| John Denver – Looking for Space Lyrics

My favourite JD song. I love the acceptance in the song--that it is enough to enjoy the journey, and not to worry and over-analyze the reason or the end destination. "Be in the moment" is another way to say it.
A truly wonderful songwriter. |

I didn't understand the song as a kid. I thought some cruel person (the Dad in the song?) had taken the dog and dumped her, and then made up some story for his family about her 'swimming away'. It always made me cry. I feel so much better now I know the real story behind it, about a much loved pet and dealing with the loss. Still sad, but in a happy-sad kind of way. The love you have for a pet as a child stays with you.

This is a gorgeous song. I don't know much about her other work, but I found this on a compilation and fell in love with it. I think it is about wanting somebody very badly and just wishing they would lay down all their issues and just level with you. |

| Chris Rea – Fool (if You Think It's Over) Lyrics

That's nice that he wrote it for his sister.
I had a slightly different idea on it... I thought this teen girl was sitting in a bar, after having been
dumped by her boyfriend, in tears. This slightly older guy is offering to buy her a drink to cheer her up
and telling her she's got years ahead of her to worry about love. |

Yeah, I agree! Good interpretation. Nothing too complex, but very real feelings that most people could probably relate to at some time or other. Great song. |

| Bic Runga – Drive Lyrics

I think it is about a couple whose relationship is floundering, but she doesn't want to end it with him.
They've been out somewhere, maybe they had a fight or it just wasn't happening, and he's driving her home. But she's asking him to keep driving and not to drop her off yet. She's hoping to recapture some of that lost spark, even for a little while, or try to pretend it like it used to be. Bittersweet song, and so beautiful. The stark arrangement is perfect for the lyrics. |

I agree! The video shows them at the beach, too, I think. Nice song, though--very easy to listen to. |

| Laura Branigan – Self Control Lyrics

I think I read somewhere in an online interview with Laura Branigan that the song could be interpreted as being about a prostiute--a woman who works by night, sleeps by day, and is controlled by her pimp.
But when I fell in love with the song as a young teenager, I didn't see it quite like that. I thought it was more about a woman who lives for the night and the excitement of dressing up and being another person, and who feels lifeless in the light of the day. At some point she has met this guy who she can't stop thinking about--she feels herself losing control of her feelings to him. There is a kind of dangerous vibe in there, and I liked that the song was different to the typical 'girl meets boy, fall in love' type of song. Laura Branigan has the perfect voice for this song. Such a shame she died young. A great loss to music. |

| Boz Scaggs – We're All Alone Lyrics

I'm also surprised only one other person commented so far. This is my favourite by Boz Skaggs. I heard the Rita Coolidge version first, but I like his more. As far as I know, he was the original singer as he wrote the wong. Maybe it was an album track or maybe it was a single, but not such a big hit. Then Rita did a cover and it was a hit. I don't know if Boz then released his own version as a single based on that, or if people started paying attention to the original thanks to Rita. Regardless, it is a beautiful song.
I'm not sure I really understand the meaning. I was kind of hoping to see what other people think. I agree that the couple in the song have had ups and downs along the way. The song talks about 'once a story's told, it can't help but grow old, Roses do lovers too..." I talk this as meaning the couple have a long history together. He's saying it isn't perfect, but then nothing is. But he loves her and wants to be with her and asks her to be with him. I don't quite get the 'learn how to pretend' part. Is he asking her not to worry about things from the past that have troubled them, or which might not be quite how she likes it? Just to let it go, enjoy the time together and come to him... I take it that way.
A beautiful song in any way. |

