Michael's lyrics and singing on this are AMAZING! I think its possibly about friendship between celebrities - how they understand each other's situations in terms of being a celebrity.
And by the way, Maria Callas is an opera singer who Patti Smith said she wanted to sing like.
And that 'weird organ synth' is in fact and e-bow, hence the name of the song. |

| R.E.M. – So Fast, So Numb Lyrics

one of the best on this album. I think its about friends who use drugs heavily to the point where that's all they care about, they're numb to everything else. Kill Devil Hill is where the Wright brothers first got a plane of the ground which is a metaphor for being high.
Sometimes, instead of "it's all amphetamine" i hear "its so unfair to me" though either of those lines work but i would say that instead of "you spit it out, the bitter pill" its actually "i'm spitting out the bitter pill." |

an alien abduction? weird... i think its about celebrities, putting yourself in the position of a celebrity, or someone treating you like their 'star' though the last few lines are a bit confusing |

unbelievably good lyrics, possibly Eddie's best ever lyric. |

ok, we all know what it means. I just wanna say that this is what pop music should be. On the surface, its just a great melody that you can dance to but underneath it tackles real issues and real feelings. And Eddie's voice makes it so good! |

hmm, i don't think this has anything to do with relationships, i think its about scottish culture and how its getting lost in modern society because ppl aren't staying true to their national identity. Roddy wants things to stay the same but people are changing. |

I've got a Hum bootleg of a show on the Downward is Heavenward tour and Matt speaks a little before this song and says that's it about how much he misses his wife when he goes on tour but he used the metaphor of an astronaut going into space to show how far away he felt. |

really touching lyric, reminds me a bit of 'Try Not to Breathe' by REM where the character in the song is an old man wanting his life to end so all thats left are good memories but this one adds the theme of companionship. I've always been fascinated with relationships that last for a long time and I'm surprised more bands don't write about it. Saying that, I don't many other bands could top this. |

This song makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time. As far as the meaning goes, I think its a love song (I think all the songs on YPAA are love songs, thats why it has a picture of Matt's wife in the sleeve). Basically, I think its about being in love with this girl but thinking that the girl is somehow too good for him, that's why I think the use of "a MILLION ways to feel no pain" in the first verse and then "a BILLION ways to feel no pain" in the second verse is so clever. |

hmm, I'd go with the guy/girl thing because being in that kind of situation is lonely and thats the major theme of the album, hence the title The Joshua Tree - the joshua tree is a tree that stands completely alone in a desert in north america. Best song ever. |

Billy said once that this song was a comparison between love and opium - the fact that they both lull you into a false sense of security but in reality, they can betray your true feelings. I don't know...
Anyway, this is an amazing song
So let the sadness come again
On that you can depend on me, yeah
Until the bitter bitter end of the world, yeah
When god sleeps in bliss
di-dow di-dwo doo da da da doo!!! lol! |

| Manic Street Preachers – Motorcycle Emptiness Lyrics

Its about loneliness and alienation as a result of our culture. In Blackwood when the four of them were teenagers, every other teenager had a motorcycle and they wre accepted because of this but the Manics, and some others, could not afford it because their father's were miners, and they were teenagers at the time of the miners strike. So, they're saying that because of their social position, they became lonely, alienated outcasts of their community. |

This song is not only a biopic of how women are treated but also a metaphor of how men with feminine traits are viewed. This especially applies to Richey and Nicky with all the dress that they wore etc. The fact that Richey was anorexic in itself is a feminine trait. Self abuse is considered feminine, and abuse of others out of pity for yourself is considered masculine.
The line "you are pure, you are snow" is especially intersting. Richey always seemed to view snow as perfection or purity (see 4st 7lb "I want to walk in the snow and not soil its purity") but in this case, it refers to the masculine side. So he's saying that society views this as perfection for a male and the rest are condemned to a life of being "useless sluts" despite the fact that he holds this in much higher esteem.
By the way, "culture, alienation, boredom and despair" according to Richey was the central theme for every Manics song, their actions and their reasons for creating art. It was the original working title for Generation Terrorists but the record company said it was too depressing and not PC, preferring Generation Terrorists. And lets be perfectly honest, that's not really PC either!!! |

well, Nicky wrote the lyrics so I doubt it's about a relationship James was in. I think its about the way modern society depresses the adult and makes them long for their youth - all the stay young adverts and stuff. I think Nicky is trying to say thats something that developed with his generation - "the gap our parents never had."
The chorus in particular evokes a feeling that true happiness is behind them "in the beginning...when our smiles were genuine."
This was always a big issue for the Manics. Nicky said that all four of them had a "blissful childhood" and Richey once said "my life was perfect up until I was 10."
Nicky said that TIMTTMY was the first ever "Welsh folk album" but this is probably the song on that album with the least Welsh identity. Especially in the line "the world is full of refugees, just like you and just like me."
Beautiful song. |

Zed92uk is right, i autobiographical. When he was admitted to the Priory, Richey was a llowed to decorate his room and, in typical fashion, it was a collage of different images from loads of different sources. But probably the most important images he stuck up were that of three supermodels, Kate Moss Kristin something and Kate something else (Kit Kat) sorry, i forget the surnames. The band always said it was written from the perspective of the girl in the BBC documentary but that's kinda hard to believe when you read into it and the imagery seems so personal. "Mother tries to choke me with roast beef and sits savouring her sole ryvitta, that's the way you're built my father said."
Also, 4st 7lb is the lowest a fully grown male can survive at. If a male slips below this weight, he will die almost instantly. That also points to the fact that it isn't written about a girl. |

"temporaryism has been the black plague and the Jesus of our age" When Jesus was supposedly alive, news of him spread really quickly and caught on, like the black plague. Brandon's saying that temporaryism has engulfed almost everyone and therefore affects the society and culture of our time.
"women's intuition..." could it be the fact that the feminine side of us doesn't succumb to this temporaryism as its deeper and more dependant on emotions, maybe the masculine side is so shallow that it is completely taken over by temporaryism. Or maybe Brandon just thought it sounded cool! |

At LiveAid, Bono did a huge speech over The Edge's opening riff. He said he the song was about "a friend of mine in Dublin who, on his 21st birthday, was given enough heroin to kill him." So the song is kinda sung in regret to how Bono, his friend, could let something like this happen. |
