The Cheval Glass Lyrics
Turn the cheval glass and find
Corruption under my skin
And mind
You're so far from safety
Put your fingers to your eyes
And steal yourself away
Repetition
It will not be satisfied
You cannot accomplish this
You cannot be satisfied
The worst isn't ever the curse of the cleverest lines
Sang the song of never, never
Believed that you meant it this time
It's time to back all your big words
So come on now
But you're all lipstick and cheap skirts
You're the shining light until it hurts
Tonight I'll make this bleed
Light up the sky with my misdeeds
'Cause I hate this
I fell for the first time
Fall was upon us
With all the leaves turning
You were so sure of yourself
You were asking me questions
Of us getting older
You hardly could catch your breath
I wanted anything else
And I've asked
For the after remorse
To stay
And still these hands
But it never takes
Never takes
Old habits are so hard to break
So you fall
And circle through
Your life
That can't be seen
Avoid the brilliant
Lights that find you
Because when they do
You know you'll have to
It's time to back all your big words
So come on now
But you're all lipstick and cheap skirts
You're the shining light until it hurts
Tonight I'll make this bleed
Light up the sky with my misdeeds
'Cause I hate this
I fell for the first time
There's not enough wisdom or perception
judge this now
Take back your life
You are dying and the time you spent was wasted
On all the sick drams of the lie
The lie
Pull yourself out
Made yourself in your own image
The praise you gave thousands of times
Lifted yourself up to the sky
The sky
Bow before all that you've done
Corruption under my skin
And mind
You're so far from safety
Put your fingers to your eyes
And steal yourself away
It will not be satisfied

Alt Press interviewed Toby Morrel from Emery about each of the song's meanings. Here what he said about the Cheval Glass:
"This song is about who we see in the mirror, and more specifically, whoI think I am versus the person I actually became. It’s easy to see yourself as good, noble, selfless or even truly honest, but it’s a lot harder to see the negative things in our lives that need to be looked at more deeply. I feel like the world is always teaching us to stay away from the big, bad things, but never helps us to see those little things that plague us all: small lies, gossip, second looks and most of all pride are many times never addressed and end up making us callous and focused on ourselves rather than living an open life where we can learn about our true selves from honest interaction with others. On a side note, this song is the heaviest Emery song ever. I screamed my head off over some killer breakdowns."

How has nobody commented on this yet? Such a good song.
This site seems so dead lately. :/
just saw them live last night!! amazing song =)
I feel like this song is talking about somebody who praises themselves and rejects God. "It's time to back all your big words So come on now, come on now But your all lipstick and cheap skirts" They talk big about themselves and big about God not being real but they don't have anything to back that up expect themselves. Postmodernism?
Then the last breakdown is just awesome. "There is not enough wisdom or perception, etc." There is no way to scientific way to disprove God and we are all dying and to not accept God is a waste. It's a waste on the lie that you are the only person that matters. All the praise that "lifted yourself up to the sky" was pointless.
"Bow before all that you've done." You haven't really done anything if all that you care about is yourself.
Stoked for the new album! 8 days!
I kind of feel the opposite. It seems more about someone who DOES believe in God, but what have they done with that belief? A belief in a loving God, but with actions that are purely for self-gratification? I think it speaks volumes about the Church and how it's become something we do to make ourselves feel better about ourselves, rather than to show the only thing Jesus ever preached; Love. To me, it seems "the lie" is more of the thought that this is the only way to live, by the "laws" taught to us when we were young....

To me, it seems "the lie" is more of the thought that this is the only way to live, by the "laws" taught to us when we were young. We're taught that God loves us all, but we don't show that love. We show judgement. Kind of a "Look at all 'good' things I do, and look at all the 'bad' thing you do" mentality. That same mentality that has gotten the Church to where it is today, thought badly of and attacked by those people that Jesus taught us to love. It seemed to me to be the story of someone, not necessarily turning their back on the church, but more on the teachings that have been twisted for self gratification,
Of course, this is just my opinion, and what I got out of it. It's art, and it's interpretation is solely based on the individual perspective. Never the less, it's an amazing song, and they're are truly a talented group of guys.
The band Emery said this album is supposed to be the most spiritually themed of all of them, but I don't know if that includes this song. This song seems rather relationship themed (especially from lines like "But your lipstick and cheap skirts"), like a lot of Emery's previous stuff (A Sin to Hold On To, Don't Bore Us Get to the Chorus, ect.). After that I draw a blank.

I'd just like to post some edits to the lyrics. Don't know how to do that really.
In the third line, the word is "mind," not "mine." In the second stanza, the word "repetition" is repeated (either type it twice or put a x2 by it) Same with "You cannot be satisfied" Also, "cannot" is one word. ;) /grammarnerd The chorus needs to be marked. And then there needs to be a (Chorus) marker after "You know you'll have to" The last stanza has plenty of things that are repeated but not marked. It would be more accurate if it were spelled out for the readers.
On another note, this song seems extremely theological to me. It seems like the lyrics are about the little things that separate us from God, particularly vanity/pride. The last stanza seems to be a warning to the subject to pull him or herself out of the lie that s/he created. That "lie" is that the person seems to have declared him or herself as a god and given praise to the cheval glass (a stand-mirror) as a reflection of their being a god. In short, don't worship your own ego.
I fixed the lyrics.
