I think this is an amazing album from beginning to end. It's almost a link between prog rock and new wave. I'd be curious to know what their influences were when they made this album.
The song could be interpreted many ways. It could be about overcoming dealing with the unseen force called narcissistic personality disorder. If one or both of your parents was narcissistic. A sibling grandparent Uncle cousin former friend, your boss,
But I think it has to do with overcoming a problem and being your natural self finding a natural solution.
What if you could go back in time and talk to your 18-year-old son self. Explain the challenges of life and how to overcome them. If you had really bad parents you could relate to the lyrics in this song.
It could also mean dealing with death. This song would be about your final words to the world. |

I love this song, beautiful solo by Alex. To me with all the shit and unhappiness life can bring. We in the moment can still hold on to some of the real things that really matter in life. Tending the garden - life needs constant maintenance. |

I still have to get out my dictionary sometimes with N. Pearts lyrics. To me its saying there is or could have been a better way. How can we call ourselves an intelligent species?
Just look at most of our ecosystem's. Is it blatant selfishness, corruption, and ignorance all around. Are we brainwashed to believe too? This type of control will/could have an eventual effect of devistation of life here on earth. Are you truly free? What do you lack .... |

I like Pearts multi-thematic message. Yes generally about the West and the Islamic Middle East. Or when you get a lot of crap talk from someone who is narrow minded, does not know the facts, very inflexible, and wrong. It's an A-holes defense mechanism. Like a pissing contest with a skunk, eh. |

It’s not about what you believe it’s about who you are as a good person. Nor is it about challenging what someone else believes or which is better. Be a good person first and the rest may take care of itself. |

I'm glad that Neil wrote lyrics about the issue of how we deal with those who have done us wrong -- and for thier own sake as I view things. That not only includes certian types of people but also groups of them; goverments, corporate owners, and all that serve for them. |

Dude he mentions seeds in this song, that's like cool, heh heh ! It's something about people behaving badly or something. Like in authority you know parents, teachers, bosses, elected officials, and owners of companies all just acting like total dorks. Tell them bad people to all just shut up and grow some seeds or wacth TV or something, yeah. |

"I've got my own moral compass to steer by"
Everyone has beliefs and that is good. Don't force your ideas on others, that is bad.
"Fools and thieves are dangerous
in the temple and marketplace"
"I will choose Freewill"

2112 one meaning. This is a streach but does it not ask the question of human evolution in the universe as we "don't" know it? Maybe a higher level of human being, our adult counterparts in another part of the universe? Since we live at - the ass end - on a planet run by "children" acting like apes to our mother earth ? |

Neil writes so with many common threads, multi-leveled,and semi-thematically, as usual. The two previous comments here sum up this great rocking song so eloquently. I can’t wait to see the second leg of the Time Machine Tour and the DVD likely to come out later. The band is planning to film it in Cleveland (as most of you know) and the first DVD filmed in the USA. Cleveland is where they got their big break and ironically the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of -facade. I’m from that region of the country originally (Youngstown, Oh) and those fans are always really fired up for RUSH !Also I love the seemingly histornic hard rocking aspect and the interesting rhythm section in the later half of this one too! What an awesome and entertaining band.

Neil usually writes with multi-thematic themes. One way to look at this song is it's about pleasure and how pleasure can makes us feel so great but it can also trap you too if your not careful. |

Besides some of these other great comments. This song may also include the three band members and how they interact. Neil is the mind (Wisdom), Alex the Body (Love), and Geddy the Heart (Balance). All are equal parts and this theme is repeated again over time see Presto with Paper, Rock, and Sissors. The number 3 and the balance theme are seen over and over with this awesome band.
