Clutch – 7 Jam Lyrics 13 years ago
"Old Ship of Zion" is a hymn that was written circa 1889. "7 Jam" seems to be heavily based upon it. Here are the lyrics to it:

I was standing by the banks of a river
Looking out over lifes troubled seas
When I saw an old ship that was sailing
Is that the old ship of Zion I see

It's hull was bent and battered
From the storms of life I could see
Waves were rough but that old ship kept sailing
Is that the old ship of Zion I see

At the stern of the ship was the captain
I could hear as he called out my name
Get on board It's the old ship of Zion
It will never pass this way again

As I step on board I'll be leaving
All my troubles and trials behind
I'll be safe with Jesus the captain
Sailing out on the old ship of Zion

Clutch – Eight Times Over Miss October Lyrics 13 years ago
Yeah this is just a rich embellishment of an experience that Neil had as a kid. Neil typically embellishes history (and not his own personal experiences) for Clutch's songs (see Soapmakers, Elephant Riders, and I have the Body of John Wilkes Booth). At any rate, this song fuckin rocks.

My vote is "The House that Peterbilt".

Clutch – Ghost Lyrics 13 years ago
Since Blast Tyrant is a concept album I'd buy that this song ties to "The Regulator." I wouldn't call it a prequel/sequel though. It ties to "The Regulator" in the same way that Big News I, II, and III all tie together.

As far as story and imagery are concerned, the above two posts have it nailed down pretty well.

I'd say he's just raggin' on the "ideal" suburban lifestyle. Clutch has done this in other songs, namely "Let A Poor Man Be," and "Opossum Minister."

Clutch – Juggernaut Lyrics 13 years ago
The song is definitely referencing "Brave New World, " by Aldous Huxley. In the book, all classic religion and spirituality is absolved and Henry Ford is elevated to the status of a deity, as a model of productivity and efficiency. As part of the social restructuring in the book, monogamy is no longer allowed; rather, frequent one night stands are expected social behavior. The Solidarity Services are weekly compulsory meetings where men and women are encouraged to mingle and hook up. Hence the lines:

"Orgy-Porgy, Ford and fun
Kiss the girls and make them One.
Boys at one with girls at peace;
Orgy-Porgy gives release."*

Clutch – Let a Poor Man Be Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is lamenting the homogeneous state and strict rules of suburbia. Columbia, Maryland is a town near where the band is from. It is generally considered the first fully planned community in the country (other than Levittowns, which were just housing developments). The singer states that he wants a "castle" that is eccentrically designed and where "none of your business is hangin' around."

Also, a quote from Neil: "In the early 1980s' my family lived in a typically terrible pre-planned suburban development called Montgomery Village.

Sounds to me like an attack on religious legalism and corruption. There's a few lines that seem reminiscent of the story of Jesus casting the money changers out of the temple (Matthew 21:12).

Also, the Sun, Moon, and Seven Stars (the pleiades) are a very basic part of Masonic symbolism ( which explains the lines "A maverick moonminer sipping sunshine" and "I'll take ya back, west of Pleiades.". And we all know how Neil loves to mention Freemasons and all the other secret societies.

Clutch – Raised By Horses Lyrics 13 years ago
I saw an interview once where Neil stated that in the early days of Clutch "we used record labels more than they used us." This occurred because in the early '90s all the record labels were dropping their "hair bands" and picking up new styles of music (grunge or similar). As one record executive said according to Neil, "Well, these guys don't look like a hair band; let's give them a chance."

I'm not saying that this is exactly what the song is about, but that is what the song makes me think of.

Clutch – Smoke Banshee Lyrics 13 years ago
"Pour the quick elixir in your wounds to ease the pain," could be a reference to Rosicrucianism. I say this because Neil Fallon has since made references to Rosicrucianism/Christian Rosenkreuz in at least a few other songs (in The Amazing Kreskinand and at least one other that I can't think of at the moment).

