Sorry that i'm a hopless romantic. But i simply won't buy the idea of this simply is about the first sex experience.. Ofcause, directly this is about an act of sex. But i believe this is about the first time he is in love.. The french, in a mythical way, have always been a reference to romance and sex. No country does it better than, Le France.. And when he says "When I left her skin, Springtime bleeds in Paris". Metaphorical, this is about his first love, leaving him. Springtime bleeds in Paris - he is very hurted and very sad and, but nevertheless, he wouldn't be without this experience. Perhaps more of you have tried to loose your first real big love-of-your-life, it's certainly not nice. |

I agree in the general opinion that this is about the bloody sunday massacre... But this has also strong tieds to the conflict troughout history... like: "the trench is dug withim our hearts" saying that this leads many more years back.. Way before the bloody sunday massacre.. There have been nummerous events troughout history, with LOTS of casualties and massacres. And indirectly saying that this is a two-sided war. Between protestants and catholics: "the real battle just begun. To claim victory jesus won" - the same character builded around two religions, not just one of them.. Both sides have contributed, but ofcause shouldn't the brits have invated ireland in the first place many hundred years back..

First of all... Great song.
I've noticed how clever everyone seems to be about the author of this song, but my believe in Johnny Cash is that he wouldn't have sung this without him being able to relate or support the meaning of this song. I believe that one of the themes of this song could be a critic of the classic genderroles in the society, with only the mother to support the children, while the father go to work... Yeah you know what i mean.. perhaps Johnny wanted both a devoted father and a mother. Not just one of them.. Well, only my thoughts.. |
