It's sad how everyone jumped on this song just to insult it.

As Cities Burn – Empire Lyrics 14 years ago
I always thought he was talking about himself in this song, and I always thought by him saying "I was a pharisee" that he was saying he was a bad person, but a sermon I heard recently totally made me figure this song out.
In short the song is about measuring your spiritual relationship with Jesus in "Stats" like in sports. (5 home-runs, ect). It's about how we sometimes think: "I'm/he's a better Christian because I/he read the bible everyday, and pray before every meal." This is all coming from Phillipians 3:2 - 14. The part that caught me was that there is a part in the text that sounds EXACTLY like a part in the song. "I have more... in regard to the law, a Pharisee."

Overall this song just got 10x cooler to me.

Emery – I'm Not Here for Rage, I'm Here for Revenge Lyrics 14 years ago
Toby Morrell was interviewed by Alt Press. Here's what he said about this song:

"This song is really fun. I love the chugging guitars in the verses and the chorus is one of the best on the album. It’s a classic Emery broken-heart song laced with anger. I have so many of these stories from my past and it always seems to come up in at least a song or two on every album. I like writing about this subject because I feel everyone can relate, but also many times I can get some things off my chest that have bothered me from non-romantic relationships. This way I don't have to be so personal or hurt someone I wouldn't want to. It's a little sneaky, but it works for me. The other cool thing about this song is our good friend J.B. [Brubaker] from August Burns Red wrote the guitar part at the end which sounds so cool."

Errr. I was off. Here's an interview with Toby Morrell about this song:

"This song is just tough all the way around. There are some really cool breakdowns, an awesome hook for the chorus and it even has horns in the bridge that help create a classic Mexican-music feel. This song is about my struggle with trying to be in control and to be the god of my own life. It is hard to trust anyone else when you fell like you've got it all under control."

Emery – The Curse of Perfect Days Lyrics 14 years ago
Alternative Press interviewed Toby Morrell from Emery about each song. He said this song is about a dream he was having about his wife. Here's the interview:

"This song is one of my favorites. I love the way it starts so simply and then turns into a great rock song. It contains one of my favorite screaming parts on the album–the middle screaming part that is basically a second verse. It really reminds me of Stretch Arm Strong, and I like how tough but scared it sounds. This song is based on dream I had about my wife having cancer and dying."

Emery – The Anchors Lyrics 14 years ago
Alt Press interviewed Toby Morrel from Emery about each of the song's meanings. Here what he said about The Anchors:

"This was a tough song for me to write lyrically. It's a very personal story from my past. When I was in elementary school, a girl who liked me and her friend were making fun of me because that's what you do when you like someone. But I didn't see it that way and said something pretty terrible to the girl–something I couldn't take back–and those words have haunted me for years. I felt like I changed that day and saw the world differently. I feel like this song was a little cathartic, and it helped me face some things about myself and realize I was a kid and never intended to hurt someone the way that I did."

Emery – The Cheval Glass Lyrics 14 years ago
Alt Press interviewed Toby Morrel from Emery about each of the song's meanings. Here what he said about the Cheval Glass:

"This song is about who we see in the mirror, and more specifically, whoI think I am versus the person I actually became. It’s easy to see yourself as good, noble, selfless or even truly honest, but it’s a lot harder to see the negative things in our lives that need to be looked at more deeply. I feel like the world is always teaching us to stay away from the big, bad things, but never helps us to see those little things that plague us all: small lies, gossip, second looks and most of all pride are many times never addressed and end up making us callous and focused on ourselves rather than living an open life where we can learn about our true selves from honest interaction with others. On a side note, this song is the heaviest Emery song ever. I screamed my head off over some killer breakdowns."

Emery – Scissors Lyrics 14 years ago
Hey! I found an interview and I was off about the meaning, but I got a few parts right. Emery was interview by Alternative Press, and when asked about this song he said:

"This song has it all. It starts so heavy and then comes in with a really catchy melody that I feel our band are known for. The story here is basically a guy finding out he's going to die and somewhat questions his beliefs. So many people struggle with death and God. That's natural and a way to actually come to a conclusion about what you really believe. Is your God big enough to help you when all seems lost? What or who do you trust and what actually happens in the end? It's a tough subject that can't be answered in one song, but I wrote this in order to call myself out, face my own insecurities and find where my strength lies."

Emery – You Wanted It Lyrics 14 years ago
Hmmm. This song is kind of tough. As this album is supposed to be VERY spiritual based I'm going to take a long shot on this one.

