I agree this song is amazing. I can't stop playing it at the moment. It just sounds so beautiful. Not too sure exactly what you mean by your interpretation. I think you mean that Richard has been able to come to terms with his regrets but his friend hasn't? I'm feeling a bit thick because I can't get the meaning of the "white lines" ! Anyway Richard Hawley is a genius... |

I think these lyrics could be Guy Garvey reflecting on well meant advice given to him by a parent worrying about him when he was younger. Parents worry about who you're spending time with, they worry about something going wrong if you get too drunk and they worry about you not fulfilling your academic potential (to name a few)! It's hard for them to accept that you're not like them or like their friend's son who seems to be doing everything right (like working hard at education etc). Maybe not just about Guy, could be anyone in the band or a band!! I get the feeling that although he just couldn't conform and "be like me", he respects the advice and feels the love that it stems from. I can't really get to grips with about the meaning behind the last few lines though. |

Actually this song is about his wife Kathleen (who is a "Jersey Girl"). There's a You Tube video of him performing it and talking beforehand. |

I know someone who's probably been relating to this song and I feel so, so sad for him. He needs to realise he's got such a lot going for him and if things aren't working out how he wants at the moment, not to lose faith because they will someday soon. He deserves to be happy... |

| Tom Waits – On the Nickel Lyrics

I interpret the references to the little boys, not as being "naughty boys" but boys who have been neglected by the people who should be caring for them. That's why they're hanging about "on the nickel", because they have no-one to look after them or care about them. No-one has taught them to comb their hair or say their prayers and no-one is bothered about where they are. As if the song isn't melancholy enough, my thoughts on the meaning make it even more sad (in a good way, if you know what I mean!).
