Belle & Sebastian – Simple Things Lyrics 14 years ago
I had a dream and there were blue veins! :O! As in she actually has a heart and isn't just a complaining bitch looking for an excuse to argue. He's in a world of his own and only wants to be bothered with her if she's willing to be "deep". "Deep" people would be able to understand when he says "subtle as the wind is grey".

I take this song as being really sad and uncomfortable because it's like poor young people. They never have good living conditions. Can't even pay their electric bill. They living in a "caravan"like house which, if you don't know, is a mobile home... Maybe they stay in the bath to keep warm and the girl is so small because she's starving maybe because she can't afford food!

That's part of the irony. No one would ever actually be able to host a cartoon show. And plus it's a mystery show where those kids have to go out and solve a mystery which he will not be doing. Basically if the person wants him then he can come and get him himself, he's not playing games with her. Nothing there to keep him.

Fantastic song! If you want me, I'll be here. Not playing hard to get with you. If you wanna play cat and mouse, well I'm the Garfield kind of cat...

Venice Is Sinking – undecided Lyrics 15 years ago
This is undoubtedly an ingenious song.
It's 2 people trying to get together the wrong way. One can't change, they're stuck in the past and the other one doesn't want to go on living in the present when the other is stuck in the past. So they're undecided. Stuck in neutral. Going nowhere with their relationship. Which will probably end unless someone moves.

Belle & Sebastian – The Loneliness of a Middle Distance Runner Lyrics 15 years ago
We question why we're even here. Is what we're doing really important in the big scheme of things? People pass you by but what is their motive? Do THEY even know? When it's over, then what? We like the stage, we've seen it now. Watching everyone else, kind of psychoanalyzing them.

Wait. I change my view again. The Middle Distance Runner is the unsavory part of this entire song. It's not finishing what we've (Americans) started and so we are not getting to the end point which is the happiness. What America is right now isn't going to get us there. We're not getting to sustainable internal happiness right now. Togetherness is happiness.

Wish there was a delete button on these.

I change my response. This is what America is. A middle distance runner. Not sustainable and they've forgotten that at the start, but if that's true, why aren't we just like China? Communists. Sounds sustainable. Maybe we'll "stop the race and look around, and like the 'stage' because they've seen it(the light/spotlight where they can shine) now." Our lesson to learn as a whole is to remember who we are, free and brave. Be brave enough to realize we don't have to do what it is we're doing right now. It is lonely but....

Yes the businessman is corporate America which wants to sell you as everything is alright but you really do have your own inner value.

Sufjan Stevens – Chicago Lyrics 15 years ago
He's basically just saying he tried to find his soul self no matter what lengths it took and that he's made alot of ego driven mistakes in his life. He wants to free himself from the ego driven world which is all in our heads. It's like a disease. Smart man.

Sufjan Stevens – Sister Lyrics 15 years ago
I believe this song symbolizes what daily life means in general.
The beginning guitar solo is distorted and out of tune and that's Sufjan saying I go through life imperfect and the voices that come in as the song progresses are happy but also out of tune symbolizing how people pretend that life is ok and happy whenever it's not. Their beliefs are imperfect and so is life but we pretend everything's ok. The distorted melody (Sufjan) progressively gets louder and more distorted as it becomes more and more apparent that we are all living our lives backwards, looking at life in a wrong light.
Then the distortion dissipates. Sufjan breathes and and calmly explains:
He sings about how simple the water is. All it wants is hurricanes and sailboats and land to run into and the sun to shine on it. Simple. Not expecting much out of life. (Keep in mind we all came from the sea, supposedly).
The fish stone is burning him to remind him he is still glad to be alive. Pain in life, whether physical or internal, is a constant reminder that you're still living and should be grateful. The burning symbolizes the deep longing for the other part of our soul that everyone has. Everyone is longing for that true soul love relationship, it's the internal burning in all of us, what makes us feel like we have a hole that needs to be filled with SOMETHING.
But what he, and all of us have, is a sister somewhere. He describes her vaguely because what she looks like isn't really the point, it's that he has one. We all have another half of our soul somewhere whether you know it or not or know what they look like (most don't). (This is how we and the water differ dramatically.) Our other half is like part of our childhood- we all come with one. He still has the teeth his mother kept when his fell out when he was little so that he could always remember his childhood.
Although he's a little broken like the distorted guitar solo, he says how he can do regular things like crochet and hit a kettle drum and such (trivial things that won't really matter all that much when you're gone), but there's more to life than what people are seeing. If you spent time with him, he would take out the kite he had since his childhood (the birth oh all humanity) and figuratively, "show you the sky" - the hope in life, the higher power, if you let him.

