Mom & Dad Lyrics
Mama! Mama!
Someone said they made some noise
The cops have shot some girls & boys
You'll sit home & drink all night
They looked too weird . . . it served them right
Mama! Mama!
Someone said they made some noise
The cops have shot some girls & boys
You'll sit home & drink all night
They looked too weird . . . it served them right
Ever take a minute just to show a real emotion
In between the moisture cream & velvet facial lotion?
Ever tell your kids you're glad that they can think?
Ever say you loved 'em? Ever let 'em watch you drink?
Ever wonder why your daughter looked so sad?
It's such a drag to have to love a plastic Mom & Dad
Mama! Mama!
Your child was killed in the park today
Shot by the cops as she quietly lay
By the side of the creeps she knew . . .
They killed her too.
Someone said they made some noise
The cops have shot some girls & boys
You'll sit home & drink all night
They looked too weird . . . it served them right

The song was actually written and recorded two or three years BEFORE Kent State. Very prescient, that FZ.
This is probably FZ's most serious, unironic, lyric. It's somber, grave, and Zappa isn't trying to make anything funny about it.
I borrowed We're Only In It For The Money from a friend in 1968. After a few plays, this was the first Zappa song I came to like and so my Zappa album collection grew from here.
Its an interesting story, I think, about some parents hearing the story of some police killing some protestors (presumably Kent State, though its never specified) and the parents basically saying "its a shame that they forced the Police to ac t like that, but they DID have waht was coming to them." and then they learn that their own daughter was killed there as well. Tragic story.
It also talks about Zappa's distaste for uninvolved parents and families
Can't be Kent state because that happened in 1970 - the song was recorded 1967/68

Very moving song. It wasn't about Kent State, but keep in mind there were many other shootings of people who've committed a minor crime in the 60's. If you got caught with drugs, and tried to run, you could have gotten shot. It didn't happen all the time, but there was more than a few cases of it.
Kent State just stood out at the time because it was the killing of protesters in a college, they weren't really doing anything wrong.
It was written Three years before Kent State................What a prediction!
