Frank Zappa – Dummy Up Lyrics 14 years ago
Great music
STUPID lyrics.

Frank: sometimes musical genius, sometimes grumpy m*therf*cker.

Seems FZ is being a p*ssy here since his high school experience was so lame - in turn he's going to write off ALL FORMS of education & higher education. Frank's satire can be so incredible, other times he shows what a douche he can be.

In this song FZ should take his advice and "shut up & play yer guitar"

Frank Zappa – Harry, You're A Beast Lyrics 14 years ago
OK - not sure where the thoughts above are from. Broken arm?

Anyway - seems, as with most of WOIIFTM, a criticism of American culture - specifically certain women who are the "typical 1950's stay at home woman" and/or the pampered princess. The lyrics are pretty clear in their criticism. The second half seems like the issues of man vs woman not understanding each other - and obviously the sexual play-out that happens, and you can hear the woman upset at the end because he didn't pull out and the man's appology. Kind of sad. Dark humor.

Frank Zappa – Brown Shoes Don't Make It Lyrics 14 years ago
The title of "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" was inspired by an event covered by Time Magazine reporter Hugh Sidey in 1966. The reporter correctly guessed that something was up when the fastidiously dressed President Lyndon B. Johnson made the fashion faux pas of wearing brown shoes with a gray suit. LBJ flew to Vietnam for an unannounced public relations visit later that day.

From allmusic:
"Brown Shoes Don't Make It" is considered Frank Zappa's first real masterpiece. This seven-and-a-half-minute song takes the form of a suite of short musical snippets of varying styles (from swing to contemporary classical) held together by the "story." It first appeared on the 1967 LP Absolutely Free. It is the best of the album's "underground oratorios." "The Duke of Prunes" and "Call Any Vegetable" do present better cohesion as a whole, but they don't go as far both lyric- and composition-wise. The story of this condensed two-hour musical (that's exactly how it feels) addresses social hypocrisy. The piece begins by a cynical praise of the lower obedient suburban lifestyle: "Be a loyal plastic robot/For a world that doesn't care," "Shine on your shoes and cut your hair," "Be a jerk and go to work." But those advocating this anti-freak lifestyle, so to speak, appear to be a lot more deviant than the people not following "the rules": "A world of secret hungers" hide in the offices of those telling everyone what to do. The song then follows one of these political rulers who fantasizes about a 13-year-old girl ("Smother my daughter in chocolate syrup/And strap her on again"). The song ends by mocking suburban politics, as the repressed pervert claims "Life is such a ball I run the world from City Hall." The studio version was striking back in 1967, going beyond any pop song recorded before, but lack of time and budget left it a bit sloppy: sections aren't edited perfectly, the band does not always land sharply on the right cues. "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" was performed live in 1969, in 1973, and a lot in 1979, resulting in a definitive recording of it on the 1981 LP Tinseltown Rebellion.

Frank Zappa – Who Are The Brain Police? Lyrics 14 years ago
All thoughts above are great - also could be a reflection about the fakeness of American society - something Frank often satires - especially in the first 3 MOTHERS albums.

WHO ARE THE BRAIN POLICE may be a reflection of the media bullcrap being fed to society from the 50's into the 60's (especially television - Frank comes back to this in I AM THE SLIME)- or how BIG BUSINESS runs things. We believe what they tell us/sell us...etc.

Frank points out things like: Chrome, plastic and labels. All important products of industry. Chrome for the automobile, labels for all material items and plastic which at that time was becoming a growing industry, making items cheaper to create but sometimes crummier quality.

What will happen to us if we don't have all these wonderful items big business have sold us???

Apparently this is the song that got THE MOTHERS their record contract. A PR man from MGM was brought in a club to see them live, heard this, thought they were like the other blues based teenage bands and signed them up - not knowing what Frank was about to unleash.
Apparently when they got in the studio later and started to record WHO ARE THE BRAIN POLICE this guy was like "oh crap there goes my job"!

Chester is probably Chester Thompson (drums) and Ruth is Ruth Underwood (Xylophone).

Arranged & performed by an older version of HEY JOE (forget who, but its on Rhino's NUGGETS series)

Obviously a bust on the hippie culture - most of it was bullcrap. What Frank "says" was mostly true about taht sub-culture. As history went on most of the hippies sold out. Frank's taited outlook proven true again.

Frank Zappa – Concentration Moon Lyrics 14 years ago
Most likely, as with most of WOIIFTM, a criticism of America in the 1960's - especially the hippie culture. The title may refer to JFK's commitment to the Space Program & NASA; " a man on the moon by the end of this decade"

At th time police were pissed off at dealing with hippies - many who were spoiled middle class kids rebelling against a society that provided them with much. Not that I'm advocating cops beating on kids or that the USA was perfect.