Basically, if you ever feel like you're the only one feeling lost and alone in a distorted life and feel that other people are cheerful and have it all figured out, you're wrong. You are never alone, someone in the world is just like you, and as long as you're alive, you can keep searching for your soul sibling or at least know that they're there with you in the spirit world.

To sum it all up, it's a guy living in horrible conditions that are getting worse and worse but he has to just take it. He wants to know where he'll be in older age. He's slowly aging before his time right now.

I believe this is about misery. Listen to the tone of the song- Slow, dreary, sluggish downtrodden. Sounds like a big moan and sigh.
The portrait in the backroom is a mirror that he tries not to look at but gives into to find that he is a shadow of his former self. He doesn't wanna be in the situation he is in. He takes care of his girlfriend as if he's carrying the huge responsibility of being her mother. It's dorian greyish because he is young but he is seeing himself as old in the mirror- all the stress has aged him in the inside at least. He's glad that his girlfriend is there in bed instead of her out drinking and coming in late drunk and starting trouble.
And "they" are people who might be ready to evict him out of the place they're staying because he was defrosting the fridge after all. Maybe he was packing up and he knows he should pay rent but he calls the landlord maybe. And he's just gonna have to take what's coming to him which is more stress, poorer living conditions?e They'll be homeless on the street? (slow graffiti)

This song just means how some people, like the guy in this song, can't sustain a relationship until the very end. Some people can't stay with someone else long enough to get married or when they ARE married, they don't have enough willpower to stay until the end (til DEATH do us part).
He want's her (his girlfriend) to meet him at his breaking point (midway), the point where he wants to stop loving her and get out of the relationship, and make him change his mind and continue the relationship to the very end so that he won't be a repeat offender of this situation and ultimately be lonely. Because people are meant to finish long distance races and if you don't, well then you're all alone while everyone else is passing you by. You're not a winner but a.... loser.
Beautiful song because there are too people like this and if only they were helped or encouraged along the way somehow, we'd have more long distance runners who finish.

Belle & Sebastian – Get Me Away from Here, I'm Dying Lyrics 15 years ago
The narrator of the song starts out saying he needs a great song because no one writes great ones anymore (think famous hits from the past) and basically says, "I know, I'll write one right here (this song) right now. Oh who am I kidding? I'm an independent artist, I don't stand a chance of making a great song."
Then, while on the bus, he is settling into a story that is run-of-the-mill that starts out with a normal guy just like anyone else who believes there's good and love in everything and finds out that not everything is great about life and the narrator anticipated it coming but kept reading anyway (as we all do in our lives- not everything is happiness in life like we like to believe when we're kids, there is tragedy somewhere in life) The narrator always cries at endings maybe the fear of dying or how people always cry at funerals (endings of our lives).
Then he picks himself up from his own internal revelation as if to say, "Oh I didn't mean to be a killjoy there, sorry." Doesn't wanna bring the listener down (irony!) so he apologizes for that. He's looking out the window on a rainy gloomy day (just like his mindset) thinking about past lovers and how they never know he's thinking about them unless he writes them a dear john (goodbye/break up) letter and just like in a story, he says "I could kill you with a sword but instead he'll hurt you with words and make you cry (hurt your feelings/break your heart)"
This song is basically all of B&S's songs in a nutshell: They're stories or moments that are a revelation of life and what it really is. Most of their songs are upbeat but gloomy because they reveal the real world truth. Sorry if that didn't make sense, I went deep there.
The narrator, just like anyone, needs a good song to lift their spirits just for a moment because the world isn't a sweet little fairytale like a children's book will make it out to be.