| Benny Mardones – Into The Night Lyrics

This is one of my favourite songs ever. OK, she is 16 and for whatever reasons, his friends and family (and maybe her's too) are telling him to stay away. I would like to think that the guy in the song is about 19 or 20 so in that case there is no problem with the age thing. (Let's just forget what age Benny really was when he sang it!) If she is only 16 and in high school, maybe everyone thinks she is a bit young for this college or working guy so they are telling him to go find someone a little closer to his own age. It makes sense without being sick. (I have a 13 year old daughter. I don't think I'd want some guy of 20 dating her when she is 16, to be honest.) But since he is smitten with this beautiful girl, he can't get her off his mind and he fantasizes about being alone with her and carrying her off... Since it is just fantasy, it isn't a problem! (He is probably being responsible here--at least he isn't calling her cellphone and trying to convince her to sneak out when he parents aren't around.)
What I love is the gut-wrenching feeling his voice carries. I don't know how Benny can sing like that without damaging his vocal chords. He is just screaming raw passion by the end. He did a new version a few years ago and while it isn't quite so energetic, the passion is still there, so obviously he hasn't done himself any harm. |

| Dan Fogelberg – Missing You Lyrics

Nobody else commented yet? Dan might be better known for his sweet ballads and this is one of his more hard-edged songs. But the passion and the story are still there. It surely is based on his real life as a touring musician, staying in hotel rooms all around the country (and the world) and missing the love of his life. (Maybe written for his wife? I'd like to think so.) Although the tone of the song is melancholy and plainative, it is actually positive underneath, since he tells her that her love is what guides and keeps him going. I like to think that at the end of the tour he goes home and there she is, waiting. |

Such a beautiful song and what a storyteller he was. Dan left this world much too soon. He was immensely talented and every single one of his songs is a gem. This still brings tears to my eyes. |

That's a very nice analogy about this song and "Another Auld Lang Syne" by Dan Fodelburg. I love both songs, too. I don't know if Davis wrote his own songs, but Fodelberg did and he was immensely talented. Sad that both singers left this world fairly young. |

| England Dan & John Ford Coley – I'd Really Love To See You Tonight Lyrics

Yes, great song for a romantic night. I also think the couple in the song were in a relationship before, and for whatever reason, they broke up. But obviously they parted on good terms since he feels he
can call her up for a friendly chat. There must be some spark still there and he just wants to see her again, hang out and maybe see how things go. Nice and relaxed and the perfect easy listening love song.
And it should be "...warm wind blowing the stars around" in the chorus, I think. |

I agree with the other comments, too. This song certainly is sad and haunting. The idea of love grown old and the singer's appeal to his (still?) girlfriend to just come over and simply let him hold her... If I'm in a melancholy mood, this song can bring tears to my eyes. (One of his other huge hits, "I Go Crazy", has a similar theme, but in that song he has broken up with her and she has a new love. He meets her again after some time and realizes she still has his heart.) In "Cool Night", I like to imagine that she comes over and they get romantic by the fire and rekindle the flame they had! |

What a brilliant song. I was never a Cold Chisel fan per se. but this song has always been in my personal Top 10. The aching loneliness of love grown old and how it eats you up... just gut wrenching. |

| Laura Branigan – Show Me Heaven Lyrics

Yes, this is a lovely song and I think Laura's version is the best of any out there.
To me, the song is about the joy, uncertainty, fear and excitement as you move towards intimacy with that new love in your life. This emotion is rarely expressed in contemporary song. This song is honest with the mixed emotions that new love can bring, but ultimately it is uplifting as the singer invites her lover to show her heavan on earth.
Laura is probably better known for her powerhouse dance hits, but she was equally talented when it came to tender ballads. My favourite song of all by her is "All Night With Me", which I think was released before her breakthrough "Gloria". If you love "Show Me Heavan", then check out "All Night With Me", too.
Gone but not forgotten. Laura's music will always have a place in my heart. |

I love this song. It's been used in three movies I've seen, "Bucket List", "Everybody's Fine" and "Karate Kid" (the newest one). I finally downloaded it and now it is on heavy rote on my iPod. A simple song yet it has such a heavy message--say what you are thinking before it is too late. Better to get things out in the open if they are bothering you, rather than carrying the burden of frustration all your life. |

I also really love this song. It should have been a huge hit in my opinion. You can't hear it without getting wanting to get up and move. E G Daley just about sets the song on fire with the sheer energy in her voice.