Clutch – Release The Kraken Lyrics 13 years ago
Here's what I think happened. Neil and maybe some of the other guys from Clutch were sitting on a couch somewhere watching the original "Clash of the Titans" (ya know the one from the 70's with all the clay animation and terrible special effects) and getting all kinds of high. At that point, it probably occurred to them to write a song about it.

Clutch – Sinkemlow Lyrics 13 years ago
Sinkemlow (from Pure Rock Fury) and Sink 'Em Low (from Jam Room) are two different songs (although they are very similar). The lyrics listed here are for Sinkemlow (Pure Rock Fury). For some reason they remade several of the songs from Jam Room on later albums.

One Eye Dollar (redone on Beale Street)
I Send Pictures (became Sleestack Lightning on Strange Cousins)
Sinkemlow (became Sink 'Em Low on Pure Rock Fury)

Maybe they just weren't satisfied with the originals.

Clutch – Slow Hole to China Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song could be lamenting the excessive amount of jobs that get outsourced to China. I could be wrong but it kinda makes sense to me. Mining, specifically, is an industry that has been sent to China.

Then again it could just be a story about a miner who gets trapped and tries to dig himself out the other side (or a metaphor for a similar predicament).

Clutch – Smoke Banshee Lyrics 13 years ago
The only lines of this song that, to me, are apparently decipherable are:

"Trapped in sap, chambered in a tree
Shadow of a giant across the centuries"

These lines make me think of the scene in Jurassic Park where the scientists harvest dinosaur DNA by drilling it out of petrified mosquitoes that were trapped in sap. "Giant across the centuries" could plausibly refer to a dinosaur.

Yeah this is just a classic Clutch stoner jam (or I guess I should say THE classic Clutch stoner jam) with some trademark double entendre. This song was released in 1995, long before the mayan fairy tale about 2012 was a blip on anyone's radar. So if you think this song is about 2012 then you are a fucktard.

Clutch – When Vegans Attack Lyrics 13 years ago
FROM ABOVE:

"the self-congratulatory bullshit and peer-driven, angsty self righteousness of the professional protester are in full high-minded display here. miss neurotic is the epitome of what fallon described: too self righteous for her own good, too intent on justifying her own ideology with snide comments on a fucking music message board to realize that her earnestness for her 'cause' and her 'beliefs' is what makes people laugh at her. no one takes her seriously in real life and that has bled to this message board in the form of her over-dramatization of the effect this song has had on her. whoa is her. she's so persecuted. she's a victim. she demands an apology.

grow up. "

Clutch – Struck Down Lyrics 13 years ago
I always just took this song as being about a girl; I never even picked the parts about von Braun, and falling bombs.

"I've been torn asunder by the banshee's wail." I think this is the phrase that ties the heartbreak and the war scene together. The sound of a falling bomb could be described as sounding like a banshee's wail, and a crazy ex-girlfriend could certainly be described as a banshee (although I prefer "succubus").

I think the war imagery is not the focal point of the story, but rather, it is a metaphor for a bad breakup (or other experience) with a girl.

Excellent break down, ender1260!! Yeah i think Neil is just trying to poke fun at people (read -hipsters) who think they are being enlightened by drug use or getting into "religions their parents don't belong to" (see Stuff White People Like). This song is a lot like "When Vegans Attack." Obviously this one came first but ya know what i mean.

Clutch – The Amazing Kreskin Lyrics 13 years ago
This song really paints a bleak, distopian image; like many of the songs on this album. It gives the album a really cohesive feel.

I think LucesDarkness breaks it down pretty well. The reference to "Chemical Wedding" is key. Chemical Wedding is an alchemist manifesto.

Back in the Middle Ages up through the Renaissance people who played around in the field of alchemy were often persecuted and treated like witches or heretics(trying to manipulate matter was viewed as black magic by much of the clergy). They would often disguise their works as something benign to avoid persecution. "Chemical Wedding" is an example of that.

I think that Neil Fallon tries to continue a tradition of esotericism (just like that of "Chemical Wedding)in the songs of Clutch. How many times have you had to check Google or Wikipedia to figure out what the fuck Neil is referencing? By keeping the meanings of his songs cryptic and enigmatic he ensures that only the people who are really interested in understanding them can do so.