If you read the lyrics without thinking of the melody the protagonist may have been drafted: He's over the camp in the valley (boot camp), while his hippie buddies are all hanging out in the alley back at home getting stoned.

Then again "the valley" can stand for an area in LA suburbs - Frank is always talking about the sub-culture around that area (from FREAK OUT all the way to Moon singing "Valley Girl" in the 80's),

King Crimson – Easy Money Lyrics 15 years ago
johnther: you ARE the Tool. Don't you mean Tool sounds like King Crimson????? No Crimson, no Tool!

Parts of Easy Money (especially with the extra live verse) sound like Oscar Wildes trial.
Not sure if Sinfeild wrote them so it may just be his usually meaningles, half harted mish mash of lyrics.

Song does kick butt- especially live

The Rolling Stones – Rocks Off Lyrics 16 years ago
Ironic that a song about the depression of being on heroin has such a happy musical arrangement. The brass kicks ass.

ExiledOnMain from 10-05-2007 hit the nail on the head with his/her interpretation.

I think the 2nd verse may be an allusion to Tony Sanchez - one of Keith's gofer's and drug buddies - Sanchez worked for Keith and would often score for Anita & himself. Tony's girl at the time was a dancer.

Knowing this if you go back to 1st verse it may be Keith, in his selfish addiction, pissed that Tony has not shown up with the heroin.

3rd is about the injection, rush of it... the first line may be using cocaine. Coke & Herion sometimes would go hand in hand. Someone would be "zipping through the days at lightning speed", then take some heroin to slow down.

Thoughts?

The Rolling Stones – Salt Of The Earth Lyrics 16 years ago
To kfe2 - it is not Keith's first lead vocal. SOMETHING HAPPENED TO ME YESTERDAY from BETWEEN THE BUTTONS was.

Song CAN be a celebration of the common/working class people but the chorus shows kind of a contempt for them - as if, screw them. They'll never improve their lot in life.

The Rolling Stones – All The Way Down Lyrics 16 years ago
Have loved the UNDERCOVER Lp since I bought it as a teenager when it first came out. Really rocking.
As for ALL THE WAY DOWN - my thoughts, and these are just my thoughts and I'd like to hear feedback or further illumination from others, are the song is about the relationship of Mick & Marianne Faithful. They were pretty hot & heavy, glamorous and famous in the 60's to 1970, but by time the 80's came she was basically a homeless, drugged mess(quite a shame)trying to restart a "career" for the 3rd time. Who knows, maybe Mick heard about her in the news and was thinking about her and decided to write a song. Then again maybe not....

Key are lyrics like:

"I was twenty one naive Not cynical, I try to please Her wit, her speech, her repartee
Impressed me almost instantly"

I read when Mick first met her in the early, wild days of the Stones at a party (maybe 1964? please correct me) she was a married, elgant social climber and he was a pimple faced young singer. While trying to impress her he spilled his drink on her.

"She showed me sex a hundred ways,
How she pimped and how she paid
All the daughters, all the sons
All were welcome, all would come"

Not too sure her, they did have a son however there also may have been a miscarriage or 2, hence the daughers/sons part.
Pimped & paid may be her drug habit. Reading UP & DOWN WITH THE ROLLING STONES Tony Sanchez talks about Marianne whoring around for drugs.

"I was king, mr cool
Just a snotty little fool (like kids are now)
Dreamed of reaching greater heights
I raved about it every night (talked)"

Mick's ego.... snotty little fool could refer to either one of them. He wanted greater heights and she wanted herion.

"How the years rush on by,
Birthdays, kids and suicides
But still I play the fool and strut
Still you're a slut"

Time goes by...Now Mick talks about the 80's... suicides COULD be Brian Jones, also a line in IT'S ONLY ROCK & ROLL refers to suicide.
Obviously Mick likes to play the fool and strut, and I supposed Marianne, according to Mick, was still a slut. There are many documents about how she was with other men & women during their time together. I supposed if a woman "sells" herself for drugs she would be considered a slut. I dunno - ask Mick.

Other than the sexual reference of "ALL THE WAY DOWN" the title could be that she & her lifestyle (especially her herion addiction)brought him down when intead both of them had a chance to more elevated people. Still a Mick ego sided song. If it IS about he & MF then it would be cool to hear her side of it.

Once again, only my quick thoughts - some may be on target and some totally foolish.
enjoy