This sounds like it's about people who think that forgiveness means they can sin (if God will forgive then why bother doing good). So as it lists things the devoted sinner "Wanted" ("What God became, you wanted it" referencing how God changed after Jesus came and was less wrathful because of forgiveness) but the "one thing [they'll] never get" is the word of God saying they CAN sin. This person defends themself by saying it's just their nature to sin ("You blamed it on your chemistry") but in the end sin is against God. Sin is coming to God and saying that you're in charge, not him ("Long live the new king!
I am the new King!").

Some other stuff I picked up on was:

"Run you coward, you run
These words crippled my confidence
The hymn I can't escape from
This is over and done with"

I'm sure this verse is describing running from God and the existence of sin. Trust me, I've got through this before. The feeling when you hear a hymm or a worship song really gets to you. Gives you a feeling of hate.

"I created everything here that I wanted to see"

Goes along with what I was saying. Making up your own rules rather than what the bible says.

So yeah, that's my opinion. What do you guys think?

Anberlin – Depraved Lyrics 14 years ago
The lead singer actually explained what this song is about in an interview.
Here's what he said:

"I'm so intrigued by conspiracy theories. I'm not a believer in them but I read them methodically because I think they're this cusp of reality that I can't grasp, that I can't relate to, and so it was kind of like the lyrics of the song were about conspiracy theorists and those who buy into Obama as the anti-christ. [It feels like those people] are slaves to this alternate thinking, and it's bound to destroy them. It's just bound to negate anything they've ever said as truth, and so that's what the song's about."

Underoath – A Moment Suspended in Time Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is about the end of the world as I've gathered. The line "It's so funny how we see things so clear when we have no time left to live" is talking about how we'll think we were so stupid for paying attention to stupid things like money and such. Overall great song.

Why did you attach it all together with no spaces? I think this needs a lyric fix.

Project 86 – From December Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm pretty sure that this is a song about someone who died be it a lover or a relative. AS for "You always were there to rescue me from December," I think that means that this person always was someone to talk to when it was cold and there was nothing to do. The song shows the Christian sign of losing someone by say "I wonder if you'll look the same when you embrace me on that day," as in referring to heaven. Awesome song.

Project 86 – Evil (A Chorus of Resistance) Lyrics 14 years ago
In an interview the lead singer of Project 86 explained the meaning of this song. Everyone has a hole in their heart that they must fill, Christian fill it with God and Jesus, but when people don't believe in Christ then they are left empty. When empty they desire to look for what can fill ("Deep in the recess of every man is a thief, a robber, a criminal") the hole in their heart and thus greed and lust.

The Myriad – You Waste Time Like A Grandfather Clock Lyrics 14 years ago
After looking at this song a bit I think it is about blaming God for tragedy. The bridge is basically saying that if God did change his plan and keep the tragedy from happening would it really be a good thing? God had a plan that leads to the common good in the end.

@silversara36 and PairOFish
This band IS Christian, the band has said it before. But that DOESN'T mean they can't write relationship style songs (Emery does it, Anberlin does it, Switchfoot does it, Thousand Foot Krutch does it). I'm pretty sure this is a sad song about admiring a girl but not knowing if she admires you back. In the bridge basically it's saying she doesn't.

Emery – Scissors Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know if I'm right, but this song kind of seems to be written from the perspective of someone who, when coming to believe in Christ, thought God wouldn't let any form of tragedy get him/her, and he/she got proven wrong.... I could also see the person blaming God for whatever happened. I don't know, this is just my opinion. Anyone got something better?
(BTW, first comment, YES!!)

Emery – The Cheval Glass Lyrics 14 years ago
The band Emery said this album is supposed to be the most spiritually themed of all of them, but I don't know if that includes this song.
This song seems rather relationship themed (especially from lines like "But your lipstick and cheap skirts"), like a lot of Emery's previous stuff (A Sin to Hold On To, Don't Bore Us Get to the Chorus, ect.). After that I draw a blank.

People can get ideas for deep songs while watching a movie, it doesn't mean the movie influenced the song.

Thousand Foot Krutch – E For Extinction Lyrics 14 years ago
When I looked at this song I kinda came to the conclusion it's about Christians. They (we) blend into community as normal people ("When we move; We camouflage ourselves; We stand in the shadows waiting") and basically they're ready to convert others, that's what we were make for by God. Overall one of my favorite songs off the album.