Clutch – The Elephant Riders Lyrics 13 years ago
The guys in Clutch lived in an old house near Harper's Ferry, WV when they recorded this album. Antietam creek(the namesake for the battle that was the bloodiest day of the civil war) and the C&O Canal are within minutes of where they lived.
Also, the album artwork contains photo-shopped pictures of a fictional civil war cavalry unit (the 414th Cavalry Division) who rode elephants rather than horses and fought at the Battle of Antietam.

This song is from the perspective of some folks who are traveling along the canal from some point west of Antietam toward Washington and witness this unreal scene. Elephant Riders could possibly mean Northern republicans (Lincoln is generally considered the first great Republican) fighting against the South, but I just don't look at this song as being political in any way. Rather I think this song is just a fun embellishment of some important Maryland and West Virginia history.

The Cliffside Inn is near Harper's Ferry, WV. The guys from Clutch lived in a really old house in the Eastern Panhandle of WV(near Harper's Ferry) while recording the Elephant Riders album.
I remember reading Neil's interactive journal that was included with the original Elephant Riders CD. In it Neil states that he imagined this scene one day while driving past the Cliffside Inn.

As far as the imagery is concerned, it's definitely vague. The Fight Club novel was released two years before Elephant Riders (the movie came out in 1999)was released so there's a possibility that Neil is referencing it. However, I think the "Chemical Wedding" theme is more likely, because Neil has sung about it since then as well (see "The Amazing Kreskin" on the "strange Cousins" album.

Clutch – What Would a Wookie Do? Lyrics 13 years ago
General Border is a character in the children's book "Drummer Hoff;" which, by the way, is fuckin trippy. I'm not really sure how that ties to the overall meaning of the song, though.

I think that this song is lamenting the way those in power exploit those beneath them within the contexts of religion and war. Come to think of it, that may be where the Drummer Hoff reference fits in (General Border gave the order and Drummer Hoff fired it off). The references to carpetbaggers, robber barons, and Hezbollah seem to support this.

The above lyrics are incorrect; it should be:

The Theocrats
with cricket bats
Hezbollot of love to give ya
never take it back

Clutch – Wicker Lyrics 13 years ago
I see this song as a bleak image of the cold war.

"What's inside the silo;
can it fly?
A needle in the haystack
To crack the sky

The feet of marching men
Beat down the fields of last chances
As scarecrows in amber waves of grain
Grin exchanging glances"

I think this is a depiction of "ancient" missiles sitting in silos in the Midwest.

What a hilarious satire of religious bickering. I saw Neil Fallon say in an interview once as soon as you get "red-faced" in a debate of politics or religion there's no longer any value in the debate; it's just an argument. Obviously that's correct, and it's something more people need to have the maturity to realize. Just go look at the discussion for "When Vegans Attack." Neil often uses humor like this to keep things lighthearted while still discussing philosophical shit. Personally, I don't think it's a band's job to preach; it's their job to entertain me. And that is why I love Clutch.

Clutch – Hale Bopp Blues Lyrics 13 years ago
Yeah you got it mostly right BoxyBrown26. This song is about historical occurrences of the Haley's/Hale-Bopp comet, and how it always seems to bring death when it passes near our planet:

Some theorize that the dinosaurs were killed off by a comet or meteorite. Could have been Hale-Bopp.

At the time of Jesus birth in Bethlehem the gospel of Matthew explains that King Herod had all the newborn baby boys killed because he was afraid of losing his throne to "he that is born King of the Jews. for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled."

The Heaven's Gate cult committed the largest mass suicide in US history when the Hale-Bopp comet passed by Earth in 1997. They believed that they would be carried away to a ship that was waiting for them on the other side of the moon.

This song was written shortly after the cult's mass suicide.

Also, the line is:

Oh mighty Nike
she took them away
on the wings of victory

Nike(or Athena to the Romans) was the Greek god of victory. Her wing is the logo used on Nike Shoes.
