun to, unun to Moaning of such painful emotions Unun to, unun to Moaning although I ought to have forgotten "Miracles" only exist in dreams. In the pitch-black darkness of a heart even now I am still startled [by it] [...] Unun to, unun to Moaning of such painful emotions Unun to, unun to Moaning I ought to have forgotten. |
Yoko Ono – Higa Noboru Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Very dreamy song, like deep meditation put to music and words. It may not be perfect, but here's my translation of the Japanese lyrics in this song: Transcend falsehood Transcend falsehood A thousand days in a single instant My piano has melted The room and the walls have also melted and the ceiling Something- a shining thing- I know that it's in the sky Transcend falsehood Transcend falsehood I am surrounded by green (as in grass and trees) I am sitting in a room with no walls or ceiling [English lyrics are introduced, and Japanese lyrics are repeated] I am here again. |
Yoko Ono – Woman Is the Nigger of the World Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Such a powerful song too often misunderstood. |
Sharon Van Etten – One Day Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I love this song! My friend and I have an inside joke of sorts, where whenever this song finishes playing and you hear Sharon saying, "I did one flub but I don't remember where," we both yell "SHIT SHARON, GET IT TOGETHER!" This song followed me around all summer and I still listen to it all the time. It just sticks with me. |
CocoRosie – Sunshine Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I love this song... it's like a bittersweet childhood flashback. Loneliness and longing for friendship even if it's only based on one's possessions- I remember that well! Although Mac Davis does have a song called Sunshine, this is not it. The credit given to him up there is mistaken, I'm pretty sure. |
Soap&Skin – Vater Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I love this song. So raw, open, heartfelt... Really gritty lyrics, so many conflicting feelings, the description of the process of a body's decay... I have an elementary understanding of German grammar and basic vocabulary, so armed with that and online dictionaries, I've conjured the following translation. Know that its accuracy is unreliable at best! All the clocks stop and the dog there stops barking at its bicycle Whenever I open up, I find you You fall into the shadow of day as silence and stitches I toast dozens of wine bottles to you and would much rather be a maggot The coffin collapses, the flowers fall into the cheeks First white, then blue, then grey, then green then foam, then brown and leaves and dust Please blow out of my head, out of my house How else can I think of the horror? With what heart, with what body out? Out Whenever I open up, I find you You fall into the shadows of day as silence and stitches I’m waiting for you, when are you coming back home? I would never wish to be a maggot to be a maggot Let me in, in, to be bone-hard as you are let me into your eyes I want to see it, to pass the test without agony, without agony let me in, you stone Of all the things in the world that you hold in love I smash [them] and [even] my own sky so that it may collapse under you and you fall over (really not sure if I got this right) and you endlessly reappear. |
Joe Cocker – I Shall Be Released Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I absolutely love Cocker's rendition of this song. So much soul. |
Soap&Skin – Marche Funèbre Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I think she's saying "break the wall," not "rank the wall." I think she's talking about how, although the custom of altruism typically propagated by western culture begs us to be open and share ourselves with others very openly, she's saying that we should "grow tall skin," or rather a protective barrier around ourselves, allowing in only the precious few that have proven worthy of our trust, because "bad weeds grow tall." Dark and brooding, but I love this one- especially the "Yrasor" version of the song found on the Marche Funèbre EP. |
Soap&Skin – Extinguish Me Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This song has some of the most gorgeous arrangements of the album, although some of the most tragic lyrics. |
Kate Bush – Among Angels Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Can't believe this doesn't have any comments yet! I've only listened to the album a little since I just got it last night, but I think this is my very favorite off of the album. Listening to it is just a state of blissful heaven. |
CocoRosie – Milkman Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Heartbreakingly beautiful. You know, when CocoRosie does a song that is less experimental/out there and more emotionally accessible, it is REALLY accessible. Songs like this, Werewolf and South 2nd pack in such a hard punch. Wonderful stuff. |
Björk – Cvalda (feat. Catherine Deneuve) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Dancer in the Dark is my favorite film of all time. This song is so joyous, youthful and invigorating. This is the only song on the soundtrack that I had to allow some time to grow on me... but I do so love it now, especially its sequence in the film. n_n |
