Jersey Girl Lyrics

got no time for the corner boys, down in the street makin' all that noise,
don't want no whores on eighth avenue, cause tonight i'm gonna be with you.

cause tonight i'm gonna take that ride, across the river to the jersey side,
take my baby to the carnival, and i'll take you on all the rides, sing sha la
la la la la sha la la la.

down the shore everything's alright, you with your baby on a saturday night,
don't you know that all my dreams come true, when i'm walkin' down the street
with you, sing sha la la la la la sha la la la.

you know she thrills me with all her charms, when i'm wrapped up in my
baby's arms, my little angel gives me everything, i know someday that she'll
wear my ring.

so don't bother me cause i got no time, i'm on my way to see that girl of
mine, nothin' else matters in this whole wide world, when you're in love with
a jersey girl, sing sha la la la la la la.

and i call your name, i can't sleep at night, sha la la la la la la.

It's a shame that Tom Waits is not recognized for this song ( like some other songs he made ). I guess he just likes staying partially unknown.

Initially I thought Springsteen wrote it and Waits covered it, but then I discovered it was the other way round.

simple love song in my opinion. talking about just how good he feels when he's with her

References to marriage always depress me. I knew tons of couples in high school that were absolutely inseparable and seemed perfect for each other and were always on about getting married as soon as they were eighteen. Then when I met them later after graduation I'd ask, "How's (name of significant other)?" and I'd invariably get, "He/she moved away" or "It just didn't work out" and even just "Who?"

I love the song though. To paraphrase, "I Can't Believe It's Not Springsteen!" References to Jersey, "boys", streets and "corners", "angels", the "let's run away together" angle, it's even got the glockenspiel going on. It seems tailor-made for Bruce. The only thing missing is the laid-off blue collar workers.

I love this song simply because one I am a jersey girl, and it describes my bf( whos from PA) and I. Especially the part where he says "tonight I'm gonna take that ride, cross the river to the jersey side" He always comes over to see me on the weekends, and it just fit us perfectly. Despite his old hate for jersey, he found something good in it.

Not sure how anyone can find anything good in Jersey, but apparently he did. Love Tom Waits...great story teller. Didn't Springsteen cover this song (or write it)? Oops...just had to look up to see that it's a Waits' original:)

His cover is on that really famous live Springsteen album, Live/1975—85. I love how the crowd goes absolutely crazy when he sings it, and I like his added part about leaving that little brat of hers with her mother. But all in all, I prefer the original Tom Waits version.

Much better than the Springsteen version. You can almost smell the Hudson River air in this song and the clarity of the sunlight over the river............Sheer Brilliance

he's obviously never met a real jersey girl

Actually this song is about his wife Kathleen (who is a "Jersey Girl"). There's a You Tube video of him performing it and talking beforehand.

I now know where the "boss" stole his gruff voice, without most of the subtle intonations of Waits'. It's no surprise he "covered" Waits' elegy too, sucking it dry of most of the soul. I hear the "boss" recently came out in favor of gay marriage too. Guess his fan base is dwindling. You can so hear the voice of someone who doesn't care in Waits' voice, doesn't care that nobody's listening, and has us listening so spellbound at the same time.
