Don't Mix Lyrics

Don't mix your drinks
Don't mix with him
It will kill you one day
Good advice, sound advice

Why can't you be like him, like me?
Look what you could achieve
I'm coming cap-in-hand, begging you to listen
Something draws me in
And I just can't christen it, just can't christen it

Don't mix your drinks
Don't mix with him
It will kill you one day
Good advice, sound advice

You need to be like this, like me
I'm coming cap-in-hand, begging you to listen
Something draws me in
And I just can't christen it, just can't christen it

i get the feeling that the song is about someone who believes that the person they love is in the wrong relationship and playing dangerously with love and he's just begging the other person to listen but they won't. i don't know, i could be completely wrong, either i love this song, it's so delicate as though it could break, i love it, i love it, i love it

I think this song has a sour sarcastic tune to it. I think its one of those cases of an artist that grew up in a Christian home with powerfully spiritual strict parents, that he turned away from. I think he doesn't want to holy everything, but he's lost without a religion. He's showing how hypocritical christian can be by inforcing conversion. Its making him back away. I don't know; I could be way off.

To me these lyrics sum up the meaning: "I'm coming cap in hand begging you to listen." It's about someone that's having difficulties and turning to drink to forget his problems, when really he just needs people to be there for him.

I think it's pretty simple... He says he can't Christen it meaning he can't bless the relationship between some girl maybe he loves, or maybe who's just a friend, because he doesn't agree with it. That's why he's telling her not to mix with 'him'. And saying 'don't mix your drinks', maybe it's just when this girl get's drunk she goes with 'him'. 'Coming cap in hand' I think it means he's being sincere, cos it's polite to take a hat off when going into someones house (or used to be in days gone by).

I think these lyrics could be Guy Garvey reflecting on well meant advice given to him by a parent worrying about him when he was younger. Parents worry about who you're spending time with, they worry about something going wrong if you get too drunk and they worry about you not fulfilling your academic potential (to name a few)! It's hard for them to accept that you're not like them or like their friend's son who seems to be doing everything right (like working hard at education etc). Maybe not just about Guy, could be anyone in the band or a band!! I get the feeling that although he just couldn't conform and "be like me", he respects the advice and feels the love that it stems from. I can't really get to grips with about the meaning behind the last few lines though.