CocoRosie – Raphael Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Well, I think Bianca is attracted to both women and men, though I don't know for certain, and I feel no obligation to place a label on her. I think Raphael's thighs are described as watery because they're doing it in a swimming pool. I basically interpret this as a song about a girl who has been very broken by a childhood loneliness and a dysfunctional family who tries to escape this life of sadness by going to a boy who will give her love and happiness and giving him sex, but instead he just basically takes advantage of her and hurts her further. I feel like the opening lines describing a house with clean bedsheets and all of that refers to childhood expectations of finding one partner and having a happy home together, because many songs in this album criticize that idea so profoundly engrained in our culture. She could be saying that she is a lesbian, saying that she had "dreams of warm breasts" and so on, but she tried having relationships with men in her adolescence because she had been taught that would bring her happiness and everything, but she just got taken advantage of. I dunno. The main point is that I think this song is about being vulnerable to someone, and opening yourself up to them to give them your honest love, and they take it and stomp on it. |
Amiina – Hilli (At The Top Of The World) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I got all misty-eyed the first time I saw this video. This is one of my favorite songs by amiina, the poem is beautiful, and the video is just the perfect combination of both. So much loveliness. |
The Sugarcubes – Walkabout Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Actually, I think golden landscape refers to a body with tan skin, or any skin tone comparable to gold. I am sorry it's taken seven years for someone to answer your question. |
Amiina – Hilli Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This is one of my favorite songs by Amiina. I can only listen to it during the winter though for some reason, specifically from mid-December to mid-January. I don't know what it is about the song that makes me feel like it's perfect exclusively for that season. I love the video version accompanied with the poem as well. So beautiful and pure. |
Amiina – Ugla Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Clever play on words here, though I'm not sure what the intended meaning could be. "Rugla" means confused," so "ég er ugla" has the potential of being misheard as "ég er rugla," meaning "I am confused" as opposed to "I am an owl." Thus rendering the meaning to "I'm a confused, a confused summer" or something to that effect. I don't speak Icelandic too well, so I can't be sure. Such a peaceful song to play on a summer night, though. |
Björk – Next to Last Song Lyrics | 12 years ago |
They say that true art must have the potential to stir up a feeling of upset. I think Lady Gaga may have tweeted this quote at some point, but I think she did that because she's pretentious and wanted an excuse for her heinous meat dress. This is beside the point, though. After I saw Dancer in the Dark, I sat still in my chair for quite some time, and then rushed downstairs and proceeded to summarize the entire plot of the film from beginning to end. Talking to my living, happy, healthy mother after it was somehow therapeutic. I then proceeded to show it to six friends over the following year. Simply put, no film I've seen in my life has impacted me as profoundly and irreversibly as Dancer in the Dark. At the beginning of the movie, the shaky cameras, unscripted feel of the dialogue and notably slow-paced sequences do not prepare you for the high-caliber cinematic gold that is Dancer in the Dark. I don't know if perhaps Lars Von Trier was intentionally being more conservative with the budget at the beginning of film, perhaps had less budget available for the earlier scenes, or perhaps wanted to make the opening scenes have a more mundane, everyday-life feel that later transform into a cinematic musical feel. Basically, even though there are things at the beginning that bother me (abrupt cuts, a few awkward scenes, a few arbitrary scenes, etc.) I feel this film in cinematic perfection. It's just so real that when it becomes a movie, you're already delved so deep into the reality of it all that the latter half of the film is petrifying. And this brings me to this song. I don't think of it as a sad song, necessarily. I don't like depressing or tragic stories unless they pave the way to light and hope, because light is borne from darkness. I love that about this film. This song is one of hope. Selma gets that message of hope and love out there just before her time is cut off. And the musical goes on forever. It's only the last song if we let it be. |
Björk – Mother Heroic Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I absolutely love this song. I kind of think either this song on Generous Palmstroke deserved to be on Vespertine and not made into b-sides- perhaps even in place of Heirloom. I like Heirloom, but I don't feel like it fits with the rest of the album as well as these two songs. Anyway, this song is beautiful and deeply spiritual to me. I see it as a hymn to the Earth, anthropomorphized slightly as though she were singing to Gaia, to an Earth spirit or to an Oversoul. Simple, gorgeous, delicate and resonant. |
Björk – Crystalline Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Ok, really? The accurate lyrics are on the app. There shouldn't be this much dispute and inaccuracy. imbipolar is right. But "dovetail our generosity?" What would that even mean? It's "daft till our generosity," as if to say "We clumsily mimic the openness of the ones we love until our own generosity equalizes the flow of love." And it's "pipes of an organ," not "pipes up an organ." Now that that's out of the way, I really love this song. I look forward to hear the remastered version that will come with the album's release this October. The song is just so high-energy, gets me all excited and jittery, and I found the meaning to be profoundly beautiful once it fully dawned on me and blossomed in my mind. |
